Priced-out of this hobby? (1 Viewer)

I legitimately had a guy send me his address Saturday at 10 AM. As the Post Office closes at 1 PM, they were sent out after the weekend.

"I'm a little disappointed that these didn't go out over the weekend......any chance you'd be willing to split the shipping?"

For fucks sake, it's like living in a flea market here.
Lol I don’t name any of my folks. I will say that my response was simply to say don’t even worry, I’ll just cover the whole $30 shipping.

I don’t have time for that nonsense. And out of everyone I’ve dealt with, he’s probably at the top of my do not engage list. More red flags than a matador.
You, sir, are a saint. I would have probably laughed at this request.

I'm just waiting for others to figure out what happens to Cards Molds as they "break in"... it's not pretty.

Wait till these cards molds sets get 25 - 30 uses on them... you fart and they fall all over the place, spin like saucers!

Can anyone confirm this? I don’t have that many games on my cards mold, but so far they’re holding up pretty well.

@SeanGecko as the cards mold king, maybe you know?

I wouldn't say I'm priced out completely. Just a little disappointed in the chip market compared to 10 or 20 years ago.

When I started collecting around 2003 or so, you could get custom TR King, BCC, or ASM. Custom inlaid TR Kings were .89 cents each. Solid hot stamps were .50 cents each. I don't recall BCC or ASM pricing, but they were around $1 per chip. Once TR King and BCC were bought out/sold/out of business, etc, we are now left with only CPC (for clay chips). Even that was in jeopardy when ASM was sold to Dr. Ott(?) and was luckily rescued by @David Spragg

So due to inflation and lack of competition, the set I would want to order would cost around $2.50 - $3 each. So maybe someday, but for now I will hold onto my BCC Protege set which is about the top of my budget.

So I'm priced out to some degree. I only play tournaments. Cash sets are much less expensive. Tournament denoms are just too outrageous now. Figure I bought my PNY set for $1.30 each for $25 - $500. The $1000's were $2 / chip (43mm). Just don't see mint $1000's for less than $10 each. Sometimes you can get lucky and get a $500 for $3. For my structure I need at least a rack of T1000 and T5000 which is no longer affordable.

Possible future chip orders: CPC and Matsui. That's about it for choices.

I remember customs being significantly more expensive than that, unless you mean without spots? I know you knew TRK/Dennis better than any of us, but I had a proposal from him in the early 00s that was $1,849 (or maybe it was $1,489) for 1000 chips (4 different edge spot patterns) w/ inlay. I mean if they were available today at that I wouldn’t blink.

is Dennis still around?

Rick, The picture you sent is a 4- color inlay. 5000 chips 4-color would be $1.00 each. No problem with the lower denom. Sincerely, Dennis

Maybe you weren't getting 5000 chips? That would affect the price.

I haven't spoken to him since I bought out a bunch of blanks after they closed. Hope he is well. I still have fantasies of calling him for one last run.

That was it. I completely forgot about the 5000 chip minimum.

Brother if he would even just give up his secrets.

Those are sold by a fantastic seller, no problem with him. If you read all the stuff on this forum and you really want to say you have Paulson chips, then those may be fine. In my experience (since the beginning of ChipTalk) beat up RHC Paulson chips aren't worth a damn as playable sets. I'm sure many here don't even know what ChipTalk was. And some of the "Gurus" here who are bowed down to, weren't around then either.

So beat up THC aren't worth a playable set either?

It depends. THC don't show the same wear from abuse as RHC chips. Look for yourself. You shouldn't have to ask this question if you had. But what the hell.. You have PAULSON chips and now you're SOMEBODY

Edit: This sounds too personal. And I apologize for that. When I say "you", I mean "a person". All this stuff is subjective. And my viewpoint is mine. I should put it more mildly. For one being online in this hobby for so long, I am mortified at what's been going on... All over PAULSON chips. I've sold chips within what used to be "the community" for little to no profit and at times a loss because it was to like minded "chip geeks". People sold to me reasonably so I could have a set, I did the same. And on it went. Things are MUCH different now. I guess if people have money to spend, it's up to them. I just don't understand it. Things like $600 for a rack of chips.. Really?
I guess I'd rather play with a nice new set of cheap chips that stack and handle well than beat up RHC chips. For something so sought after, they are downright disgusting to me.

I figure at point of bike tires I don't see much difference.

Homepokertourney.com or was it .org? Was where it was at for poker chips back in 2005 for a few years. Nothing compared to the front end detail of info on what is currently available as there was on that site back then.

I remember Gulf Port Mississippi chips were being bad talked back then for the dirt/grime and smell lol. Azatars in a similar grain but Presidents New York were always highly thought of.

What did you do with your blanks? I bought a small amount of them as well with visions of custom hot stamping and 20 yrs later they still sit a case.

Get a drill and some solids. :)

It's rough right now due to inflation.

But soon we will get to a criticality, where times get so tough for many players that they will start unloading those Paulson/TRK/BCC/ASM/CPC sets for lower prices.

I promise it's on the horizon. And it's not good.

The question is...who will have the $$$ to purchase the deluge of chips during those tough times ?

I think myself and any other TRK owners out there just might prove the TRK part of your statement wrong.
My TRKs will go to the grave with me before I let some “looking to flip” “Johnny come lately” with a couple bucks get their hands on my babies.

Will probably be as you say for all those other chips you mention but your wrong about these sets right here. ;)
“REAL” TRK folks aren’t SELLOUTS!

Don’t underestimate the power of the degens. There will always be a bid for the right chips. If anything, the Tiger Palace sales proved that.

word!

Ok. But what about Johnny come latelies who aren’t looking to flip?
When it comes to TRKs, you won’t see ANY showing up in a future NAGB. If someone new to the market desires a turnkey playable set of Historical chips that possibly took a collector years to assemble, it’s going to come with a hefty price tag, recession or not.

Personally I’m not opposed to selling or trading with anyone, new member or old. I would however eat my TRKs before I let someone insult my time, effort and appreciation for them.

There’s another NAGB train coming and it’s not TRKs. ;)

Right on…

You can just sense the passion man!

Make sure I get invited. I’ll bring over some orange slices of NL $5s and we can enjoy a bite together! Haha!
