You may either buy 1) assorted singles/one and a half barrels of undesirable chips, 2) a "set" with a weird ass breakdown or 3) a grail set for a bazillion dollars.

Is 140 $5s in a 900+ chip set a weird breakdown? Asking for a friend.
 
Wait for Meetup/WSOP season to be in full swing or a Chip Room sale, lots of people needing cash and nice sets become available for decent prices. @BarrieJ3 sold me this set a couple years ago before his meetup for a deal! The key is to have the cash available when the deal comes along. Having to selling some racks and a set before being able to buy means someone else will snatch up the deal!

Truth, but since the title is “current state of chipping”, I’d add the caveat that this type of stuff doesn’t actually happen much anymore.

I used to do this a ton, and I do/would 100% do it again with you or some other folks privately, but I would never do this publicly again.

The Tiger Sell Off was amazing. Everyone dumped so many chips I was able to put together some great sets. Ballys, RPC Fakeshores…

Not complaining. Its just the equivalent if the real estate market was only five plus million dollar mansions, 2000 sqft houses with 8 bathrooms and seven and a half foot ceilings, and a carport only.

This is specific to Paulsons. The availability of China clay and custom hybrid/ceramic has never been more prolific. CPC being down for the move means no custom sets are being posted and custom CPC selloffs are non existent, which does feed into the "bare market" feeling.

However, the "chipping market" now includes unlimited customizations that extend far beyond the chips themselves. We have unfettered access to custom toppers, competitive plastic cards at rock bottom prices, 3d printed accessories out the ass, and now things like *checks notes* custom bank bags??

Lower end Paulsons may have fallen off, but all in all it's not a bad time to be in the "custom" part of the market.

Also, the current state of chipping is that it sucks. There y'all go. Go buy some more fcking bank bags five at a time for your one-table game.
