I think I’m either experiencing a rare phenomenon or have hit the manopause.

I don’t have a home game to host or attend, but am considering buying sets of chips. Is this normal?

For some reason I find myself mysteriously drawn to the colourful designs in a hypnotic kind of way.
Do I need help or is this a common theme among the PCF community? Please tell me I’m not alone.

Part of me hopes I wake up and it was all a terrible dream, or my bank account could suffer from serious withdrawal symptoms.

How many chips is enough? When does the urge stop?

I host a few times a year.. and I'm currently at 16 sets (if I count those ordered as well but not received), with ~1000 chips per set avg.

I just hit the point of realizing I have too many, so now reducing down to 15 sets.

I’ve downsized pretty significantly this year from over 10,000 chips, but I feel happier with my collection now more than ever.

Currently sitting at:

2x tournament sets
- Ojibwa (1000 chips)
- WSOP Rios (approx 1650 chips)

6x cash sets
- Big Top (1000 chips)
- Hoser Hut v2 (1200 chips)
- PCA sec (720 chips)
- National Poker Series (1100 chips)
- Bellagio (860 chips)
- Diamond Tooth Gertie’s (inbound) (approx 800?)

Total playable sets: approx 8300 chips

Too many. Around 6,000 or so. Little bit of everything tho! Chipco, ASM, THC, RHC, need some high end plastics to round it out.

I had a sell off at the end of last year of everything but my custom CPCs and a collection of ASM/CPC samples (approximately 6k chips I think) that I put into storage for my kids to deal with when I am dead and gone. It was a lot of fun acquiring a ton of sets, very liberating to then sell a ton of sets, and now I find myself considering acquiring some more sets for some unknown reason.

Don't judge me.

I was close to 10k, but I've given away my big tourny set (4k) and another 1k set. so now I own around 5k.

Goal is 8 sets around 9k chips.

Backup/Vacation chips - 500 slugged plastic nondenominated that started this whole thing.

Travel cash set - 1000 GameOn ceramics
Travel tourny set - 1200 T25 Sunfly 43 mm (planned)

Home cash set - 1000, 12.5¢ to $50 CPC (planned)
Home cash set - 1000, 25¢ to $20 Paulson House Mold (mostly complete)
Home cash set - 1000, $1 to $100 Paulson THC (mostly incomplete)
Home limit cash set - 2100, $1s and $20, Paulson House Mold and THC (mostly complete but always changing)
Home tourny set - 1000, T100 CPC (planned)

OH Jesus Mary Joseph and the wee donkey ! What have I got myself into?!

The numbers above are staggering including the link from @jamesjkim. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. To be excited or frightened for the road that lies ahead.

Do they become ornaments? Do you take them out of the cupboard, rub with a cloth and put them back?

However, after following a few well known members on here for a couple of weeks I have made a decision to hopefully get involved in the purchase of a small quantity of hybrids to kick start to impending addiction, by narrowing my choices down to just 14 of my favourite sets !

Not sure how I’m going to cope with the transatlantic shipping costs or the wait between arrivals, but here goes.

Wish me luck!

To answer your original question, a little over 20k chips spread over nine sets (three are the same chip theme, but with a Vegas color cash part, California color cash part and a tournament component... my Paulson set counts for two here as there is a cash part and a tournament part). Some have secondary chips that I can switch out when I feel like it.

Most get used in rotation with only my tournament sets getting the least use as I don't host tournaments at this time.

10 sets of cash/tournament, 12+ heads-up sets and over 500 singles I have around 18,000 I would say. I host tournaments monthly with occasional cash games afterwards and I have future plans of starting a Thursday night game. Now that the fun part is out of the way...

I do find it intriguing that someone who isn't and doesn't seem to have plans to host is considering getting into buying sets. It makes MUCH more sense to me for someone like you to get into buying singles. Especially with your comment of being "drawn into the colorful designs being almost hypnotic". That's similar to how I got into buying singles... I consider each one to be a work of art. Buying singles can be fantasticly rewarding. There are always new chips to find and you always have packages on their way, which can be addicting. Anyways, I would seriously think about what you hope to get out of this before starting. Are you ok with getting $5, $10, $15, $20k deep? It happens FAST. Do you NEED another healthy hobby? Seriously good luck on whatever you figure out. You will certainly be welcome here if you decide to do so.

Buying singles has little or no appeal. I’m unable to discern from a single chip if it has appeal. In some cases it’s just another chip, many of which look the same to me.

What does appeal are barrels. The edge spot colours and designs for me bring the chips to life, hence the logic behind owning sets. There are so many to choose from so this is looking like softly softly catchee monkey.
