Hey guys, first post on this website. I recently got into poker with a friend of mine and decided to buy some chips in the hopes of hosting (or attending) a home game. I got 100x each denomination from .25 to 1000, totaling 1000 chips, from thepokerstore. They also have 5000s and I may eventually get some but I don't think I'll be needing them any time soon. I know it's not the best picture, but I am happy with these chips and hope to meet some Charlotte residents on here! Thus far I've only been playing in worldtavernpoker events, and while they're fun, I'd rather play for real cash, so if anyone knows anyone let me know!

Welcome to PCF.

Your breakdown (100 x each denom from .25 to 1000) is not playable. In fact, the .50, 10 and 50 chips are not needed at all. And I forsee dirty stack issues with the 100 and 500.

When you are ready, there are lots of people here who can help with a playable breakdown. You just need to provide the stakes/chip values and number of players.

For an 8-person .25/.50 cash game, you can easily get by with 600 chips.

100 x .25
200 x 1
200 x 5
80 x 25
20 x 100

Likewise, you can run a two-table T500 base tournament with about 700 chips. For tournaments, you're going to need a blind structure before a breakdown can be recommended.

Good luck with your home game!

Technically you could use .25, .50, $1, $5 and $10 in a .25/.50 game but it's certainly not ideal.

Thanks for the info, I knew it wasn't ideal when I got them. Just wanted an even amount to fill up the case I wanted. I sometimes also deal blackjack (not for real money) to my friends in which case a lot of them actually do get used.

Well, with a few hundred more chips, you could make a cash and tournament set. I would caution you not to overlap demons in the two sets.

If/when you need a breakdown, ask away.

Let's say I wanted to do .25/.50 and was going to get 500 chips.
(valuexamount)

.25x150
1x200
5x125
25x25

Do you think this would be good?

In a .25/.50 game that plays at that level with $1-$2 pre-flop raises, the $1 chip is the work horse. If your players are looser and pre-flop raises are in the $2-$3 range, you'll probably need more $5s. Fifty cent and ten dollar chips are useless. Each chip progression should be 4x/5x the lower chip denomination. .05/.25/1/5/20 or 25/100 and so on.

Gotta buy in quantities so 25? How many players max? What's the buyin? How many rebuys do you expect?

600 would be better, but with my group (usually 7 or 8 players for mixed games, $100 buyin) if I had to do 500 chips for a 25¢/50¢ game, I'd do

25¢ x 100
$1 x 150
$5 x 200
$25 x 50

The $5 is more of a work horse chip for us than is the $1.
