New To Chipping, Looking for help on deciding my first set (1 Viewer)

I've had a home game going for around 15 years now. We used to play more frequently, but still try to play monthly. We usually have 8-10 players now. My china clay chips(Progen80) have seen plenty of use and have held up great!! We've always done starting stacks of $20k and blinds start at $100-200 every 12 or 15 minutes. I have 200-$100 chips, 125-$500 and $1000 chips, 50-$5000 and $25000 chips. Tourney usually lasts about 3-4 hours. We do $20 buy-in with re-buys for the first hour.

So many great posts in this thread! I am looking for first set also and like the Royals as well, just can’t find the 500 and 500 so can’t make a set. Any ideas on where to find?

Alright... so I've started down the rabbit hole... Here has been my journey so far (Sorry if this is too long of a post).

Signed up for PokerGO because I got an itch to watch the Main Event. Binged watch all of those over the course of a couple of weeks. Got the itch to start playing poker more. Have one friend that host a poker game every now and then with 6 to 10 people. Last time we played was only 4 however. Of course this group is using dice chips. Most have never played at a casino (including me), but I'd say myself and the one friend that host is more into poker than all the others.

Decided I'd like to try to host some and would like to play monthly if possible with that group. I'm still working to have a good space to play at my house, but that's besides the point. Started down the chips rabbit hole and reading all sorts of helpful threads (not helpful to my wallet).

Ordered samples. First samples I ordered are the Majestics. I really liked the feel and the looks and used those to learn how to shuffle chips. Decided I needed to get a few more samples, so I went to Apache again and ordered a sample of Royals, Cinci Jack, Milano, Showdowns.

Right away, I didn't really like the Showdowns nor the Cincinatti Jacks (are these Jacks real Paulsons that everyone raves about? Maybe it's my inexperience). I really liked the Royals. The colors are amazing and I liked the oversized chips. These were my favorite so far, but decided I needed to test out ceramics and ordered a sample set of Tikis. Initially, I didn't really like them but the more I looked at them and played around with them in my hands they've grown on me.

So right now I'm torn between three, currently in order of what I think is my favorite to least favorite (Royals, Tikis, Majestics). I visited the Royal Pron thread and that may have been a mistake because there are certainly certain colors I'd absolutely want in the set if I got them.

I'm looking to create a tournament set. Originally I thought I'd go for a cash set, but we really play tournament style the most. We are pretty low stakes with $10 buy-in and unlimited re-buys. Usually will have one or two people buy in 2 or 3 times. Most of the people I play with have probably never used denominated chips, but I really want to try it out and I'm willing to buy chips to do so. Currently we buy in with $10 and you get 50 dice chips. So I feel like I'd need starting stacks to have at least 40 chips for my casual players to have plenty of chips in front of them. I haven't decided what we'd do in terms of starting stacks (1k, 5k, etc...).

Open to any comments or suggestions to sway me one way or the other. This will be one of my first sets and hope for it to last a while unless I get the itch to buy some more....

Unrelated non-chip info: Also I've got an order on the way for some card decks as well. The Poker Store had buy 3 get one free. (Bicycle Prestige - Poker/Standard, Desjgn Poker/Jumbo Victorian, Desjgn - Bridge/Blackjack Diamond, Copag - Bridge/Jumbo).
I was in the same boat as you, ended up getting Royals. Super happy with them. Also you should go on YouTube and search for Christopher M. He has a great structure and lets you know how many chips to get depending on how many people you plan on playing with. Of course you can totally find all that here as well.

Watch his stuff, was what I used to build my sets. Got the Royals for tourney set and the Banks for a cash set. Not sure where this poker bug came from but it got me good.

What did you end up choosing? I'm in a similar situation and have gone through a similar arc (purchasing samples of every common set mentioned here, ranging from $ to $$$.

By far my favorite chips were CPC with the horsehead mold. I'm debating either (1) buying a used Rounders set, (2) buying a new Atlantic Club hot stamped set, (3) working a few months to really dial in a custom design that will last forever.... or (4) going with a $$ ceramic set (e.g., Tiki Kings, Nevada Jacks) that will be awesome but likely leave me with an itch to upgrade.

Curious to hear where you landed over the past few months!

Hey! I should've came back and answered with what I ended up getting. I actually bought an Aria's Card Mold set off of someone here! I was originally going to do a 43mm group buy, but got impatient and decided I really wanted 39mm for the Aria set.

I got a sample set of the Mario chips and those were really cool. I've got a sample set of the Park Place chips and LOVE shuffling those at my desk, but I wasn't ready to spend that much. For me the having the casino replicas was awesome and a big deciding factor and the price of the Card Molds were just the best bang for the buck in my mind for the first set.
