Poker Night With Pat! (old folks home) (1 Viewer)

Pat, where (city) is this game in MI ?

And I ain't from here, so don't go pointing at your hand to describe the location.

My girlfriend is from Saginaw, and she does that all the damn time....
We are down in Livonia. About 20 minutes from bills and the airport. About 20 mins from downtown.

2 things:

A. These folks are damn lucky to have you. I like this a lot

B. You are damn lucky I am not a regular, because your chips would be at risk of my "souvenir syndrome."
Are you saying you want a sample pack of the Lupton Garage's or you would just low-key be stealing my chips every time you play. lol. I would let you take chips home if you filled a seat.

Broke out the Golden Gate set this week. Not very lucky for me though. Burnt through a buy-in real quick!

Brought my daughter to shake the game up. She just low-key takes down the first two pots and then splits the third.

She gave it all back minus $1.

We had to switch the game from Friday to Thursday. (Damn, school chaperone detail for Dad)

Sue called me early on Thursday to say that Ed wasn’t feeling the best and would not be playing.

I already got the green light to be gone for the night so I brought a movie over to Sue’s place to watch. We have been trying to figure out a time to watch it and this worked out perfect!

Of course the movie is Rounders…and she loved it.

Also found a good pic of Sue when she was a young lass. All you guys that have been dm’ing me about it, here ya go.

IMG_5559.webp

Broke out the Card Palace chips and brought the brats. Blues are nickels, yellow quarters and the dark blue $1’s are a dollar
IMG_5649.webp

They added 2 vending machines to the tiny room. Now we have a nice glow of lights and the sound of motors. Ed and Sue didn’t care about them though. I bought a snickers.
IMG_5648.webp

The boy learned some lessons this week.
IMG_5647.webp

IMG_5643.webp

Ed with the Royal and Sue with the highest Spade. This was Chicago, deuces wild.
IMG_5641.webp
IMG_5639.webp

The girl played for an hour or so and cashed out with $17 I think. Even brought her lil dolly card protector.
IMG_5631.webp
IMG_5629.webp

We didn’t play on last week on thanksgiving but I did make the mistake of showing the boy some clips from Rounders.

We played heads up and he has the worst KGB accent I’ve ever heard. Wow. I went on mega tilt because of it.

IMG_5692.webp
IMG_5691.webp

This week I just HAD to felt these FLV’s. .5/.25/$1 $10 buy-in. I was worried Ed would cut his fingers because of the extreme sharpness on these.
IMG_5722.webp

We were back on track this week and Ed’s grandson was over to fix his laptop. We all goated him into playing. I gave him $4 off my stack because Ed refused.

Kid was very excited to be playing and has been looking for a game to get into and learn. He ended up re-loading for $6 and ended up with $10. I didn’t request my money back even though he said he wanted to reimburse me. I woulda took my stake but didn’t have change for a $10 lol.
IMG_5738.webp

My daughter is officially a crusher. Walked with $22 this week. She played the entire game and gave everyone a chance to win it back. Played real snug and forced action when she had the goods. I will be bringing a doll card protector next week.
IMG_5737.webp
IMG_5736.webp

I cracked Jadin’s pocket aces in a hand of Pineapple.
IMG_5727.webp

Feeling inspired by this post. I mentioned it to a friend and he also liked the idea.

How did you get started doing this?
Sorry just saw this.

My mother in-law was the recreation director for the home. I was looking for a volunteer opportunity and asked if I could do poker.

Sure enough there was a big response.

We had a great game last week. Ed’s grandson brought his cousin, who will be back and bringing his wife! A new member came to scope out the game and will be back to play. Oh and she’s 103 years young. NBD.
IMG_5767.webp

IMG_5768.webp

I didn’t have time to take pics. I should have cuz there was some nice pots.

Ed got a little salty and said “all these extra players are taking money outta here.” Sue told him it’s worth it to have some actual players. Hopefully he’s feeling better next week.

On a sad note we lost a great friend on Thanksgiving. Sweet Dee was struggling with back pain that turned out to be the big C.

