Poker Night With Pat! (old folks home) (3 Viewers)

@Mushmanchuman @detroitdad

My grandpa served in the United States Navy during World War I. He lost his hearing and had to come home to take care of his mother. By the time I was old enough to get to know him, he was mostly blind and had no teeth. The only hair he could grow was out of his ears and his nose. He scared me as a little boy. I found my grandma dead on the couch when I was 6. At the time, he was in a nursing home in another state. My mother is a ferocious little woman who brought him to Oklahoma and got the very best nursing home the VA would pay for. It was awful, but I went up to see him every single day for eleven and a half years. My mother would scratch and claw every day for the most basic of care. I was afraid to walk the halls during the early years because people would be screaming out for help or cursing the staff.

One time, my sister's boyfriend walked up to the piano in the general dining area and started playing the piano. All of the "inmates" stopped what they were doing to listen and request songs. I saw an entire change in every one of their faces. I could almost feel a change in the entire room.

All of this to say, thank you for taking a game to these folks. They may not be living in a disgrace of place like my grandpa had to endure years ago, but there is a good chance they would rather be in the comfort of their own home, or missing family. I'm sure poker night is at least one of their highlights every week.

One of my favorite threads.

I ran good 3 weeks in a row. Scooped a pot in Chicago after I made my straight on 7th street. I have started playing hands blind when I get up big.

Last game with the infamous Aria’s CM chips. These babies were great to me and I’m glad to pass them along to a fellow micro-stake player and new chipper @Tonystark137. Hope to see some pics of his home game when he gets them in play.

Mail lady brought me a package right before I left for the game last Friday. Perfect timing to break out the new decks and the new fun nite chips I got off of @BigSlick4523 . We used Tropicana primary 5’s for the nickels this game. Everyone said they were Christmas-y. I use my HCL tribute $1 as my $1 chip until I decide what $1 chip to get.

You are the coolest. These stories are great.

You are the coolest. These stories are great.
I’ll have to take more pics of the players and then do super descriptive bios and stories. I’m inspired by the Hard candy/Mafia thread. Haha

We have a new guy named Russ who legit has short term memory loss. I have to explain rules to him every deal. I’m not to sad when he forgets we are playing.

We were stoked to get Sue back from physical therapy. She was out of commission for a month and we thought she wasn’t coming back. Then she did and started crushing souls again.

We started playing limit Hold ‘em double board bomb pots. It only took a year for them to come around to the idea.

IMG_0457.jpeg
Ed just casually wins a pot with another Royal while playing 5 card double draw, 2’s wild. We do a normal drawing round and then we can draw up to 2 the second round. Usually a Full House or better are the nuts. We’ve seen 5 of a kind numerous times.

The old folks game is back up and running! I stopped playing there a little over a year ago. There was one lady that was starting to be really rotten to me so we stopped the game. Welp, I guess she croaked shortly after the game broke. RIP Carol.

Also we lost George, an original player but didn't play much. We lost Wild Bill as well. He was the Korean War Vet. Great men, hope they are resting. Also, Ed #2 got kicked out of the retirement community. Out of nowhere he lunged out of his seat and beat some old guy up at lunch. Ed mashed up the guys face pretty bad but broke his own hip when his chair tipped over. No shit.

On a more positive note we still have Ed #1, Marie, Sue and Sweet Dee. We played for 3 hours the other night. Games are Chicago, Chicago w/ one eyed family wild, 5 card double draw, deuces wild, double board Hold-em bomb pots and Chicago w/ the low card in the hole wild (and all like it).

Usually we play with a .10 ante, buy-in $10

Oh and we finally got the Heritage Inn's on the felt table. Fun nites as nickels. Next week we'll have a legit table.

I ran the RSD Inn chips last night. Easy conversion from dollars to cents. Petosa’s for the nickel. I dropped off the 56 inch round table. It's got the perfect pad railing, good car upholstery and some basic speed felt that has some waves from pulling snug. Kinda trippy! The top of the table I made out of an old table tennis top. The players loved it!

