Plus, many of the want adds are looking for mint or near mint; including mine. So we want people to felt them, but we also want to buy them mint? Something suspicious going on here... :cool :ROFL: :ROFLMAO:
 
Most of my sets don't get played. I supplied my regular game with a set of relabeled Paulsons (tourney and cash) which would be the work horse that I usually play with. They are owned by the host.

I host a game maybe once or twice a year and have settled on a few sets I enjoy using (WTHC, Aurora Star Tourney, primary Horseshoe Cleveland tourney, Condado CIC tourney for tournaments and Tropicana, CPC Dead Money poker, Live Paris/Aria set for cash)

That leaves most of my other chips unplayed.

I probably wouldn't have even admitted to myself that I wouldn't play some of my sets until about 6 months ago. I pulled out a set of TRK's to play with. Nobody in the game really gave a shit about the chips. I could not forget that many of the chips being played with were $20+ a chip. After the game I packed them up knowing I would likely never felt them again.

If I was to host regularly, I would probably enjoy bringing a few more sets into circulation. But mint Nevada Lodge, Money tree, Pic Hobson, PCA's would likely not be chosen in the line-up.

I feel similarly. I once hosted a T5-base STT with Nevada Lodge chips. All those $25, $100, and $500s on the table in quantity was the most glorious thing I have ever seen. Goose bumps just thinking about it. But I don’t know if I could do that again.

I have no problem felting the lower denom TRKs in a cash game though.

If I had Lakeshores I'd sell the rest and only felt them, I'd also check players pockets as they left; I'd also wash them and carry them around the house with me like a security blanket

Devil’s Advocate - I get the non felting for high end sets.

I just bought comics for my kid, graded and sealed. He isn’t opening those.

I’ve showed my wife some shoes recently that are rare/collectible/expensive (I don’t own any). If we ever bought a $5k+ pair of shoes, I’m likely not to wear them.

It makes sense for some people have chipsets just to have them as their valued collection, and others to felt.

(And for all of us who say felt them all, we may not really know ourselves until we own a $20,000+ set heavily dependent on condition).

They all see felt.

If a project gets completed or a new set comes in, it typically is the next to be put in play. Still need to get my Tigers on the table, but my CPCs got in slightly before my last game and obviously took immediate priority. Besides that, every single completed set has seen quality felt time (happy to provide receipts :cool).

The whole appeal in chipping, to me, is getting them in play and physically enjoying them with others. If not, I'd just be a singles collector using dial-up internet on TCB.

Felting your most cherished sets with like minded players and chippers is what being in this hobby is all about.
Has nothing or shouldn’t have anything to do with a sets worth.
The people you felt your most prized sets with are your family.

I may agree with you, but your/our pov doesn’t invalidate others with a different pov.

Some people just play poker as one of many things in their life and certainly don’t consider their local poker players family.

It’s great to see everyone’s different opinions.

So far we only have Lakeshores and TRK Deads as unfelted/unfeltable sets.

Where’s the rest!

Your correct. Our opinions certainly don’t invalidate others opinions for being in the hobby. What I will say about that is this, I’m much less likely to felt my most cherished sets with folks who only see the monetary value in them.

I think many others here would be of the same opinion. ;)

This is actually one reason I'm not at all hesitant to felt most of my best sets with my locals....they really have no clue, nor do they care. Couldn't care less, honestly (I think they're favorite set is a set of Sunfly's I had made with their club name on them, lol). Anyways, they just think I'm a weirdo. They're not wrong.

Is that even a thing?
For my tastes, the most valuable grail sets are going to be older casino sets that have likely seen some play. But even if you can think of some $20k grail in mint condition, I don’t know, something like the PCA secondaries, but even more rare - to the degree that the value is contingent on condition, how much is felting that set a couple of times a year going to affect its condition and it’s value?
People talk about it here, but I can’t say I’ve actually seen it. I guess I’m not present for a lot of grail set negotiations, so maybe it does happen. But I don’t believe it.

I DON’T BELIEVE THERE’S A SET ON PCF THAT’’S VALUE WOULD BE AFFECTED BY FELTING IT A COUPLE OF TIMES A YEAR.

Not yet ^ but in 20 years the sets that haven’t been felted will of course be more valuable.

Will they? It’s not like there are set prices for anything. And it’s not like you can go to the rare set store and choose from the same rare set at different price points - near mint $18k, mint $20k. It’s just not how the hobby works.
How it works is when you get that rare opportunity to buy a grail set, you either pay what he’s asking or you counter. But neither of you are equipped with recent comp sales of varying conditions in different values.
I think minor condition differences are more a thing inside choppers heads than actual market factors.