She was the best and helped out at the store in the home. She hadn’t played with us for a while but I got to see her a few times recently.

R.I.P. Sweet Dee. We’ll miss you. Also miss you too Carol. (gal on my right) We mention your name every time we play. Always when we play Chicago.

I found an old poker vlog I made with Sweet Dee!

R.I.P. Sweet Dee.

I always love when you post the game reports here. This is such a fantastic thing you do for these folks. I'm certain it's the highlight of their week as well.

I'm also happy to see Mr. Crankypants has backed off and the kiddos are regular attendees. I'm sure it's great for them to see the perspectives of previous generations. I never really had my grandparents around when I was younger, so I missed out on that a bit for myself.

That's a drag to miss out on the Grandparents. Hopefully you get that status one day and be the grandpa you always wanted. Idk what that really looks like tbh! What is the perfect Grandpa? haha

I think I wanna end up the senile, weirdo grandpa. You know the the type that makes you dig around in his pockets looking for Werther's Originals.

I grew up with really old Grandparents right across the road in a town with a bunch of old timer, WW2 and Korea Vets. I used to cut one dudes grass, got my hair cut at a mans barber shop in Rose City and hung out with the old boys there and at the Lupton Garage. I learned first hand that there is something to be learned from being around the old boys.

And I think it's important for the kids to see the relationships that can be made if your put in the right opportunity.

As far as Ed and his mood swings I'm not sure...

He is now cool with my kids and was super stoked that the younger grand-kid came a few weeks ago. But last week when he was complaining about the players not being from the home and the money leaving, I was thinking like he was thinking out loud. Idk. We will see this week. I'd rather have all adults and not have to use my kids as shills to keep the game proper.

Another fun week in the books! A new resident, Nancy, came to join the game. What a treat and talk about a nice lady.

She definitely is no Sue Check and needed a ton of help the first few rounds. She knew hand rankings and that was it.

As I’m explaining the bare basics just to get her up to speed, Ed is whispering the most confusing tips to her.

“If the deuce is loose raise away.”

“When the red Jacks one eye is on ya it’s gonna be a long night.”

Slow and annoying but she caught on after a while. We played an entire round of Chicago deuces wild for Nancy until Ed decided to play 7 Stud low hole and all like it wild. Great Ed. The hardest game to learn.

It looks like I got the new guys Jaden and Patrick hooked pretty well. Both guys are really sharp and Patrick’s sense of humor is spot on with mine. We riff off each other a lot while making fun of Ed and Jaden. Especially Jadens haircut.

The kid was slinging round poker terms like an auto-role of some poker YouTube channel.

I raised a quarter early and said “welp I guess that didn’t get rid of anyone.”

“We’re real sticky.” Says the kid.

Clearly he’s been doing some research. Proud of him and sent him my pdf full of poker tips. Hopefully this leads to these guys playing an actual game at my place down the road.

Oh and Ed’s family has a place on Island Lake in Rose City/Mio Michigan. That is where I went to Middle school and it’s about 5 miles from my hometown Lupton.

They kept asking questions so I basically told them the entire history of Ogemaw County and how its namesake was a Ojibawa chief that sold the NE portion of Michigan in the Saginaw Treaty signing of 1819 . I love history and was happy to share.
IMG_5797.webp

One year anniversary of me snagging the Heritage Inn set. Love the fracs and color set-up on these chips. Pretty sure a poker player order the line-up because they were only used on a one table game in the hotel.

I left up a buy-in + at $26. I didn’t have to play every single hand and folded when I had total junk.
IMG_5799.webp

New lady left up $4. She low-key had rolled up Jacks, got dealt a natural, pat full boat in 5 card double draw deuces wild. Ok card player she is! But she got purrrty lucky if I do say so myself.
IMG_5800.webp

Another bummer…

We lost a former player and notorious short-buy-in-guy Tom Rossi. He always walked by when the game started, scoped the room and then came in short at $6 or $7. He either finished well up or busted out and left.

