Trying to build time in a night!! Let’s gooooo.

Hahaha. I know. I have the perfect Paulson set for this host - but he is in sticker shock over the price. He obviously is not a chipper! Hahaha.
Opening your friend's eyes to the benefits of chip security is the best thing you can do for him. Bring a handful of Bluff Canyon $500/1000s to the next game and tell him: "no need for any big denominations, I brought my own". The Aria tribute GB is custom made for him. Attractive chips, reasonable security (especially as compared to Bluff Canyons), with a highly affordable price. He'll thank you someday when the game is one $1k chip heavy at the end of the night....

I’ve always wondered, and I hope I don’t offend. When you play the stakes you do, how does one have sticker shock on items that would generally cost less than 2-3 buy-ins?

I find acceptable price range to be very subjective. The better half always rolls her eyes when she sees what I paid for a new set of poker chips or fly rod where as I do the same when I see what she paid for a pair of shoes.

I think it is not about absolute price, but about a differential between expectation of value and reality. A lot of people have been playing with poker chips for decades that cost much less than $0.20/ea. To them even Bluff Canyon are the 'premium chips' as far as they are aware. Trying to talk them into something that is literally more than 2,000% more expensive than what they have been using for decades perfectly well is going to be an uphill battle.

I paid $21 for a Caesar salad the other day at a lunch spot and it really stuck in my craw. It's not that the extra $8-12 mattered in any real sense, but it was the sense that I shouldn't be paying that much for something that didn't have that much value.

@Eloe2000 has it right. For this particular host, the bluff canyon chips are “nice” chips. The thought of paying $5-6k for a set of chips does not register - not because he can’t afford them but because he doesn’t think it is necessary. Some guys just don’t see the value in really nice chips. With that said 6 other hosts of games I play in do see value - 1 host bought a full set of Detroit jack chips, another bought a full set of jack cincys, the 3rd bought a set of horseshoe cincys, the 4th bought a set of bud jones, the 5th bought a set of sunfly chips, and the 6th bought custom ceramics from BR pro poker. These 6 hosts love playing with real casino chips, but all 6 had sticker shock at first when we discussed prices.

This is so true. I say this all the time to hosts using crappy chips. I play in even a bigger game which has hi security - 2 secure doors, security outside and inside - and they were playing with chips u can buy at target. I explained to them repeatedly it’s like leaving all the secured doors wide open and cash on the floor. So they went from the first below chips to the second. The new chips are crappy plastics but at least they are semi custom. They were not interested in spending money for a fully custom set of hi end chips .

You guys are gambling for thousands but he's in sticker shock over nicer chips?
Yup! He is not interested in spending $1000s for a set of chips. I don’t understand that mentality now, but I will say that when I first joined this forum and saw the prices my first response was WTF how much??? It’s kinda the same response I get from non gamblers when the find out how much I win/lose on any given night - WTF how much?? Same crazy look on their faces.

I have the same response in the Taco Bell drive-thru.

Generally it's someone posting a top of the line PC build (or in this case, top-tier chips) and asking if it's "good enough" (i.e. dick waving) lol
Oh, hahaha. The post was meant to simply ask if it’s okay to change up the edge spots for the 5s in an all bear claw edge spot set. No dick waiving intended - sorry if I offended anyone. Haha.

Is the ES $1 an acceptable option for a BTP 5 in this set? Close enough to bear claw? Thoughts?
Just curious, what would the 5 denom be used for in that set with denoms up to 5000? Bounties? Tips? The different size wouldn't bother me then.

If it's just for different structures, and
If the 5 and 5k never see the felt at the same time I was thinking a 43mm would fit better, and also thinking that it might not be a bad idea to relabel the 5k as a 5.

Actually, I had not thought of relabeling the 5k as 5s. That is a great idea. I modeled this set after my SB cash set where I have 39 mm 5s.
