Did a blind "test" - Copag vs Modiano vs Fournier (also a question) (1 Viewer)

Let me start off by saying this test not remotely scientific or supposed to be accurate. I was just interested in seeing what my wife would pick. Let me start off by saying my wife does play poker and uses cards regularly so it's not like she has no idea what cards should feel like.

I had five decks

1) New bridge size Copags
2) Slightly used poker size Copags
3) Used 2012 WSOP bridge size Fourniers
4) New poker size Modiano PA
5) New bridge size Modiano

I handed them one at a time to my wife (with her eyes closed) and told her to tell me about them. Then asked her after each one which she liked better and why (sometimes giving her the previous decks to compare). The results from her favorite to least favorite:

1) WSOP Fourniers
2) Bridge size Modianos
3) Modiano PA
4) Poker size Copags
5) Bridge size Copags

I tend to agree with her. When I was playing with them myself I ranked them Fourniers = Bridge Modianos > Rest. I may be biased though as I used to be a dealer and have different preferences to a run of the mill home game player.

This brings me to my question. Are the WSOP Fourniers very similar to the normal Fourniers you can buy now? This means the ones with nice designs on the back and the normal ones like the 2525 and 2826.

I ranked them the same way. I could be slightly biased because of being used to dealing with bridge sized cards, but I think I would prefer normal poker sized ones as well.

As I recall regular Modiano's are fairly inexpensive compared to acetates. I've been using Kem & Copag exclusively for quite a while.

Maybe I should pick up a set of Mods and see whats up....

I had posted this in another thread:

Perhaps best feeling plastic cards, IMO, are the Regular formula, "Non- Platinum Acetate" Modiano cards.

** A few years back, because of the Popularity & Casino use of Kem ( using Cellulose Acetate), all the non-Kem, major plastic brands were suddenly tripping over each other to just get the word "Acetate" on a line of their own cards, by trying other types of plastic "acetates", some brands, I think, also just started to put the word acetate somewhere in their fine print just to keep up with others .
There were posts about early Copag, Modiano ect acetate decks being brittle and cracking, and other issues.
Modiano seems to have worked out the kinks in these newer formulas, but IMO it's still mostly a marketing gimmick, they're fine, but I don't feel the new "acetate" versions of these major brands are really any better at all over their "regular" plastic decks. "

The PAs are a noticeably stiffer card. Some like, some don't. I have posted elsewhere that Bridge sized Fourniers and Modianos are so close in quality and feel (to me) as to be identical in terms of my preference. But I still lean towards poker sized cards, and stiffer, which is why I still rank the PAs as the top dog.

To your question about WSOP v. regular Fournier in terms of feel, flex, etc. . . . a quick bit of playing around leads me to believe that the formulas are the same. It is one of the reasons I picked up a whack of the Fournier made WSOP set-ups

TO BE CLEAR, because I am a Modiano fan-boy . . .
If your preference is for BRIDGE sized cards, then get Modianos or Fourniers, whichever strikes your fancy or wallet the most. There is no appreciable difference in terms of quality.

Thanks for the response. I hoped the Fourniers would all the be the same so I don't feel bad about using my 10 remaining 2012 WSOP decks for a while. Between the 2 bridge size Modiano's and those 10 WSOP decks I should be good with bridge sized cards for a while (which probably won't stop me from ordering more Modiano's).

Which Modianos do you have in Bridge? The "Beehives" are very nice.

Also, most cardrooms will use bridge because over the long term it is easier on a Dealer to manipulate the smaller deck. Less stress.

Just the standard ones, not the beehives. I was considering getting a set of those though.

Yes, I play at least one event most years (sometimes several). Never seen poker sized cards though. Clearly I don't watch enough on TV.

Narrow ( bridge) size has Always been the standard for poker in all major US Casinos for a hundred years, in all WSOP's since the 1st, Pros ect ...
It's "Poker" ( Blackjack) sized cards that have more "recently" been introduced for poker ... As far as TV, I have noticed "some" recent televised events have occasionally been using Wide Jumbo for the TV final table only, & the tourn otherwised used bridge ... such as some recent televised Borgata events.
They may have a "TV" deal w/ a particular deck ..

Always? I couldve sworn they use to use regular size cards in poker rooms.. i dont know about borgata because i started there late, i frequent the taj before when poker room still exists and they used poker cards... I dont frequent poker for years now and just got back into it so i don't know the history but 10 years ago when i use play it regularly, i don't recall using only bridge size.. and when i mean regularly, i mean multiple casinos, house games, clubs, and even watching poker on tv.. Can someone else correct this if i'm wrong, thought they use to use poker size cards more often everywhere, am i getting old and going crazy? :/

Used some poker sized Modianos for the first time last night and was very impressed. Also some DaVincis, not as good. The Mods were spitting out crazy hands almost the whole night, it was really showing off apparently.

Would you guys recommend Desjgn, Del Nagro, Modiano, or Fournier? I currently only have and tried Poker sized Copags, and everyone I know seems to like them. However, I wanna step it up a notch.

I would recommend all those brands over Copaqs. Honestly don't see the appeal in Copaqs other than price.

If you play with poker sized cards, then I would recommend the Modianos. whatever strikes your fancy. you will love them
If you prefer the bridge sized cards, then go with Fourniers. Again, it does not matter which product line you choose, you will NOT be disappointed.

Thanks for the recommendations. I ordered Piatnik Presidents the other day (Bridge), so once they arrive I'll be able to see which size I prefer. After that, I'll order your either the Modiano or Fourniers.

Beautiful cards, but I made a huge mistake. I thought they were plastic, but they are paper cards. I think I already bent one on my first shuffle because they were so stiff.

Im told we will shortly have a new site vendor. Along with piatnik, bicycle, modiano, he has his own line of cards and says they're an acetate abs people like them more than the modiano pa.

I may try a setup and see...
