Hello, lately I have been looking at the SLOWPLAY Nash 14 Gram Clay blank 300 piece Set which comes as follow

White 100x
Red 100x
Blue 50x
Gold 50x

Is it possible to run a 9 person cash game with this amount of chips?

Thank You

No, it is not enough chips.

Check out this Thread, and check out the New Members Start Here thread, you can find the link in my signature.

To figure out your question, you'll want to start with the amount of money that will be on the table, we'll call this 'the bank'

Lets say you want to have a 40 USD buy in, and lets say you have 3 re-buys at 40. that would be 40 x 4 = 160 x 9 = 1440.

Since you are a new user, I like to point out that they are not CLAY but slugged plastic

Clay is often misused mislead by retailer

Also 300 can work but you are going to keep making changes every hand & also it will be recommended to get Denominated chip rather than blank

Are you running $.25/$.50 NLHE? If so, 300 chip set is possible, but definitely not enough. I would recommend a 500 chip set.
Thats what I figured. I only asked as I found a 300 chip slowplay set on FB market place for pretty cheap. I though the following 500 chip distribution would be best, but do not know if maybe it would run into issues:

8 x 25¢ = $2
8 x $1 = $8
8 x $5 = $40

(Buy in if $100) +
2 x $25 = $25

5th color/denomination is used as $100 if games grow

All players at or above $75 in their stack will be asked to color up

$75 - 199.75 will be asked to color up with $25 chips

$200+ will be asked to color up with a $100 chip

What's with all the mentions of SlowPlay chips recently? Strange.

To each their own, but I'm not a fan of the design or colors of the set. There are much better options for the price.
Its probably because amazon knows im just getting into the hobby and its populr with people just getting into it as well. I tried looking at chips on apache poker chips but the fact that it doesnt come with a case it doesnt seem as worth it to me. What do you recommend?

I am not a fan of that design either. I might be insane, but I consider having all colors be the same body color & differentiated only by edgespots to be a cardinal sin of design.

Noticed and thought the same. Poor shilling attempt perhaps to generate more sales? They came to the wrong forum then :p
What somewhat contradicts this theory though is I believe these have been on the market since a while already...

You don’t need a case….keep them on a table.

You need to tell us your budget if you are thinking about value, you are going to lose money when buying retail poker chips.

Only casino grade plastic or premium Clay set are going to hold value.

I’d have a minimum of 700 chips. 100 fracs, 200 1’s. 300 5’s, 50 $25, 50 $100.

YES, it is possible, but YES its going to suck. Constantly making change, confusion as to how to bet certain amounts. Do whatever you want but 9 people is a lot when you're first starting out with this type of set.

I don’t like Slowplay chip design as well, but I really like their case. I kept their case and sold their chips for cheap.

Slowplay chips are a great example of clever marketing.

If you’re looking at ceramics do yourself a favour and check BrPro. If the price point doesn’t work there are lots of great China clay alternatives on Apache. The classified section has lots of great second hands sets popping up all the time.

IMHO you can get much better for your money!

300 chips is barely enough for starting stacks, let alone buys ins. Depending on the time frame of your sessions, as mentioned 500 would likely ve minimum. I have 400 chips, with 8 players, but our sessions are 4.5 hours. I have enough Chips for 8 buy ins/top up to starting stack.
I have a new set coming with many more chips.
$.25, $.50, $1.00, and $5.00 for.25/.25 blinds and $20.00 starting stacks.

I have a same stakes game, 25c/50c, $50 buy in. I’ve come to the conclusion, like others have, more chips the better! 300 not enough. 500 is good. Breakdowns will then come to personal preference, budget, etc. Personally, with the below breakdown I think makes for a fun and easy setup:

200 - 25c
200 - $1
100 - $5

Starting stacks

20 - 25c
20 - $1
5 - $5

There’s a good YouTube video on it.

However, you could probably get away with a 400 chip collection and cut out 40-80 of the low denoms and add $25’s. I think so long as your decision isn’t out of the ball park, you’ll be fine.

I have be playing $.25/$.50 NLHE home game with my friends in Queens for years. As for the chip breakdown, we alway use $1/$2 denom cash set (no matter what blind amount we play). My case holds 520 chips, so my usual breakdown is:
100x $1
200x $5
160x $25
50x $100
10x $1000(just in case)

We like a lot of chips on the table so when I started hosting a 25c/50c cash game once a month, we started out with 625 chips || $1475 bank ($100 max buy in)
25c x 200
$1 x 300
$5 x 100
$25 x 25

and I've slowly acquired the rest to host from 5c/10c up to $1/2 safely (1200 chips || $10,610 bank)
5c x 200
25c x 200
$1 x 300
$5 x 300
$25 x 150
$100 x 50

Depending on your budget, you could buy a cheap set and upgrade later (pending changes to your game). Or a wise man once told me, "buy once, cry once"

Like you say, personal preference, budget, etc. But overall I think your set is a good example for what won’t work for most people. You’ve got a total bank of $750. Even if you cap your rebuys at $50, you’ve only got enough bank for a total of 15 buyins and rebuys combined. Which is fine if you’re in a situation where people rarely rebuy or top off. But if you’re playing no limit, that probably isn’t realistic for most games.

Like others have mentioned, you big probably do it with 300 chips, but, very quickly you'll see that it doesn't with well. Some of these cheaper sets may not be available when you come back to get more chips later. Then you're stuck with a 300 pc cheap set that will likely be a waste of money. Like @TonZaga stated "buy once, cry once."

If you know this game will continue, then take your time and get something that you can grow with. There are many sales, in the classifieds here, that will offer you a better quality set and won't be extinct in a year.

As far as storage goes you can use racks. If you want a case then you could always go the Apache case route. Search Apache through the search bar, you'll see many examples of cases that will hold you chips in racks, usually of better quality than what you'll get in a "set." The birdcage is another storage option.