Brought the boy with me. First hand he gets a full house with three 7’s down. Next game is 5 card double draw, deuces wild. He gets 4 of a kind.

.

The kid was super proud of himself for how he played. I am too. He needed very little help and didn't make any mistakes. On his 4 of a kind hand he bet $1 on the last round and we had to correct him. He was not informed of that rule. Not that big a deal imo. He was in line with all his betting and raising. He checked hands down as well. Ed got upset though and cashed out. He said he wasn't cool playing with him because he didn't understand or value money.

I told Ed he was being unreasonable and that my son was in line the entire time. But, since this game is about the residents and not my kid, I told Ed that he will not be here again and I hope this will not get brought up again. Last thing I wanna hear next week. Luckily the boy didn't get upset about it and realized something was up with Ed.

It was a drag but it comes with the turf. I have no idea what got triggered in Ed but I missed hanging with him. Felt bad but it is what is.

My son left with $12. $2 profit and didn't re-pay my $10 stake. He pulled a Worm at the Chesterfield. He just won $2, so why go on the line for another $10? His choice though. I told him the juice starts, 5 points a week. He asked what that means. I told him I wasn't totally sure. Sue had to step in and square us away. Then she called us fish and dumb nerds.

We started taking 15 cents out of every pot for the kitty. When someone goes bust they get whatever is there. Nobody got felted so the kitty grew until the final hand. We flipped for it. Sue called the game, 7 card stud, low in the hole and all like it are wild. Sue took it down with the higher straight over Marie. I had about the worst hand you could have possibly had.

Keep posting updates. I will have to try and make it back again. It was fun hanging out with the old folks.

Do you have a set schedule? Work sucks now. I am back to working every other weekend.

That’s awesome that your son already has a grasp of the game! As far as Ed goes….sometimes older people can just get cranky. Like me 😂. Who knows?

Love this thread! It’s awesome that you take your time to run this game. I’m sure that it means a lot to the older folks that live there.

Yeah Bill as of now we play on Thursday at 7pm. I'm sure they would play if we play a special weekend game. I just got back into so hopefully we can play additional days as well.

Another fun night was had by all. Except for Marie. She was bummed out cuz she played like shit. Always does.

Sue and Ed talked about getting rid of the kitty because it just always goes to Marie. I agreed with them because it promotes her to play even worse and keeps her from buying in or topping off.

End of the night Sue had heaps of chips.

Wow, this whole thread is amazing. Thanks for sharing. There’s a retirement home near my house. I’m going to stop by this weekend and talk to them about maybe spreading a game there.

About the Chicago games, if you’re playing high spade in the hole it’s called High Chicago and low spade is called Low Chicago. Brings me back to my college days, when it was all carnival games! Guts, Chicago, follow the bitch, Acey/Deucy, 3-5-7, man those were some good times!

I was barley able to make it to the game last night. Busy AF all day and make it home at 6:20pm. I take 10 minutes to stuff cold dinner in my trap while half listening to whoever was talking to me. All I'm thinking "Chew your food. Don't forget the chips."

I whip into the retirement home like I'm David Carradine in Deathrace 2000. Walking into the room at 7:01 I'm greeted with 3 happy humans that say "There he is!" As if I'm super late or they were expecting me to cancel and didn't call the front desk. Sometimes I forget how much they look forward to this and how much they DON'T have going on. I bet they wake up early, at 2:45am, because they are so damn excited to play.

4 handed play and Ed called a fun game. Pineapple pass. They started playing double board Pineapple where you discard on the 2 flops. They kept the ante at 10 cents until I came back. Now we do 30 cents.

Ed called Pineapple but pre-flop you pass one card to your left. They tried to come up with a really witty name for the game and I told them lets just it call Pineapple Pass.

I start with A67 and pass the Ace to Marie. Prior to this hand we talked about just passing the worst cards to each other. Sue said "nobody is gonna pass an Ace." Few hands later we play it again and both Sue and I passed our Ace's. I got lucky and split the pot with Ed. Passing the Ace is pretty smart because chances are the player will keep the card. Marie didn't even pretend to toss the Ace. She even made a little happy noise when she saw it.

