^ That about says it...

I have never owned a flask. I want to. Most likely will be sipping some decent scotch or cognac.

Maybe the $6 amazon special will do, but sorta looking for something a little "classier" or high quality? Or maybe there's not much difference between $6 and $120. That's why I need help :)

I've done some online research, but I figure the qualities that make a good chipper might make a good flask critic, and I know a few of you out there have some *looking at you Official PCF Whisk(e)y Thread*

Stainless steel vs pewter? Both rust resistant? (as I understand modern pewter flasks won't have the lead risk)

Leather bound or no? (I like the idea of soft leather to hold, but have read that can permanently stain easily)

I'm thinking 6oz.

Thanks (y)

Higher quality is better for a host of reasons, including that you get what you pay for.

Pewter? No. Lead risk is still there, even for modern flasks. Also, can cause off flavors.

Leather-bound? No, for the reason you stated, plus you can't wash it, and it defeats one of the nice things about a discrete flask--it slips easily into a pocket.

But, honestly, if you want to do it right, do what I did: get Titanium. It's inert, so no off flavors, it's lightweight, it's got a matte finish so it's discrete. And it's classy as hell.

Snow Peak--a Japanese brand. Not cheap, but awesome. Only niggle I have with it is that the cap is not captive, so you have to be careful not to lose it. Don't get the round one, even though it's cool looking--you can't put it down with the cap off.

I keep mine fully charged with Oban, Talisker or Lagavulin.

I have a few, collected over many years -- including one with a black leather covering that has never stained and is no problem to keep clean -- but I find them to be a complete waste of time unless you can find one that holds at least 375 ml. ymmv, of course.

I agree. There doesn't seem to be a sweet spot between small enough to comfortably carry and big enough to hold a few drinks.

Im in the camp of cheeper is better. Basically, anytime a flask is required, its usually because I'm trying to bring alcohol to a place where its not typically allowed, and Im trying to keep it subtle. I have owned nice flasks, and one word of caution is don't put it in your back pocket and sit on it, as you can crush it and lose most of the carry space.

If you want to go high end, Id go for the diamond Rihanna model.

Yep - if it gets confiscated, losing a cheaper model is a lot better than a leather-wrapped or exotic metal version.

That is why god invented apple juice in 8 - 12 oz. plastic bottles.

Great advice all. After much consideration of all the pros and cons, I've decided to go with the diamond studded Rihanna model (y)
Thanks

If you see that bitch, you know what to tell her.

Yeah. Well this all started when the wifey and I made a last minute decision to get out to a movie last weekend and I was scrambling to find something to pack along some woodford reserve to mix with my coke...and nachos...and hotdog...and popcorn....

I went with the small Fuji water bottle. Worked fine, but my preeminent need for a more permanent solution became apparent.

The old Wizzinator or fake Colostomy Bag are also good options when your facing stricter security than a movie theatre.

Stainless Steel works best. Go for an 8 oz version, or 12 oz if it is to be slipped into a jacket pocket. A slight concavity is good for ergonomic reasons. Do NOT leave your spirits in there for a long period of time. Rinse thoroughly after use. Enjoy.

P.S. You should bring Vodka to your next film, and get a slushy instead.
