Hi all,

I have the opportunity to buy this Bud Jones “Golden Sands Casino” cash set (400 chips: 1/5/25/100).
I’m considering picking them up for home games, but I’m curious:

  • What would you estimate the value of a set like this? Or what would you pay for this as a maximum?
  • Is there any collector interest in these, or mainly just play value?
  • Anything specific I should check before buying?
Appreciate your thoughts!

Agreed. First thought was 1.50 a chip. Not a great breakdown either, except maybe as a stt set. Nice looking chips though.

While these chips aren't as prone to chipping or fleabites as clays are, they can crack from the edge all the way to the decal instead. So I'd make sure there are no cracked chips and if they need to be shipped, adequate padding should be used.

So you have a "Golden" opportunity! If you can get them for around $1 - $1.50 per chip thats ok. Less is even better.

Price point on these doesn’t really change. So you’re not going to lose a bunch of money or make a bunch of money years later.

But, the breakdown of chips is unplayable for cash poker (maybe you’re using it for something else like board games).

I think this set would be better for utilization (same seller), but of course is more money.

Sounds like solid advice. Thanks a lot for taking the effort guys. Think finding extra 1’s and 5’s to expand will prove to be a pain in the ass?

I haven't seen em a ton, and I adore bud jones sets. If these fall thru, look for a Bud Jones S2 set. They perform a bit better without the suction issues like a V7. But both are lovely sets.

Agreed S2>V7. S2s don't have the denom in the mold (so you can change the value of the chips, say you want to make a 25¢ chip) and S2s don't have the suction effect. You can add a rack of S2s or R6s if you need fracs.

Agreed breakdown sucks. Depending on your stakes and typical player field size (assuming you have to buy full racks), 200x$1, 300-400x$5, 100x$25, 100x$100.

Agreed at about $1 chip, maybe a little more for higher denoms. You absolutely need to check for cracks.

Agreed little to no collector value as individual chips/sample sets.

Agreed chips value shouldn't drop significantly over time.

Also, these chips should be easy to relabel, if you want them to make them your own.

Like @Josh Kifer, you either love or hate Bud Jones. I recommend handling them first if possible, find out what camp you're in.

I have chiplab’s currently (bud ASM/THC/CPC mix arriving tomorrow) and like those a lot. Also we mainly play 0.25/0.50

Speaking of motivating others to try the S2 bs V7…..let’s start these discussions after I find a couple racks of S2’s.

For an inexpensive plastic chip they are actually quite hard to find

Personally, I'm a fan of the BJ v7. The "suction" effect doesn't bother me, but YMMV. I think the chip has a remarkably "soft" feel for a plastic chip.

I've paid close to $2.50/chip for my BJ v7 set. However...
  • This breakdown is not stellar, and you still need fracs for your .25/.50 game
  • I have no connection to (nor ever heard of) the Golden Sands casino
  • The label is basic
Those points would dramatically decrease it's value in my eyes, and I wouldn't even offer $1/chip.

I was speaking with another member and apparently people have had success applying an ultra thin label to V7 chip eliminating the suction effect. If anybody has more insight I would be curious. Sorry to thread jack a bit
