New To Chipping, Looking for help on deciding my first set (1 Viewer)

This is news to me. I didn't know any Burt chips were leaded.
Only ones I have found, the rest are around 8 grams

Bottom line says "spec heavy", bottom right corner says Burt Co. And these are definitely those chips

Very very nice feeling chips, haven't weighed and will in the morning but 9.5 - 10 grams.

I trust your hand, that’s a really cool find. Are those the horse heads the were recently listed here?
I love the inlays. I’d like to see some graphic on there, but if I’m rating inlays without graphics, that’s an A+.

And now I've just gone and order some more sample sets... This time from CPC. Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me and my wallet. :ROFLMAO:

Ordered some Rounders CSQ, Atlantic HHR, and Atlantic Hot Stamped Amold

Well I've got my CPC samples in. I also got 25 Tiki 100s in. I originally bought the sample set of Tiki, but there wasn't enough chips for me to get a feel for shuffling.

Initial thoughts on the CPCs, they definitely feel more premium to me. It's almost like it has a chalkier feel if that makes sense. (This is coming from someone that hasn't actually handled casino chips much). They definitely feel lighter than the Majestics and Royals and Tikis.

To me it seems like the CPC chips are much harder to shuffle than the Royals and Majestics. Maybe that changes over time. I haven't cleaned any of the cpc chips, these are straight out of the box.

Just messing with the chips, I do like the sound of the CPCs better followed by Royals, Tikis, Majestics. Kind of weird the Tikis jumped in front of Majestics since Royals and Majestics are China Clays.

As far as the molds for the CPCs I got, I feel like I really like the look of the CSQ mold. The feel of the molds all seem the same to me.

For the hot stamped, it does seem kind of difficult to read the text since it's reflective and the light and kind of play with it.

Out of the CPCs, I think the Rounders are certainly my favorite. The $100 is stunning. Loved that shiny-ish black. The $500 is pretty nice as well, the other colors don't jump out at me as much. On the Atlantic Club once again the black $100 is stunning as is the $1. Also like the 1000. The Hot Stamped have pretty vibrant colors, but if you have a similar color felt to one of those colors, it could be tricky. My favorites out of those probably go 5000, 500, 25.

I'll definitely be keeping all of these samples on my desk to just shuffle with while working and doing other stuff to really help me gain a feel for what I really like. Thanks for everyone that has recommended samples throughout this forum.

If you look you can see the edges of CPC's are not rounded like the China clays are. Once broken in, they will shuffle like butter. Also, give those CPC's a gentle cleaning in warm soapy water (use a toothbrush to get stubborn dust out of the mold impressions) for a few minutes and then use a dab of mineral oil on the rolling edge and watch those chip colors come to life.

Yeah I've seen a lot of people talk about cleaning and oiling the chips. Thought I might do that at some point.

I believe you can order Majestics and Royals with custom labels. If I was starting out, I would go for a custom mix of both, using Royals for the two highest denoms.

Anyway, welcome.

Yeah, I don't think I'd order a first set from CPC. Don't want to pay that premium quite yet. I'm debating between Royals and Tiki's for a first tourney set. Then maybe I'll eventually get a smaller cash set and will go the CPC route for that.

I love the looks of the Royals more than the Tiki's, but the durability of the Tiki's stand out to me for my purpose. So just got to figure out what I want to go for there.

This is making me cringe so bad. Isn't peeking at your cards a huge pain in the butt? And chips on a hard surface - it's like nails on a chalkboard.
Some of us chip maniacs recently said we'd rather play with dice chips on a nice poker table than with paulsons on a kitchen table, and we weren't kidding. Get a pad or a few table cloths or blankets or beach towels or a damn carpet remnant.

I just realized I didn't respond to this. It's not too bad actually. We actually played last night. Most of the time I just pull my cards to the edge of the table to lift em and see what I have. No one tosses the chips, so the hard surface isn't too too bad.

I will also add, it does take some getting use to shuffling ceramics since they are a little slippery compared to CPCs or China Clays. I used Majestics to learn how to shuffle and have been shuffling Majestics and Royals while waiting on Tikis and CPC samples to come in.

Newbie question, on a custom set from CPC are the inlays “baked” on at some point in the process like with the Paulsons or are they labels stuck on after the chip is completed?

Cleaned up all the chips. Went a little too rough on a couple hot stamps and rubbed a little bit of the stamp off on accident.

My cleaning method was to just have a bowl of soap water and I just dipped each chip in and swirled it around a little then wiped down with a rag.

Will oil them in just a little bit after they sit for a little bit.

Got em all oiled up now! (Sorry for crappy lighting) Just gonna let them site for a day or two. Following the guidelines posted here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/oiling-chips-done-right.14343/

Once they are done I plan on lining each set out with my favorite colors left to right and taking a picture of them. This will help me later if I decide to do some semi-customs and will help me to remember what colors stood out to me most when they were in pristine condition.

The blacks look soo good!! Also I didn't like the hotstamps as much at first (I like edge spots alot), but after oiling I could see a small cash set with them. Especially if there was a way to swap the 5 with the 5000 color.

