Soo, I think to myself… man we need a new thread on PCF… a good topic!

I have seen a bunch of crap lately about “investment”… those that say “I’m not investing” I might agree not investing, but if you paid $35 a chip (IG sec $1ks) and say had 350 of them… I think unless you’re a multi millionaire, that you definitely keep an eye on the market! I mean I have no intentions of selling, but at 46 sets and over a quarter million in chips… I guess yeah, it’s an investment… for me anyways. BUT I don’t own chips I won’t play!

Thinking back in the hobby and when I had that “chipping itch” bad! I never went in debt but I would make deals with people like 3 pay checks before I had them… until the day that “one” dream set became available and I had to have and no way to pay!

I will share my story in another post, but what set was the one where you made terrible decisions and went in debt over poker chips? If you’re rich or one of those “I only buy chips with poker winnings” this thread ain’t for you. But the die hards… think back, there was a time you were more obsessed with chips than breathing!

Which chips did you break out the ole credit card for? No I don’t mean “dude I put everything on my card for points and then pay it off every month” I mean, outside my means and don’t care! Gotta have em! I’m ready for a story.

Not happened to me yet. I'm in debt for other reasons. It's not a fun hill to climb out of and it just seems to be digging a deeper hole.

My momma always said to never charge anything to a credit card/buy anything that you don't have the money on hand for. I've kept that up for over 6 years here and it will continue to remain true.

Closest I ever got though was the original Tiger Palace release. Borrowed some money from my personal emergency fund to pay for them but paid it back later.

The debit card is for money I have now. The credit card is for money I hope to have by the end of next month when the statement's due.
I very rarely don't have the money, pay it all off and get those reward points. This year I paid for all my food on my Hilton Head trip with those.

I did. I bought my In Plays on a credit card. Paid it in two months. Glad I did. But I don’t recommend going into debt ever.

These 46 sets need not be an investment you can’t monetize… Like real estate where the costs aren’t sunk….

I want to rent chips. T5 or T25 tournament/cash chips have value to me, even if for a month or two.

I know it’s a losing move when it comes to dollars but winning in terms of time to compile, build, list and sell. Especially if you build something you end up not liking (which I’ve done and maybe doing again as we speak with Cpc HHR).

Can I get on subscription model like OG Netflix? Set monthly fee - I check out 2 sets and return in a month or two and swap out as I see fit.

Good. Show me what you’ve got!!! Haha. The fact that Ben and I are both NJ based makes this actually more realistic. Packing and shipping is so expensive in time and money that it would likely kill the viability. But when you’re a few GSP (garden state parkway) exits away it’s not entirely crazy.

It's actually pretty easy.

Buy chipsets. Send them off for free (or something stupid cheap that you could easily buy back at any time) with fror. Do like 1-2 a year for a couple years. You're building up your stable.

Eventually, you get to a point where you look at your 4-5 sets in the house, and decide you don't need one. Reach out to your frors asking who wants it, and trade it for your other one back.

Eventually you build a large stable of chipsets throughout membership and essentially create your own free to use network of various chipsets to rotate in and out.

Didn't put much thought into it, but I've definitely considered doing something like this. I may have even mentioned it to a couple PCF friends. Acquiring tons of sets and offering to rent sets out to people who want to play with nice sets. Of course the cost of doing this is very high cause your deposit would essentially be the cost of the chips (market price). This would be returned to you upon return of the chips (minus the rental fee and charges for damaged/lost chips). The only initial problem I saw with this was that your target audience would probably just buy the chips outright and have no need to rent sets.

When I first got into chipping Paulson Pharaoh’s were readily available for $1/chip. Every 2 weeks when I got paid I’d order 100 more. That went on for several months until my set was playable. Growing up poor and seeing my parents struggle with credit card debt taught me to never fall into that trap.