He was super social and an ambassador for the community he lived in. He cared for his wife all day everyday until he couldn’t anymore. He really loved her and talked about her a lot.
IMG_0484.webp

Tom also was a combat Marine that served in Vietnam. I can’t remember his MOS but I think Infantry.

After his service he was a proud member of the VFW in Taylor, MI. He rose to post commander at one point and was a gold card carrying member.

VFW memebers carry cards that prove membership. If you donate $400 bucks you get a bronze member card. Do it two more times and you get gold.

Tom didn’t play since the game got back running. He was the one who pushed me to join the VFW and I was glad to have caught up with him a few weeks ago and thank him for all his advice. He gave me a challenge coin and a Stork chocolate Resin.

I came to say thanks to him and didn’t see him but went up to Ed’s room and he was home. That was when Ed told me to start the game again. If not for Tom the game would probably still be not going. My MIL told me that Sweet Dee also called her after she heard the residents wanted to play around the same time.

Funny how things work out sometimes. Thanks for everything Tom. You'll be missed.

Always great to see there’s a new post in the biggest feelgood thread on PCF!
Dude, I’m so happy to have the latest editions join the game! Hopefully the momentum keeps up so I can be dedicated dealer and stop taking these dinosaurs money! 🤣😵

And it’s not the easiest to be dealing a game that switches what we play every hand, has inexperienced players that need managing, a dude that can’t hear anything, noises from machines, sometimes children playing, and acting outta turn combined with more splish-splashing chips into the pot than a Bobby Darin concert.

Another fun night. The new player Nancy is starting to get the hang of the game. Both time she’s played she has left up money.

Ed and Sue both had to re-load $10. Quite a bit on the table.

Love the splash pots with the Heritage Inn set. Great colors and chips.

IMG_5835.webp

I raised and raised in this hand of Chicago, deuces wild. Peeled the high spade very first card. Everyone knew I had the Ace but still came along.

Ended up splitting a pretty big pot.

Up heaps by the end of the night. Over double the $10 buy-in.

Such a great thread... one of the best on the forum

You're awesome
I’m so happy this game is actually growing. Preferably we would have a full table of residents but I’ll take what I can get.

Patrick and Jaden, the two new dudes, ask a lot of questions about poker. I’m more than happy to coach them up.

Even sent the kid my poker tips PDF via email, which he didn’t check because he’s “not old”. I’m like dude when someone asks for your email you should except an email.

Brought my pal with me this week. He’s catching the poker bug after playing at a free-roll game a few weeks ago.

Both of Ed’s kin missed the game. One had car issues and the other had the runs. 5 handed worked out fine.

Ed and I were being “grumpy old men” according to Sue. It doesn’t help that Sues needling has become constant and Ed is starting to get pissed. I had to run damage control.

IMG_5923.webp

Playing Chicago. Both King and Ace of spades were tabled. I kept maxing the bet.
IMG_5924.webp

New lady Nancy is still turning the wrong cards over and doing fun stuff like that. Oh and she flashes her hand a bunch. I see Sue looking down at her hand but she “cant see her cards”.

I go well you must have a bad glaucoma or something to not see her hand.

She goes “I do”.

Idk what to say at that point LOL

Not that you need to hear it more but this thread is awesome man! You're a great commentator with a humour I connect with lol. Glad to have seen this pop back up. I'm just across the river near Windsor. Love detroit and Michigan, dare I say more so than my local area lol 😂

We were up and running once again this week. Last week the place was closed down because of a flu outbreak. Glad everyone is feeling better and back in the action. Sue even went to the hospital last week.

Broke out the Potato Sack paranoids for this week. Blue's 5 cents, Yellow 25 and Whites are a buck.

Games we been playing are Chicago Deuces wild, other 7 Stud variants,Double Board Pineapple, DB Crazy Pineapple, Omaha and Big O. Sometimes Jaden picks straight NLHE and we all give him shit.

This week we had a fun conversation about 90's country stars. We were listening to Suzy Boggus "Aces" on my poker playlist when I asked who would win in a fight. Kathy Mattea or Lori Morgan.

Sue said "Oh Lori Morgan would beat her ass."

