New here, just looking for some advice and recommendations.
I am looking to purchase a small amount of chips with the main purpose of just having to have around to shuffle.
Something with a cool decoration and on the lighter side. Like around 11g.

I would recommend getting a sample set of ceramic poker chips. Nash slowplay ceramics are only 20 dollars on amazon and they will give you 1 of each color.
Ceramics will last the longest. You can't get any dents or scratches on those chips unless you really tried.

If you want premium poker chips, I would look for someone selling a small amount THC, RHC, ASM, or CPC. These chips will giving you real clay feal in the hand. Over time they will get damaged, but that is just the reality of the nicer poker chips. These will be more expensive, but It just depends on what aesthetics and feel you want to go for. I personally carry around HHR molded ASM poker chips with me.

Browse the classifieds and see what catches your eye.

Shuffle stack = 10 chips
Barrel = 20 chips

High end mint condition chips may be $10/chip, but there’s plenty listed around $1/chip, plus shipping.

read in some beginner’s guides here about the different types of chips if you’re not up to speed on that yet. Lots of different types and they all have different attributes

Apache has Dunes and Majestic samples of 10x chips. China Clays have their detractors but I think they are great for shuffling and fit the weight you suggested. Most Paulsons will be slightly lighter.

There are plenty of “singles” sellers on the forum if your looking for casino Paulsons. @JWC @djmarc
And @greenchip come to mind for that.

CPC would need some breaking in IMO, and I don’t believe they are selling any samples at the moment.

@justincarothers sells samples for various “Tina” ceramics here.

10 chips is not enough to shuffle, imo. Probably wanna buy 20.

11g is on the lighter side?

The only clay chips 11g and up would be IHC, high end sharp leaded THC, and leaded TRKs.

8.5-9.5g/chip would be much more common
Heavy for clay but a lot of ABS chips are in the 13.5g range or even above. Assume OP isn't super familiar w poker chips so that seems like a natural frame of reference.

True, but nobody really discusses plastic slugged chips here.
True, just saying that for an outsider who doesn't know a ton abt chips the 13.5gs are a normal frame of reference. Think it's easy to get a little into the hobby without realizing how much you've yet to learn.

Consider the Olympus or Milano- I picked some up from the poker shop.com. They’re similar to each other- main difference is the Olympus has fairly sharp edges and Milano is a bit rounded so takes less time to break in.

Yeah...those Olympus chips are nice!! Good recommendation to someone new like this.

My first shuffle chips, I just got the newest looking dollar chips from my local casino.
Positives, they are paulsons and they can be 'sold' back to them whenever youre done

If you’re buying 20(recommended) get Paulsons. Don’t waste your time looking around, get the best. A nice barrel for shuffling and they have some grip to them which will aid you while learning.

I have a barrel of Tiki Kings on my desk at work.

I just use some random $5 chips that somehow make it back from Vegas and Reno

Hey Soup,

Sorry if I'm late to the party, but I thought I'd chime in since I've spent the past two years searching for the perfect shuffle stack.

While much of this comes down to personal preference, I would say that only applies after a certain point. As in, you're definitely going to want to get Paulson's, but what kind of Paulson's can be up for debate. I'd recommend not even wasting time or energy on any of that Chinese crap, as it'll just draw out the process of finding something that you'll really enjoy shuffling.

Once you're looking at Paulson's, then it gets into THC vs RHC, leaded vs non-leaded, 39mm vs 43mm, but overall I'd say a great safe bet would be the inlay Paris $1's. You can get a barrel cheap enough and they will be newer THC's, once you break them in a little, I think for the money this is probably the best bet.

If you were looking to go a bit beyond, this is where you start to enter the land of lead and butter. In this category, I'd recommend something like Lakeside Inn or Harrah's. Because of their age, many of them have been worn to perfection and shuffle like butter. Also, the added weight from the lead gives them a satisfying punch.

Now, if you really wanted to reach for the top, the best shuffle stack I have found has to be the gargantuan, heavy-leaded, 43mm Garden City $500's. Not only are they worn enough to be smooth like butter, but they shuffle like hockey pucks. They are so large and heavy that you can feel and hear each one stack onto the other in a numbingly blissful symphony of chipping beauty.

A shuffle stack can be a tricky thing, and even two barrels from the same casino can age and wear at different speeds so they won't all be the same. But as long as you stick with Paulson's, you can't really go too far wrong. Everyone will say it's a matter of preference, like choosing a flavor of ice-cream. But just remember, you want to be choosing from a curated selection at Baskin Robbin's, not scavenging their dumpster for China Clays.

I collect barrels/half barrels for shuffle stacks. Paulsons have different molds with some having oversized inlays. I also like the vintage clay molds. H mold is currently my favorite followed by T mold. If you see some barrels for sale, pick em up and feel them out. I have ceramics in my collection but find that they’re generally too slick to enjoy shuffling them. This is an older pic, but it’s some of my collection.

If it’s best shuffle you want it’s well worn casino used leaded paulsons. Solid white to get best shuffle per dollar. Atlantic Maritime $1s for instance.

I never got a reply to any of my PM's regarding the spot samples you asked to buy?