Same as Paulson, although easier to remove should one be inclined

Alright. Got the chips oiled up (I think I used a little too much oil so I had to do a little extra wiping to try and remove some of that oil).

Went ahead and took pictures on the chips. They are lined up left to right within each set, my favorite on the left and least favorite on the right. For the ones with two rows, it's left to right on the top row, then left to right on the second row. (Don't like the second row as much as the ones in the first row)

Quick question for everyone. If you order ceramics from BrPro, is it better to buy via a set or single chips? Especially for someone looking to buy their first real set (have a case of dice chips)

Let's look at Tiki's for example. (Tiki sets include acrylic birdcage w/ chipco trays, deck of cards, dealer button)

StandardSemi-CustomAdditional Items
500 - 999 = $.65/chip
600 chips = $390
600 Piece Tiki Set = $465
500 - 999 = $.70/chip
600 chips = $420
600 Piece Tiki Set = $495
600 Chip Acrylic Carrier with Trays = $70
Dealer Button - $7
Deck of Cards = ?
1000 - 2999 = $.59/chip
1000 chips = $590
1000 Piece Tiki Set = $700
1000 - 2999 = $.64/chip
1000 chips = $640
1000 Piece Tiki Set = $750

So it seems like buying the "set" doesn't give you too much of a discount, basically you get a free deck of cards. They also have some sets with aluminum case.

So I guess my question is this, for someone buying their first real set is it worth buying the set to get the trays and carrier or would it be better to just order the chips, then order the trays separate and buy some other carrying case?

I do have a Harbor Freight near me, and have heard a lot of ya'll get cases from there. Thanks for any replies!

I think it depends on what you want to do and your preferences.

You can buy the chip racks from BRPro, separately.

Do you plan to travel with your set, or will they be stored in a room without direct sunlight?

My first set will be traveled with, not a plane or anything. Just driven to a friends house.

Eventually once I have room to host, I'll probably go for a new set for display/home use only.

then you will likely not need a bird cage, and would be better use a travel friendly case such as Nanuk

Alright. I continue to think about this poker chip set. Not sure when I'll buy, but I'm loving the planning process. Shoutout to @Ben8257 for helping me with some good denomination layouts for tournaments. (I think he also rubbed off on my already with large text posts.... sorry to everyone that reads this)

So far, I've been honing in on 10 player setup with T100 starting stacks with .25 lowest denom. I've also try to look at 12 player setup as well with same starting stack. See attached images for that structure.

First off, let me say I know this is probably not a perfect setup buy PCF guidelines. The players I play with aren't super serious about poker and it's an excuse to get together and have fun. Saying that, we usually play with 50 chip starting stacks (no denoms), therefore I didn't want to have starting stacks with less than 40 chips.

Secondly, I'm looking to make the game more fun for us (using denominations and different chips would be fun for me) and I think having plaques would be fun for some of the other players. In saying that, I think I would make the last denom ($100) all plaques so they come into play later in the game. All of the total chip values from the screenshots will get rounded up as needed, so I'm probably looking at 600 - 650 chips for 10 players or 700 - 750 chips for 12 players.

I'm leaning towards Tiki's for the durability and as I've shuffled them I've continued to like them more and more. Since Tiki only offers two plaques (blue and green) I would be looking at blue semi custom $100 plaques. That then pushes me towards semi custom chips.

From left to right these are my favorite colors of the Tikis (Orange, Black, Red, Blue, Purple, Green, White). Therefore I'm trying to think of what colors for denoms I'd want. Obviously blue is reserved for $100 because of the plaques. If ya'll have any thoughts on denom colors please let me know. I worry about having red and orange in the site due to dirty stack issues.

Missed your message the other day, but I have shown this to the players in my game.

https://www.antiquegamblingchips.com/mfgchip.htm

The short answer, and already given above, they are pressed into the chip as part of the manufacturing process.

Thinking on the TIki colors some more. Given Orange and Black are my favorite colors out of the set, they will be in every breakdown (do most of you put the color you like most as one of the higher chips? I feel like the brighter colors are often the higher denoms or the frac)

I'm going to continually edit this reply as I think through potential color setups.

Option #1: .25 - Purple, $1 - Black, $5 - Orange, $25 - Green, $100 - Blue Plaques

Option #2: .25 - Blue, $1 - Black, $5 - Orange, $25 - Purple - $100 - Green Plaques

Option #3: .25 - Orange, $1 - Blue, $5 - Orange, $25 - Purple, $100 - Green Plaques

Option #4: .25 - Purple, $1 - Blue, $5 - Orange, $25 - Black, $100 - Green Plaques

I don't have the visual... but ai think option #2 looks best to me, also the closest to traditional coloring I guess!

As far as brighter for higher denoms, you do want excitement when they get put in play, but with every chip matching that is really up to you!

A standard line up
20220101_124214.jpg

Kinda bright on both ends I guess

Thank you. I have put in an order and am working on the artwork. Once that is done, only have to wait many months to get them
My emojis for the above reply did not show up, I am fine with the wait, true artistry takes time and what CPC does is amazing!