Got a pic of Marie with chips while she still had some. I think her chips just consumed themselves and disappeared into their own sloppy pile. I'm still looking for them.

Raised and raised in this hand of Chicago High. First card I peeled was the Ace of Spades. Forget who I split with.
IMG_4953.webp

I started to go on a major sun-run. After Marie lost it all I just could not miss. I scooped the pot in Chicago Low with 2 pair and the deuce of spades on 7th street.

5 card double draw, deuces wild. Second draw is 1 or 2 card draw. I draw two cards to 2Q9 drawing to the straight flush instead of keeping Q2 and going for a boat or better.

First draw I get another queen so after the betting round I shift gears and draw to improve my 3-of-a-kind.

Next two cards Q2.

Ed got beat up pretty bad. He is always a good sport even though he looks pissed! Me and Sue joked about him acting like he was on High Stakes Poker with the singles on the table. Sue said that was one of her favorite shows from back then and that she really liked Gabe Kaplan. I told her that she was awesome

I left with piles ($25 after 1 re-buy) while Sue and Ed each tossed me $5. I refused the tips but they insisted. I think they want me to come back or something...

It sure is. We have been playing 4 handed the last few weeks. Last week we ran my new limit set and some used paranoids for the nickels.

Out of curiosity, how did you get into a gig like this? I'd love to volunteer my time and resources to deal for a senior citizen home like this. Did you know people at the home aleready? This is really cool what you're doing!

You could walk in and sell the gig to the recreation director. I was lucky enough that my mother in law was the former director. I was looking for volunteer gigs around the same time she was working up there. Worked out great.

Now there is all new staff and ownership. We are not a "listed" activity at the moment, but we used to be on the calendar.

We ran the Crescent Star chips and Jerry’s Card Palace Cali $5’s. Blues were nickels, browns dimes and the yellows as fifty cents. All the chips are bike tires and played sooo smoothly.

Sue and Ed thought it was really rad that the crescent star chips came from an old time grinder and WSOP regular Clyde Coleman. And they thought it was cool I got the Cali $5’s for $50
IMG_5018.webp

We were playing Pineapple double board. Can’t remember if we tossed the card before or after the flops. I tossed a 7 and was drawing to the broadway straight. Didn’t even realize I got a Royal until after the river bet. I scooped as well with my pair of Queens holding the bottom board.

I remarked that it was my first Royal w/o wild cards. Sue says “Yeah and you dealt it to yourself.”

I say “Is that fishy or something?”
Sue “Yes.”

Marie started the night out like a Texas Tornado! She was raking in pots like a young Kerry Von Erich.

I had to capture her slop pile before it was spread to the four winds like sands in an hourglass.
IMG_5023.webp

I think I took this one down. 7 stud Low hole card and all like it are wild. Ed started playing this game. It’s pretty fun until 7th street is lower than your previous low card.

IMG_5030.webp

In for two buy-ins ($20) out for $32. Plus Ed tipped me $10. I introduced Big O, or at least what I assume is Big O.

5 Card Omaha where you can play all 5 in the mitt..?

Either way they friggin LOVED it! Ed called Big O Chicago which morphed into Big O Chicago Low. We played Low two hands in a row and I get the deuce of spades both times. (I swear I shuffled the deck well!) The second hand I had a set of 2’s on the flop. I almost folded so Sue wouldn’t think I’m a cheat. 😵 Luckily I did not scoop the pot.
IMG_5037.webp

Sue fired 3 bullets. Refused to take a loan from Ed and went down to her room to get more cash.

Half hour later she makes it back down and had a look in her eye that I’ve never seen before. It didn’t help her though. Ed and I took down most the cash.

We played the longest ever, 5 hours. Marie said she was done at 9:30 and was already checking her watch. She was losing and kept looking at her chips and then her watch.

I go “Hey your not thinking about leaving are you?”

