I would say they often would. Most of the threats to random suburbia games are people that have either played or have been tipped off to how its played, not randomly checking basements for cash. If someone's played in a game that's strictly digital, lot less reason to kick down doors and demand everyone scan their QR code to transfer funds. Of course criminals aren't the smartest and still decide to rob the game, but eh, can only do so much!
Lock your doors, have a ring camera, and open carry.

I think the reason states don’t legalize is the legislators haven’t figured a way to get their greedy little hands on the action.

There is no need for poker to be involved when it comes to people stupid and callous enough to commit armed robbery and murder (for non-life changing amounts of money, no less).
In my area, for example, there was a murder of a farmer some years ago by bunch of young people, led by older ringleader.
These kids got the idea into their head that the farmer was rich, and kept a lot of cash in his house.
This gang was young and dumb enough to think that a few thousand dollars was a lot of cash. As it turned out, the farmer didn’t even have a few hundred on him.
They broke in, there was a struggle, and one of them ended up stabbing the farmer to death.
They found no more cash than you’d find in the pocket of your average convenience store patron. In truth the farmer was barely making enough to feed himself and his wife and pay their property taxes. Anyone with half a brain would’ve known that farms in our area typically carry a lot of debt, are hardly flush with cash.
That was the problem: not having any brains or sense. But politicians will always assume that poker was the problem in the rare cases game gets held up.
PS: One of the news reports that I read noted that the victim was not the host, and described it as a “targeted killing.” which is quite different, if true, then a botched robbery.

Public Health Warning: Do not attempt to rob a poker game in Alabama.
When I last checked it, home poker social games were illegal in 26 states, legal or with a "social game" defense in 24.
Some states keep it illegal, but don't go out of their way to prosecute it. (Example: Illegal in Washington, D.C, but several presidents (even recently) hosted well-known poker games at the White House.
Robbery, in general, is far more common in the U.S. than people realize or know about. You don't need a poker game to have a robbery, but when the game has more cash on the table than the average amount stolen in a bank robbery, you're asking for trouble.
In places where games are illegal, the robbers may believe they can rob the game with a lesser chance it will be reported or that the players will be hesitant to appear in court when it gets to trial.

OTOH, in most of New York it seems the authorities (a) won’t charge the players in a home game, and (b) will only charge the host if they can show s/he is taking a rake.
Of course a raid could still be a huge hassle, potentially leading to the temporary or permanent seizure of chips, table(s), etc. Also could make it hard to get players to come back…
Where I live in the Hudson Valley it is rare to play in a home game which does not include at least one public official or police officer. I even play in one game which includes the county district attorney.
The only police action I’ve seen was on one fairly notorious private game which operated far too openly and frequently, and was the site of several armed robberies. I never played there due to both its history of break-ins and the hosts’ bad reputation for not always paying winners and other alleged cheating.
In Florida, home games are legal as long as they meet the definition of a "penny-ante" game.
Part of this definition is that no player may win more than $10 in a single game. So while social poker is technically allowed here, even the lowest stakes games are likely illegal.
You shouldn't have any problems then!

Say you were holding a home game in a state that explicitly says it illegal, it gets robbed, and during the act you decided to clear holster and shoot. Bad guy with a gun gets shot by homeowner with a gun.
In everyone’s eyes it’s a normal reaction, you’re defending yourself…. However, did you just use a firearm in the commission of a crime?
Don’t get me started on the DC or other anti gun locations this could happen in, boy would that be a pile of fuckery with laws.

I use Venmo for this exact reason and I tell all new inquiries this before anything else. Specifically I tell them we play cashlessly using Venmo.
Cash is king but we seriously need to think about it. Just put pizza or dinner or anything makes sense money wise and frequency in the notes. You get food at poker too so you’ve got proof too.
