shipping US to canada. duties/tax etc?? (1 Viewer)

I once scoured the CBSA site and thought under "gambling supplies" or something similar I had found a category that the chips could maybe fall under if we fought it, where the amount was very low compared to other categories of product I'd gotten before.

Due to NAFTA, we only pay "duty" on goods that are not produced in the USA or Mexico. Given all chips from CPC, Paulsons etc. everything except China Clays is produced in North America, we should not pay duty on those items. We should be paying GST and PST as well as brokerage fees, but technically not duty.

Also , if you have a postal box in the USA, if your purchases are over your daily limit or the limit of the trip, you will pay GST and PST as well. You will save the brokerage fee, because you are technically the broker, but no duty if you can prove the goods are produced in the USA.

I would change that to *may* have to pay GST and PST. I have never had to pay GST or PST on chip/poker purchases. Most of the time I don't think they can be bothered to charge it. The only time I had to pay tax is when I brought wheels over that were $400.

Thanks,
Grant

hmm, i’m gonna pull the trigger lol. what’s the worst that can happen? worst case, if done right, were prob talking a hundred bucks on a set right? wife already thinks i’m nuts for getting back into this when there’s “really nice chips at walmart for 30 bucks” haha..will post the damage

I understand that this varies but what's everyone's experience with how long it takes for the customs clearance when ordering CPC's and sent directly to a Canadian address through USPS?

Hi.

I've bought from CPC and most other US dealers here. Shipping is 2 weeks total on average. Give or take 2 days. Sometimes when the package gets to customs, it gets released same morning, other times it's stuck there 2 days. Totally random from one time to another.

Let me guess, you have a game planned and need your chips now? I know that feeling bud.

Yup you guessed it. That's what I figured. Had I known it would take 2 weeks on average, I would have made arrangements to ship/pickup in the US like I normally do. Anyway lesson learned for next time.
So with Canada Post, how do we pay for the taxes and fees owed? I checked online and there is no option to pay for these beforehand using a credit card. I doubt our postal worker is equipped to take payments.

Depends on how well the shipment is packaged and who the seller is. In terms of packaging: Is it a nice sturdy normal box shape with legible information? If so, the less likely it will need to be processed by hand. Has the shipping label been prepared by hand or via shipping software? The latter will speed up the customs process significantly as the contents are submitted electronically making the xRay process faster or unnecessary. Declared value/ contents, country of origin, known red flag cases, all play a part in determining how intrusive customs will be towards the shipment. Manifests also have to be prepped by the post office of origin, regardless of customs, so that the post office in the receiving country can be paid for delivering these shipments.

Canada Post Delivery Agents can take cash (exact amounts only... they don't carry change) or credit cards (Amex/MC/Visa only).

In my two experiences with CPC custom chip shipments to Canada, both took just a week to be delivered to my door.

Edit: I forgot to mention there are only three entry points into Canada (Vancouver, Toronto & Montreal) for incoming international shipments. If you live close to these cities (like I do) then lucky you, otherwise you have to wait for your shipment to go through one of these entry points before it's forwarded to your location in Canada.

Thanks @LinkyBabe for the feedback. It's directly from CPC so I imagine the packaging and labeling is good.
I ended up calling Canada Post directly and inquired about my shipment with a value of roughly $1k CAD to ask about how to pay for the taxes and fees. The agent says that they may have not charged me with anything since there is no outstanding invoice attached and it has already cleared customs. Hopefully this is the case but will know when the package gets here. You are pretty dead-on with the 1 week timeframe, I'm in Vancouver.
