The time you finally went in debt buying poker chips? (1 Viewer)

I never went into debt for chips, but I starting collecting sets in my first couple of years here that I probably couldn’t really afford. Because when I lost a work contract, I ended up selling all my sets just to pay the bills. That’s probably influenced my current attitude that I only need to own one set to play poker.
But I’ll offer my mixed set, featuring those beautiful mint golden eagle $5s as a set I had to sell to stay out of debt.

These 46 sets need not be an investment you can’t monetize… Like real estate where the costs aren’t sunk….

I want to rent chips. T5 or T25 tournament/cash chips have value to me, even if for a month or two.

I know it’s a losing move when it comes to dollars but winning in terms of time to compile, build, list and sell. Especially if you build something you end up not liking (which I’ve done and maybe doing again as we speak with Cpc HHR).

Can I get on subscription model like OG Netflix? Set monthly fee - I check out 2 sets and return in a month or two and swap out as I see fit.

There is a lot of precedence for this with other “assets” like cars, tools, cameras, real estate…etc. there is a model to be deployed here that could conceivably allow a “Paulson” to be an investment - give it intrinsic value - but it may destroy the economy and TCR sales will end in picoseconds ..not seconds.

Sell and buy
Buy and sell
Lucky if you have only one hobby
My fly fishing hobby it’s MoAr expensive
But no debt
Are there fishing flies collectors, or flies too nice to be *felted* ?
Loved how Cyril Chauquet could assemble a makeshift fly with chicken feathers or wool bits when he needed one.

Try to buy Sage rods ($1200 usd each )
Fly line ( $120 usd each) waders, boots accessories because I tying my flies
Crazy expensive

Good. Show me what you’ve got!!! Haha. The fact that Ben and I are both NJ based makes this actually more realistic. Packing and shipping is so expensive in time and money that it would likely kill the viability. But when you’re a few GSP (garden state parkway) exits away it’s not entirely crazy.
Ben would be down I-95 into Virginia
Maryland (sorry Mark)

If you ever switch the 1 set you use, or ever sell again to raise funds, dibs on plaza rack.

I’m waiting for hotus to finish his rack, and then my 20 year journey picking up singles starts.

When I first got into chipping Paulson Pharaoh’s were readily available for $1/chip. Every 2 weeks when I got paid I’d order 100 more. That went on for several months until my set was playable. Growing up poor and seeing my parents struggle with credit card debt taught me to never fall into that trap.

Same with Colleen and I.

I actually have a lot to say about this. I’ll keep it short. I probably had about $50-60,000 in chips. I never bought them as investments, but I had always hoped that they would hold their value. I realized the only time I would really need to sell them is when the economy is not doing well. If the economy is not doing well, then the chipping market is slow, which means the value of them is down too. So i would only end up having to sell chips when they’re at their lowest prices which doesn’t seem like a good investment.

TLDR: buy my chips

I have certainly spent money I shouldn’t have on chips, but have never incurred debt to buy a set.

That said, I have surely been tempted.

Good god no. My friends actually consider me a miser. No debt other than student loans (about halfway done) and mortgage. I overpay on both of those. I squirrel like 20% of my money away to real investments (on top of what is taken for my pension). I've got my Roth IRA, a taxable bridge investment account, my child's college fund, a pet insurance fund, and a for fun trading account. I put everything on travel oriented credit cards (Citi, Amex, Chase, and Capital One) to maximize rewards and pay in full automatically every month. If the wife and I don't have our investments plus $50k in liquid reserves we feel broke. We mange this as school teachers.

After all of that, I can spend on my hobbies. Travel is priority 1. Gaming (board and PC) is 2. Cycling is 3. Chips are an extension of gaming as they are used mostly for board gaming (although poker is catching on more).

So while I would dream of having Tiger Palace, Empress Star, or Sunset Beach chips (my 3 favorite sets), I have come to accept that it just won't happen. I'll probably get a Tina set of Empress Star (different label) and Sunset Beach at some point. I'm probably SOL on Tiger Palace unless @JeepologyOffroad changes his mind on reproductions.

Btw @Ben8257 do you have a showcase thread? I’d like to see all your sets. No I don’t want to use the search function. Lol
I switched to IPhone about 2 years ago and still haven’t gotten around to taking new pics of all the sets, I am working on it slowly.

For the record DON’T TELL ANYBODY… but I sold a set of chips last weekend, and a higher end rack I didn’t “need”… might be over the plateau my friend! I still love the hobby but starting another chip by chip project at this point with singles prices NOT at all coming down like set prices… I think it’s better to just finish and enjoy what I have.

I did get all of the Tournament sets out last winter though

Back to this thread… the one that put me in the hole is in this picture. But it might not be what you expect.

My goodness, reading this thread you would think Ben said: "Tell me how much common sense and restraint you have when buying chips". You flockerz!

I will confess my degeneracy. I had purposely ignored TP chips. Didn't want to look at their bright catchy colors, thought I had missed the boat, didn't want to know what I missed out on. Shortly after blowing my wad on Brandon's ESST set I stumbled on a thread that had a link to Ken's TP website. Well F* me!! I had only been back in the hobby for a couple of years and felt like I had missed out on some great opportunities. Well I wasn't going to miss this one! I didn't fund all of my TP chips that way but I did at first for a bit. So now, I feel like quite a degenerate with everyone else's "I would never think of doing such a thing".:cautious:
