Things That Are Bullsh*t (7 Viewers)

Tipping isn’t really a thing in Europe. In the UK we might tip but between 5% and 10%. Sometimes there’s a 10% service charge snuck onto the bottom of the bill.

The point I’m trying to make is that if waiters in the US are only on $2.13 without tips I can understand why they chase you down the street if you don’t tip them.

To an outsider it seems a pretty strange way to pay people.
Yeah, makes sense for sure.

Back in high school I actually had a waiter chase us out to the street for leaving too much - lol.

it was in East Berlin (before the wall came down) and we had all this East German currency that was pretty much worthless on the other side. So we left like a 400 Mark tip and the guy about had a heart attack- lol.

IIRC, I think we got 20 or 25 East German marks to 1DM on the street. So 20 DM’s went a looong way - lol.

$2.13/7.25 is insane

I guess there’s not many chippers within that group
It depends what you think the intent of a minimum wage is supposed to be. I think a minimum wage is supposed to apply to teenagers who are learning what it means to work and be responsible, and not to adults who are trying to earn a living. Paying a teenager $17 per hour to assemble a hamburger or put steamed milk in your latte (or other menial tasks) is - to me - insane, and the only thing it does is drive up the price of low-value food and services to the end consumer. The intention of minimum wage shouldn't be to support a family. It should be a wage for entry-level, low-skill jobs.

Are tips reported to the irs?…I would assume so.

I wonder if folks collecting tips report income over the minimum wage or if they only report tips up to minimum wage then (accidentally) forget to report the rest?

No clue, but i would love to know.

Probably harder to cheat the system these days…credit cards and such.

It would be tougher to track with cash tipping.

100%

Seriously?? That’s EXACTLY the case.
Yeah OMG did I SERIOUSLY assume something wrong? I’m sorry.

If that’s the case, I agree it’s dumb. I still think the other end of the scale is way dumber though. Maybe you guys should meet and find a happy medium

Hating on drive through workers making enough for a standard of living?
Sound like you folks hate the working man.
That's bull.

You work 40 hours you earn a livable wage. I guess respecting honest work and the American Dream makes you a commie.

"The purpose of the minimum wage was to stabilize the post-depression economy and protect the workers in the labor force. The minimum wage was designed to create a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees." -Cornell.edu blah blah.

I doubt that’s the case
It is 100% the case In the USA, fast food restaurants are hiring people at those hourly rates and higher.

Is it though?
Like I said, that's what I think a minimum wage should be. If a minimum wage is supposed to be a wage that could support a family, then what would an employer pay for an unskilled, entry-level job?

Sorry to bring the thread back in a rough way:

Friend's stepkid, Highschool senior, double lung transplant. Waitlist, makes it to the front. The transplant takes at first, looking great, then body rejects it months later and kills the kid.

Absolute bullshit. Nothing is fair. Just fuming. Right before the holidays.

A teenager learning what it means to work is not "hating the working man." If the "working man" wants to earn more, then they need to acquire skills that put their services in demand, which will result in a higher wage. But sorry, flipping a burger or making a caramel spice drink are not skills that demand high wages.

That is the most I hate manual labor workers line. It's like I'm stuck listening to Rush in the 90's as I wait for my oil change.

So you're saying there isn't a high demand for coffee and fast food. I must be imagining those lines and billions in profit.

Huh

There is a big difference between jobs that are in demand because there are millions of similar low-skill jobs, and jobs that are in demand because they require a special skill set.

Huh

I have two friends that own restaurant chains. They work their asses off to make a fair living. When the high school, dope smoking dropouts demand $20 an hour to wax wrap a burger, guess who pays for that…there’s a reason YOU pay $20 for a half ass meal. The business owners can’t afford those wages, literally.

I'm so sorry Frank. My condolences to your friend's family.

Cool there's a difference so you just keep saying. They still deserve a living wage is the point.

Cool strawman bro. You can just say you hate poor people. It would be way quicker.

Guys. Seriously. Go start a politics thread.

No one cares your personal take on macro or micro economics. Are you a poly sci major? Are you an economist? Have you traveled the world and studied factors of and impacts to economies?

Please take it to Politics thread. You’ll find similar people who want to simply keep saying the same point over and over with anecdotal, not factual, examples. Plenty of room to share your ego and sociocentric beliefs and values there.

And because I believe in solutions, not problems, here you go:

I’ve made sure to unwatch it so I don’t get notifications. No excuse to post here again on minimum wage.

Polysci instead of polisci makes me think you're in a non monogamous relationship