I say "Why? Cuz she was married to Keith Wittley? That guy sucks!"

"No, he doesn't! KW was the best." She says. Then goes off to name like, six of his songs.

I'm like, what the hell have I started.

Jaden: Who are all these people you are talking about?

This is the warmest poker game on Earth! Feels like you are playing in a sauna. Both Ed and Sue are wearing 3+ layers and saying they are comfy...

Fresh fade is from Great Clips (As if anyone gives a shit)

I got tore up this week but Sue made profit and Ed had a good run of cards even though he re-loaded another $10.

I called Sue to confirm the game at about 5pm. She calls me back with some worry in her voice.

“Are we canceling cause you can’t make it??”

“Heck no Sue! Just calling to confirm and tell ya I texted the boys!” (Ed’s kin)

Her voice picks up instantly and I tell her peace out. I am expected to arrive at 6:53pm but waiting in the cash-back line at Aldi takes a few minutes. And I wanted some gum.

Rolling around the corner to the game room at 7:04pm all I hear is:

Ed: “Did he say 7:30? Are you sure he meant today?”

Sue: “I can’t remember, maybe I’ll go ask the front desk if he called. Should I text him?”

Patrick: “He’s only 3 minutes late guys…”

Boy o boy does Sue and Ed sweat when I’m late. Even if I call ahead to confirm.

Broke out the RT Plastics/Welcome LV chips that were re-labeled by @Gear. I originally made these for this game. HUGE denoms and a tribute to the chips from HCL. Kinda stinks cuz I ordered some add-on blues and reds that are a different shade than the others. Little bit slicker too.
IMG_6042.webp

Got full crew of regulars this week. None of my buddies could make it this week.

We did get a new resident to join. His name is Tyrone or Ty as he prefers.

First thing he says is “This ain’t a crooked game is it?”

Last week I gave one of my extra packs of cards and ran him thru the standard, casino shuffle. He dealt quite a few hands. Even though he’s slow and clunky I was happy to pass the deal. For one, Jaden needs to learn how to deal. Two it’s always nice to get a break from having that damn stub in my hand.

And three I want someone else to deal so Ed can get off my back about being a cheat. He was confused a few weeks ago and said I was dealing with one hand, by just flicking my wrist to get the card off.

I told him that the only time I’ve ever done that was if the person on my right asks for one card. I grab their discard and just flick the card off w/ my thumb. I’ve never dealt that way. I ask him to demonstrate and it all gets cleared up. When I make a good hand or get some wild deuces or God forbid the high spade, Ed and Sue will sometimes make comments.

I’m like “If I was cheating you guys in this game I would be a giant scumbag and would rather die.”

Anyways, having the kid deal helped me out cuz he gave me a couple of good hands so I could help my cause.

IMG_6043.webp
IMG_6045.webp

Ty had to get a few refreshers on general play rules and the different games we play. He is traditionally a NLHE fan from the TV but enjoyed the other games. Especially Omaha.
IMG_6046.webp

Ty was dragging pots and had his stuff together for the most part. A few hands he folded when he shoulda stayed in and he would re-open the betting by raising a dime on 50 cents or a quarter. I would auto raise when he did it and say he was opening himself up to getting blown off the pot.

The above photo shows he was holding Kings full in a hand of Double draw, deuces wild. He said he didn’t have anything and we were like “Table your hand Tyrone!”

He flips it realizes he has a winner. We laugh like crazy. He also rocks the Ronnie Coleman workout gloves which I think is rad. He’s laid up in a wheelchair for now. Feet stuff. They were all bandaged up. I didn’t ask to see them..

IMG_6047.webp
IMG_6048.webp

Jaden is really digging Omaha, and I’m digging that he digs it.
IMG_6049.webp

I got colored on what I thought as a lock hand. Jaden the kid showed the nut flush to take it away.
IMG_6050.webp

Sue did really well this week. She loves that we have more players.
IMG_6051.webp

I out kicked Ed in Pineapple and could not be more thrilled. I think there was 4 re-buys/top offs. Game got juicy and I walked away up a buy-in and a half.
