Hi all,

I was told to come here in search of some nice custom poker chips for my home casino nights and poker games. So far, I’m still learning about the different types of chips and the best ways to make my own custom ones. I’m a sucker for nice things, so when I discovered that premium chips and playing cards exist, I knew I had to learn as much as I could.

My favorite games to play are poker, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, and baccarat (mostly for the side bets)—in that order. As a statistician and engineer, I’m always looking for ways to optimize my game. In poker, this means studying as much GTO theory as I can, even though I hate the memorization part and enjoy the exploitative side of it more. In table games, it means either playing strictly by the book (as in Ultimate Texas Hold’em) or finding a statistical edge that generates tiny profits with effort that would be better spent at a minimum-wage job (as with certain baccarat side bets).

Besides my obsession with gambling and gaming, I also enjoy fishing (spinning reel and fly), skiing, listening to music on hi-fi setups or live at the best venue in the world—Red Rocks, cooking and eating (nobody knows cooking and eating like I do), traveling (mostly to Asia, I have yet to go to Europe but wish to go soon), telling stories, and getting absolutely plastered.

You don’t strike me as someone who’d be happy with cheapish China customs.

Two premium options exist:

1. https://www.classicpokerchips.com/pokerchips/realclaypokerchips.htm
Although not currently taking orders (new owner, relocation of factory in progress), this is the world’s only remaining manufacturer of compression molded poker chips (clay) that still sells to the public.

2. Acquire a Paulson set of your liking through the second hand market (on here most likely), design your own labels and either overlabel or remove the existing inlays from the chips and voila, you own a premium semi custom set.

One of the first things I stumbled across was CPC. While I would like to have my own set one from them one day, my measly student budget will force me to settle for some sub-dollar options. Your second idea is something that I haven't stumbled across yet, and I will look more into it.

I remember someone telling me to not drink good alcohol unless you can afford it every time you drink, or else you will develop a taste for it and cheaper alcohol will become unpalatable. That happened to me exactly. I'm use to generic home poker chips, and the cheap chips they use at my local casinos, so I'm not a snob about chips... yet.

My favorite chips so far are from my local casino called Monarch Casino in Black Hawk, Colorado—and although I still have yet to learn exactly what their newly redesigned chips are made from, if I can emulate them I will be happy. I’m a big fan of selecting your favorite chips and relabeling, whether that’s a simple overlabel or milling the chips and then labeling with your custom designs. Until CPC starts taking orders, it’s as much fun as I’ve figured out how to have chipping. From designing your labels to picking colors and edge stripe progressions, etc. There certainly are worse ways to spend your free time when you can’t play poker. Once you have a logo design you like, it kind of just grows into everything.

The list goes on, but you get the point. Definitely don’t have to just twiddle your thumbs waiting on CPC for customs.

Those tournament chips look fun to play with, especially with the MTT set, the colors definitely draw your eye to them. Are all of your chips relabeled?

The sets pictured, as it seemed relevant. But, no. I have several other sets that have their original labels I rotate into my game from time to time. Like a Detroit Jack set I have strong feelings for, as it was my first “completely” Paulson set.

The MTT set and a Cali colored set I’m working on now are primarily Tiger Palace, but relabeled. The large cash set is a mix of numerous chips I just liked and thought fit well together. Some Paris, Scandia, Empress Star, FLV, etc.

I would suggest getting samples and seeing what you like and going from there. If you need any help, you’re certainly in the right place! Whether that help is needed for locating chips, designing labels or just want some creative feedback. The community is super helpful in all of those aspects and then some.
