Cash Game Why so many $5s? (2 Viewers)

Most red chips look like shit, use Yellow, they do look good!

and me ;)
I actually only put 60 fracs (.25) and 180 singles ($1) on the table.

for 1 table 300 ($5s) is enough otherwise you're going to be making change every hand. If you only use large denoms, say 20s for rebuys you're going to be short on 5s. Once I have 300 5s out, I start coloring them up with 20s / 100s and recycle the 5s.

If you're running .25/.5 300 is enough in that break down, but another rack would be nice in a pinch.

what was the buy-in? $100? if so, that works. I would assume most $1/$2 games would have a $300 buy-in . 8-9 players would need almost all $5's right in the beginning. not enough $25/$100 for rebuys then
$100 - $300 (although I honestly don't remember anybody buying in for less than $200 out of the gates).

For a $250 buy in, you'd see
$1 - 10
$5 - 23
$25 - 5

Obviously most rebuys are covered with $25s.

Many of the sets we use have more than 300 reds, but it's what we've decided is the bare minimum.

?? You're gonna leave us hanging about why this is?
It's just one of those things. It would tilt me.

Same sort of reason why I have only 100 fracs rather than 120. (Not trying to start that debate here though...)

On the other hand, having so many racks of $1s or racks of fracs does not seem as cool and I cannot explain why.
I guess it depends what the 1's & fracs look like. I would love to have moAr 5's so I can gain the respect of my fellow chippers like @DirtyTIVA but sometimes they're hard to find...

Did not expect this thread to blow up, but in hindsight I should not have been surprised.

Got two racks of $5s already, for a single table. I see some people saying that's plenty. Some are saying more is better. Some are saying three racks, but no way do I want an odd number of racks (yes, one is an odd number but it doesn't bother me for some reason).

I'm convinced that it looks cool and possibly generates more action, and most importantly I'm not budget-constrained, so... two more racks of $5s on the way.

Exactly.

$1s are a fraction of a $5 too.

And $5s are a frac of $20s and $100s.
Lol true! But my point was to the comment of the OP that some fracs & 1's ARE COOL like the Cali RPC.

Another example would be the Le Cove 1's from your pic. I would also like to add the .50 is the Crown Jewel of the set & its nowhere to be seen : (

200 x 5s works for a game. 300x is more comfortable. 400x plus is only for multitable and people who want mountains of chips rather than just breaking out the 25s.
We get plenty of $25s in play. I like to have 14-16 racks of chips on then table when I bank my game. Usually everyone buys in for a $500.

That’s 8 racks of $5s

Then everyone buys a few barrels of $1s for tips NO RAKE

Rebuys are mostly all $25s. 8 rebuys a night minimal, that’s 2 more racks.

Deep games…couple barrels of $100.

2 racks $1
8 racks $5
2 racks $25

14 racks in play. If it gets deep 16 racks. Very similar to chip counts you would have w a limit game…2 racks a player.

We are also lucky have a dealer. Maybe it wouldn’t be efficient if you didn’t have a dealer. Bc the efficiency thing is lost on me.

Even better…once you get your castle of $5s, you display it proudly as if you conquered the table, hoard them, and play w ur higher denom chips for “efficiency” lol!

Breaking out the 25s because... Green chip best?

Nothing wrong with that, just not the way I roll. Would personally rather get some hundreds on the table in that situation.

The one thing I do think chip castles cause is looser calls for bigger amounts. Tossing in a few 25s in a shorter stack is very different than cutting out part most of a barrel when you have 4 plus barrels in front of you.

you can absolutely get away with 300 $5 chips for 1/2.

$1 - 100
$5 - 300
$25 - 80
$100 - 20
"Get away with" sounds like settling. If that's all you can have due to supply limitations for your particular set, then obviously you don't let it stop you from playing poker. But why settle if you don't have to?

Not settling at all... the host of our regular game has tens of thousands of chips.

I've never subscribed to the notion that a 1/2 or 1/3 game should be played with a huge number of $1 or $5 chips. I'd much rather see greens hit the table than have everybody with a mountain of red chips. Our weekly cash game usually has 2 tables of 10 and two dealers per table so we're very fast when it comes to making change.

I was just responding to the folks who said "you can't have a 1/2 game with only 300 $5's (which isn't accurate)

To each their own. If somebody wants to host a $1/2 game with 300 white chips and 1,100 red chips, then knock yourself out.

I host a 1/1 50-200BI that was initially a .50/1 50-150BI

I went for a 1000 Chip set that was
100 x 0.50
300 x $1
300 x $5
200 x $20
100 x $100

I pretty quickly figured out that the small blind being it's own chip was totally pointless, retired the .50's and made it 1/1. I also realised my players have absolutely no interest in using the $1 chips, so we now do 38 x $5 and 10 x $1 for initial buyins and rebuys in $20's then $100's.

Fortunately, I got into mixed games and picked up another 1000 $5's and 100 $100's for 10/20 FL that none of my friends are vaguely interested in.

So in my experience if you're playing any low or mid stakes the $5 will be your workhorse, and it's better to have too many than too few. If I could go back and adjust my first buy I would go:

200 x $1
500 x $5
200 x $25 (My players constantly confuse the 20 for 25)
100 x $100

This is about how my game places. Most of my players also frequent card room and casinos and mountains of 5’s always on the table. So I tend to mimic that. It what the players are comfortable with.

My breakdown for one table is:
1x160
5x640
25x180
100x20
1k total chips

This is one of my favorite things to rant about.

I run a .50/.50 game. Our breakdown is:
40x.50
180x1
220x5
fill with $25 chips or $50 plaques as the night goes on. But get all the .50 and $1 out asap.

I have more of each denomination than this, but this is plenty to go around.

The rant part

For some reason, people love reds. I think it has everything to do with casino poker. Whether you buy in for $100 at a $1/$2 or $1500 at a $5/$10, you get your first up-to-$500 in red chips when buying from the cage at most casinos. Why? Rake. If there's an ocean of red chips on the table, it's less obvious that they're slowly dumping all the reds down the rake slide. Once people begin to associate poker with oceans of red chips, there's no stopping it and every player thinks red chips are poker chips. It's kind of obnoxious imho. But people come and play for entertainment, and if that's an important thing for their entertainment, I'll go along with it. Sometimes I'll have 3-4 racks of red out, but unless someone specifically asks I generally have no more than 220.

When I ran a $5/$10 game for a night, $500 got you a barrel of green and no red. $1000 was generally 2 barrels of green until we ran out. Red was in the dealer tray to make change.

It's a weird fetish with this place that even I still don't understand completely.

The majority of home game players here play 0.25/0.50 with varying depth in terms of buy ins from 100BB to 400BB and up starting stack. Especially when playing pot limit games, you can have 4 or 5 rebuys within two orbits when you see pots that are 200BB's and over.

To me, there's nothing wrong with using $20's and $25's as your value/rebuy chips. They get used too, pot sized bets by the turn or river are $20/$25 or over.

The most common answer when I present this inquiry is MOAR chips and bigger stacks, but in terms of set building and practicality, especially when chip sets of high end chips are expensive to build, to me it's not the way to go.

Some also like to be able spread more than one table with a set, which is fine, but make sure there's enough of the other denoms too.

Team "use those higher denoms" forever!
