If you're going to do a $20 buyin, 5¢/10¢ is way more playable, IMO.
Agreed. I issued a barrel of nickels, a barrel of quarters, and 14x $1s for $20 starting buy-ins (200bb). Deep stack poker, baby! Definitely not a short-stack all-in shove-fest.

Six players, ended up with six racks in play (roughly 2 of each, heavy on the $1s) for over $280 in play (~ $47 per player) in a short four hour session. Some were in for three buy-ins, most for just one or two.

Great time, some really good poker, and nobody got hurt. Between friends, it's not about the money.

I have played a ton of $20 dollar buy in 25/50 cent poker with locals. While I agree it is not optimal it can still be a damn good time. There are definitely more rebuys. When I play this I feel a sense of invincibility, no such thing as scared money at these stakes. This type of poker is how I cut my teeth some 30 plus years ago. It beats a $20 tournament by a long shot in my opinion.

This. I am aware it is technically short stacked, but everyone has a blast and no complaints. We actually tried a 100BB tourney and they were disappointed that there weren't more rebuys. I'm not sure if just the excitement of people busting is what it is, but it works and keeps them coming back.

Would it be 14 * $1s?

20 * $.25 = $5
20 * $.05 = $1
16 * $1 = $16

5 + 1 + 16 = $22

5 + 1 + 14 = $20

I love this idea, but the morons I play with will literally call anything preflop for less than 3 dollars, at the same time they don't want to play real buy-ins for hundreds of dollars. I hate short stacked games...

same boat, they don't want to really gamble so they just call everything low then get confused/angry when i raise to $12 pre-flop

How long would you typically expect $20 to go in a .05/.05 game? 400BB should last plenty of hours, right? Trying to move my tourney guys over to cash but a) they're tight and don't want to play more than £20 and, b) they're worried about going broke early and then sitting out for the rest of the night because they're too cheap to buy in for more than £20

I think a better approach is to start with £10 buy-ins (worth 200BB at .05/.05). Even if stacked, they still have another £10 in their budget to reload, and would typically last longer overall than if they bought £20 up front. Could even go with initial £5 buy-ins (100BB), which would allow for three additional re-buys.

But exactly how long would 100BB, 200BB, or 400BB last? Almost impossible to tell, without knowing anything about how they play. Your best estimate may be derived from their tournament play history..... based on how long players last before busting relative to the size of their starting stacks in BB. A bit different due to escalating blinds, but it should give you a starting point.

...to add onto what BG said...

How long their initial buy-in will last will also vary depending on their relative strengths. If players are relatively equal, the same chips tend to just be moved around the table, and you might see 1-2 rebuys when 100 BB deep. Bigger moves on "cooler" hands, but coolers are somewhat uncommon in NLHE.

This is my exact dilemma lol and why we play 20 dollar 0.25/0.50

Luckily there aren't too many big bets made and since they are mainly beginners it's easy to know when to get out of the way. Most don't bet more than the pot right now. I have started to get a couple to start buying in with 30 and they have mentioned that it plays better. So fingers crossed we can get to the 50 mark soon
