What I’ve learned from this thread:
It’s ok, even funny to make fun of people with disabilities.
Violence is ok, as long as it’s not real and it’s pretend. Nobody learns how to react to any situation by seeing an example somewhere, we learn our responses somewhere else undefined. Not saying we learn everything from the movies, but we are led to believe that anything we see happen in movies is acceptable, after all it’s been approved by a ratings committee somewhere. Catch phrases and fashion trends come from movies and TVs, why wouldnt some of our behavior?
If you are an actor, you should not have any expectation of privacy, modesty, or to be treated civilly. You give that up when you join the public eye.
If you are a comedian, you can do anything and say anything because it’s your job. Society has hired you to go out and make moral judgements and then write jokes making fun of them. Severed heads are fine, that’s funny as hell. Telling someone that their soiuse is fat and ugly is perfectly acceptable - if it’s your job - and no one should ever get offended, it’s just one of the funniest things you’ll ever hear and you should be laughing it up.

This is why at first I thought it was scripted.
But everything after was phenomenal acting. Chris couldn’t talk right, and he’s not even a good actor.

You interpretation of the discussion seems very black and white while leaving no room for context.
The Smith family open themselves up publicly by sharing all of their family issues and drama on Jada’s show. Will, rather than direct his anger towards himself or his wife or the keyboard warriors or the guy that his wife cheated on him with, he decided to lash out physically at a professional stand up comic in a public venue while he was brought in to do jokes about the audience.
This same comic has a working friendship and working relationship with both Will and Jada (fresh prince, Madagascar). His joke didn’t call Jada fat or ugly but rather compared hairstyle likeness to a strong female character played by Demi Moore in GI Jane.
I could see how a Michael Richard’s (Cosmo Kramer) racial commentary during his stand up years ago could warrant a slap in the face. Compare that to what Chris Rock said and your perspective may slightly change.
Just one question. Does it cost money to learn this stuff from the “experts”? (Books, subscriptions, newsletters, etc)
If yes (which of course it does), I rest my case -

you’ve been lead to believe that everything we see in film is acceptable behaviour in real life? I mean, you’re the one whose defending will smiths reaction so it doesn’t seem like you’re being facetious. There’s no cohesiveness to the point you’re trying to make.
Sounds like the gematria may be right up your alley.
But otherwise, I’m glad you learnt something. Comedians making fun of a celebrities appearance at an awards ceremony is acceptable. Making fun of people’s wives in personal interactions, not so much.

Per the guidelines established in this thread I can say anything about you and you should just take it as a joke, since I don’t know your circumstances or situations. Also since I’m making a joke I don’t have to worry about finding out those things - that’s on you, and it is impossible for me to offend you because I don’t know what might offend you.

One guy was a pro wrestler and the other was a bizarre performance artist - they're not quite the same as chris rock and will smith

You know what they had for lunch? Doesn’t matter, they don’t remember either.
Don’t worry about them being offended, they will forget that in a few minutes too.
Damn these jokes just write themselves. I’m sure everyone that has a loved one with Alzheimer’s is laughing it up right now. Physical deformities and acquired illnesses are just supreme fodder for hilarious jokes.
If somebody signs up for a swinger lifestyle they expect jokes and criticism. If you sign up for a celebrity roast expect humor and ridicule.
If you contract a disease or have a congenital defect you shouldn’t automatically qualify for the joke olympics no matter what you do for a living.

The Academy handled the situation poorly by not even kicking out Smith. Maybe the local police should charge Smith because it sends a message of: "I don't care WHO you are, physical violence won't be tolerated." And, simply put, they have mountains of evidence. Open and shut case.
Crazy he accepted an award 20 minutes later. Absolutely should have had him leave. No wonder they put up with pedophile and sexual assaults in LA.

What’s the joke if not the baldness? Was jada the GI Jane in the original? Does she resemble Demi Moore? What’s the joke if it’s not baldness?
The problem with rules is who gets to make them. If we make rules as a society that’s progressive. It’s also a messy process and comedians live on the bleeding edge. Mistakes will happen. But if we kill all the jesters there might not be any truth tellers. Comedy and tragedy live together in a dance. The worst tragedies like awful illnesses and events, are also a source of humor. It’s how human being process things, or at least some do. I can laugh at a 9/11 joke even though that day was a scaring event in my life. My point is that there are no hard rules and the minute you set them expect pushback.
Hopefully we can all agree it is still okay to make fun of short people. As a remind my director of HR when they protest about my inclusion of minimum height requirements in my department’s job descriptions, “height is not a protected class”.

Lots of division on this one. A number of people think it's fake/scripted for attention, but I think Will's reaction when he's shouting for Chris to keep his wifes name out of his fucking mouth that it seemed real/raw to me. Although the lack of any security response was odd, but perhaps they were concerned about creating more of a scene?
I do think it's somewhat bullshit because as others have said you can see Will laughing after the joke but Jada rolls her eyes/gives the side-eye and she probably leaned over saying "that ain't funny!" and then Will was like "shit, I gotta live with this bitch, well, guess I better go hit him"
What I'm wondering is what happens if the person being assaulted by Will was a female comedian? Does security intervene then or does he still get a standing ovation later?
What happens if it was a Caucasian male who had hit Chris Rock? Would security respond? Would there be protests in the streets?
Because this was male black on black violence it seems like it was normalized/accepted, which is pretty disturbing.
I'm suffering from alopecia myself (a spot on my lower left chin) which requires me to shave everyday if I don't want to have this weird bald spot on my face showing up.
But at the same time, the Smiths are in the public eye and should be accustomed to scrutiny. I feel like the joke was relatively tame, she isn't dying from alopecia, and GI Jane is a fucking badass so while it's a joke at her expense somewhat, both GI Jane and Jada seem to be rocking their bald looks with fierceness, so what's to be so offended over?
