OK, we do play for "big" money (2 Viewers)

I will never understand those sentiments from guys about the wife controlling everything with an evil she beast attitude... All that tells me when I hear that is "here's another guy who obviously married the wrong woman.". ;)
Full disclosure, my wife is awesome. But I still don't want to push it!

To doc's point, pulling out the bankroll is the biggest thing keeping me from the attending the post, windy city or derby city. Doubly so since I have to expect to get crushed at the cash tables.

The 1c/2c set thread has been good perspective.

Hey, I said it was an impulse and a gamble. If I had a spreadsheet, I wouldn't even consider selling. I'm pretty sure I'd be losing money, though.

OTOH, my wife would be quite happy.
I have this deal with my friend who is a compulsive collector of cool things. He no longer can even remember all the crap he's purchased. Sports memorabilia, etc. He has a storage unit where he keeps most of the stuff that for whatever reason (space and/or wife) he can't store at home. I've begged him to let me unpack his storage shed if he gets hit by a bus. It'll be like that scene in the Nick Cage movie National Treasure where they light the oil to illuminate the room with all the hoarded treasure.

You can get that sense of humor repaired at the local pub...

You can learn funny jokes if you ever leave whatever "pub" you are talking about. Hey, after I learn to laugh at that one maybe you can teach me the brilliance of a "men never ask for directions" joke.:rolleyes::rolleyes: ;)

Whoa, I've been vanquished in a fair fight.

As your prize, I've submitted you for inclusion in an update appendix to this book:

p.s. Real men us a GPS.

Income, disposable income, and comfort level all combine to what limits one finds acceptable. While I can afford to play higher stakes as I have the income and disposable income to do so, I am cognizant of my limitations, so my comfort level keeps me to a 1/2 game. I try to play lower limit games as the mistakes are not as costly, and I usually have a good time, up or down a bit, it was the price of entertainment as I think I am more of a social player interested in having fun, but losing $500-$1500 is no longer fun for me, it is me being milked, and that is just wrong on several levels, kinda like this

I don't want to be the cash cow or fish or sucker, hence my limiting the levels I play at. If I am there to have fun and I lose, ok. If I am there to be sheared, thanks but no.

Also, I would not want some delivery person to know I run a game, because while he may be okay, his buddy that he's telling about this nice house where there is a big poker game with crazy money on the tables might not be someone you want to know these things.

I have sat at games where some people should not have been playing because all the money they had for the week was on the table. I don't like playing against that type of player for several reasons, mostly because I feel guilty when I take their rent, or the desperation oozing off them to win every time.

If I ever hosted a game, making sure it was not rent or utilities they were playing with would be one of my requirements.

Thank you @pltrgyst , I feel like it's been a good day. 2:20pm on the West Coast and I have accomplished so much, I may just put the address for my local pub into my gps and go hide from the old ball and chain for a few hours before she realizes I'm having fun. :D ;)

When someone asks about the cost of the chips, I usually point out the T5000s ran $3.66, per chip. The look on their face as they think, wow, that's cheap - and there's 30 chips in from of me, and there's 3 tables of 7 or 8 running.... Then there's the look of HOLY SHIT!

As for disposable income, I know my comfort level. It's my guests that I'm concerned about as the host. If I were to double the stakes and lose 1/4 of my players, that is still a loss to me. It's always tough - especially when you're familiar with how much some of your guests make (hint: it's more than a fireman) - to figure out when or how you can raise the stakes, because everyone has a different "risk tolerance" or "acceptable cost of entertainment". Those numbers seem much higher when you're younger.

I would love for my poker league to run at a substantially higher buy in than it does but I'd lose most of my regulars if it did and I have a lot of fun playing with my regulars.

The mark of a good regular game is a host that knows his regulars.

^^ This was my first thought when I read Courage's post above about letting the Jimmy Johns delivery guy enter the basement. Whether or not you have crazy money on the tables at your poker game; you don't want people you don't know thinking you have crazy money on the tables.

Five years ago I was in super awesome wake up at 4 AM five days a week to work out shape and got a 20 year term life insurance plan on the super ultra preferred level so we maxed out the coverage. Now I'm flabby and work out five days a year so + EV for Mrs Tree

Sounds like a plan. If you can take off at 2:20 on a Monday, you've truly got it made.

So to come back to the OP , we too do play big money with sum of gains / losses often exceeding $3000 (cash game or tourney)

Weird though that my players think I'm crazy to spend up to $5 per chip :)

I don't have the requisite skill to play these stakes. Like @BiGGyT I play at a level I'm comfortable competing in. If there was a newbies table at 1/2 I'd play it, but there isn't where I go. Seldom is there a game lower than 1/2 at my local, unfortunately.

Personally, I think NL is an awful game in a home game setting (unless it's a tourney, obviously).
