Hi all,

I am new to the chip game (not so new to playing poker) and I am setting up a charity (points only) league in New Zealand, I expect the largest turnout is going to be 30 players in a single game.

I want to invest in some top quality chips, to make the games feel extra special. Rather than the run of the mill dice chips. I am sure you can all appreciate this.

We will be playing weekly tournament for points, however once people start to get knocked out of the tournament, I will be setting up a "Cash" game, for points. so the players can continue to play, and potentially earn points while the tournament is finishing up.

Tournaments will be starting 50/100 blinds, "cash" games will be 1/2

League structure is approx as follows: You get 500 points each week, Tournament buy in is 300 and then you can take 200 into the cash game. i.e. 100 Bigs At the end of the evening, I note down who is up and record it for the championship prizes at the end of the seasons.

Therefore, I will need a tournament set for up to 30 and a cash set as well.

I am open to advice, suggestions and recommendations regarding how many chips I need. and breakdowns of denominations etc.

Also, I am interested to know which suppliers are best for shipping internationally (New Zealand).

Finally, after doing quite a bit of research I am almost settled on the Scroll Ceramic chip, with the specific reason being that the number printed is the largest I can find. As the charity league will be for older persons I want to make sure the numbers are easy to read. Any other large print/clear denomination chips out there? Let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t play tourneys so I can’t be of any help other than to say the perfect number of chips for a set is moaaaaarrrrr.

Hopefully someone can pitch in with some more sensible advice.

Take your starting stacks and multiply them by number of players. Add chips for rebuys (if you have them) and color ups. Then, figure out how many chips will be in the table at the end of the tournament and come up with a desired breakdown of those chips spread over the largest 2-3 colors. A lot of this will depend on your structure.

Seems like a really good idea and a possible solution for how you can get players to play cash games after tournaments.

As for chip advice, I would getting separate cash and tourney sets. I do play in a home game that uses the scroll chips. We play either .50-.50 or .50-1 blinds and they work great.

For 1-2 breakdown I would suggest you buy mostly fives. For each table I would suggest 100 singles/400 fives/80 twenty-fives/20 hundreds, this lets you bank 6100.

As for a tournament set with blinds starting at 50-100 you are probably looking at staring with T25 chips. A common breakdown using T25/100/500/1000 is 8/8/4/7 to yield T10000, adjusting the number of T1000 to your desired starting stack size.

For 30 players with T10000 stacks means you need 240/240/120/210 for starting stacks, plus and additional 30 T1000 for color ups of T25 & 100. This is 840 chips, get 60 more T5000 to make 900. These chips give you flexibility to make even bigger starting stacks, quick re-entries, and the ability to do later color ups if needed.

I happened across this site based in Australia, maybe shipping to NZ as well?

They seem to carry some of the sunfly hybrids that were popular in a group buy here.

Good luck :)

Tournaments will be starting 50/100 blinds

This might make things tricky. If there are no more blind levels that have 25 or 50 chips in play and the first level is the only level that would use the 25 or 50 chip, you might consider starting at 100/100 so you don't have to buy a bunch of 25 or 50 chips to use for only one level.

If the blind structure will have the 25 or 50 chip in play then all is well but let us know the blind structure and we can get more specific with the quantity of chips you'll need. We can also help with the structure.

WedgeRock's and JustininMN's advise is looking for though.

Structure could be

100/100
100/200
200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1000
600/1200
800/1600
1000/2000
1500/3000
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/8000

Starting stacks of T10,000

T100 x 10
T500 x 4
T1000 x 7

x30 =

T100 x 300
T500 x 120
T1000 x 210

Coloring up the 100s is 30,000 more in chips so add 30x T1000 chips

Coloring up the 500s is 60,000 more in chips so add 12x T5000 chips (get 20 for good measure)

which brings it to

T100 x 300
T500 x 120
T1000 x 240
T5000 x 20

680 chips total for the tourney.

I guess I did assume the progression of 50-100, 75-150, 100-200, 150-300, would require T25 chips.

But the important thing is to show to how to settle on a starting stack and multiply it out.

Doing a T100 based set can be done with a progression of 100-100, 100-200, 200-300, 200-400, rises a little faster than my assumption, but it would preclude the need for T25 chips.

Thanks everyone who has advised so far. Really great points to think about! I didnt event think about how much use the T25 chips would actually get. Really not much when I think about it like you have described. Very Helpful!!!
