The Current State of Chipping (2 Viewers)

My outside view of the current state of chipping

Fewer new members dive into the deep end (think $3, $4+ a chip) because of how far the low end has come. You can get pretty decent chips, way better than dice chips, with denominations, at ten to fifty cents, and this includes customization. Fewer people are willing to pay for $3 for “well loved” old, icky clay chips when they can get new for far less. Also, if younger folk as a cohort aren’t buying as much alcohol, they’re definitely not buying expensive poker chips.

More of the old guard found chipping retirement and/or are pairing down their collections. They had the means and propensity, but barring a few outliers that are fine with adding to 20k+ chip collections, most top out around 5-10k. The people who stay on PCF usually a) like to admire new chips without buying them, b) like the meetups and camaraderie here, and/or c) like to stir the pot and read the drama.

In short, higher prices, lower demand. Shifting tastes and spending habits of younger generations. Most long-time members accumulated enough.

That said, a NAGB will always lure some of the old guard back for more. In fact, the NAGB (picture) threads are an interesting microcosm of the current state of chipping. Mostly old guards posting their pictures and commending one another, a sprinkle of new blood, and drama.

Saturn won't be replaced by any dog. I caught him last night, showing his dominance over such inferior creatures...

Can words or theme songs from, say, the early forties be construed as a form of violence?
Pre coitus with the farting dog.

As a younger folk, in this economy most of my friends think I'm crazy spending 250€ for a set of 300 ceramics, and even I don't know where my boundaries are. I won't sell an organ to buy Paulsons that no one around me will appreciate to their worth. I think very few people in my generation are nerdy enough to be interested in playing cards and poker chips, we havnt grown up with TV Poker during the boom and traditional card games are being replaced by modern board games so there isnt really any transmission

But admiring chips I can't afford is top tier past-time

I think for newer hobbyists/potential chippers, @detroitdad ’s post represents another barrier to jumping into high end chips too. The value proposition at 10-50 cents a chip is just so, so good. You have to really love chips to spend 6-10x+ that amount.

I hate having chips with this kind of value just sitting on the shelf.

New to collecting chips

First rack I bought...
Wife: oh, very cool!

Third rack...
Wife: ....you got more?

It was at this point I stopped disclosing chip purchases.

This was 4 racks ago.

How many more can I buy before she finds my stash?

This is a fun sweat. 😅