“I’m out at 9:30 she says.” (It’s 9:17)

“I bet you can’t go w/o looking at your watch for he next 13 minutes, any takers?” I propose.

Sue takes the under and says she will look <6 mins.

The remaining hands Marie does not look at her watch and I win the prop bet. When she does look down it was 9:45. Haha 🤣
IMG_5038.webp

IMG_5038.webp

We still put 15 cents per hand in the kitty. New rule is you have to match at least half the kitty when you re-load.

Final hand we put the kitty in the pot and then play a hand. Ed picked Double board Pineapple, toss one card right away.

I flop a set and got cooked by Ed’s set of Ace’s.
IMG_0924.webp

The games been 3 handed the last 4 weeks. Marie quit playing because of people raising her. We tried to tell her to stop donk leading into everyone. We also told her to stop staying in with two pair or a straight when everyone’s firing big bets of 50 cents.

Honestly the game is a lot smoother now. I barely have time to take pics with dealing and playing.

The shit talk is the best part. Sue plays the rotten ol degen role to perfection. She is sweet AF but just loves to talk shit. It’s so much fun. Especially since Ed can’t really hear anything.

I said something that Lawerence Welk said a lot. Something like “hopefully hopefully”.

Sue said “Lawerence Welk used to say that.” Then she did it in his voice.

I go “Sue, you used to watch Lawrence Welk?”

“Shit, everyone watched LW.” She said.

I don’t know why but that killed me.🤣

She sings along to all the old songs I have on a playlist. Last night her and I were singing tears for fears everyone wants to rule the world together.

Ed beat me outta a huge pot. I played upset so he and Sue could berate me. I even fake cry sometimes and take walks to “cool off” after a $4 pot.

There ain’t much I can do about the players around here but, I’m gonna do my best to keep this game alive.☠️🤣

I brought 4 shills with me last night to fill the table. I was gonna text Sue to tip them off but chose to surprise them. Worked great and I was kinda worried about Ed getting pissy with my boy playing but he was cool.

I guilt tripped my in-laws into playing. I don’t like to ask for favors but this time I was milking it.

And my wife had something so I had to take the kids to the game. Luckily the in-laws live around the corner. Got them all to play for 1 hour then they took the kids.

3 of the house shills bought in for $5 and the boy bought in for $8. I had 50% of his buy-in.
IMG_5259.webp

I pulled out the Heritage Inn set for moar chips and because they friggin rock. Fun nite 5’s for nickels, pink quarters, yellow 50 cent big bet chip. (Can’t miss it) oh yeah the dark blue $1 chip as well.

IMG_5263.webp

IMG_5258.webp

Nice pot on some double board pineapple, w/betting pre. I called the entire way and got cooked both ways. Both Sue and Ed got to take a chunk out of guest stakes but most ended up my way at the end.
IMG_5267.webp

My daughter ended up $2 in profit. 35 mins in Ed calls 7 Stud deuces wild. No Chicago! Lol (that was mostly for Marie who always tried to play a spade in this game, always)

Anyways, I deal her :8c:up and:2d::2s: in the hole. She ends up with another deuce up and:qs: down on 7th street. When the deuce hit she confirmed they were wild, made a “meh” gesture and then fired 50 cents every bet.

She cashed out up and the other 3 lost a bit back. Both in laws cashed for around $5.50. We round down so the next pot was juicy and went to Sue and Ed.

Just finished first season of Landman, on Paramount. Great show. In it, there's a storyline that immediately reminded me of this thread. Love what you are doing for these folks!

Thanks Holmes! I wish that show was on hbo, which we just signed up for…

But, I will check the show out. Thanks for the tip

Fun night of cards with my pals Sue and Ed. We moved the game to Friday night and the first game was Halloween. I was gonna go as an ICE agent but thought better of It.

Ed had a rough one this week. His costume was the Clint Eastwood meme. Oh as a flex he is 95 years young.

Pat, where (city) is this game in MI ?

And I ain't from here, so don't go pointing at your hand to describe the location.

My girlfriend is from Saginaw, and she does that all the damn time....
