Thanks for running the auctions and sharing the results, price transparency is useful

Would you say that prices achieved were higher/lower than you had expected?
I thought stuff traded quite a bit higher than where I thought they would...

Honestly, I really had no idea what to expect. Some I definitely lost money on, some went for more than what I paid though. I didn't want to spend the time and effort trying to research what 50 some-odd sample sets were worth on the market, so I just figured set em all loose and let the market decide.

Honestly, I'd prefer if every single sale on here were always auctions. Both as a buyer and a seller. Nobody can bitch about prices that way. Just let people pay whatever something is worth to them. No hurt butts, no bitter feelings, just a free market.

Auctions work great - as you said they offer fairness and transparency. I don’t think I’d have managed to buy some of these samples had they been listed as standard sales (granted some sold price might have been lower). And as a buyer, it’s always useful to know what the second best bid is for future purchases.

Didn’t think I’d be buying samples when I joined PCF a year ago but with certain sets so difficult (if not impossible) to buy, I think collecting GOAT samples is a nice way to be involved in the hobby. Realized prices in recent auctions might indicate that I’m not alone in that camp?

Agreed. Other than being absolutely sh*t housed in Vegas at the time, I knew I’d likely never touch any Empress chips down the road. Seemed like my best opportunity to experience them until I coax a fellow member to invite me to one their home games when these are in play.

That money is whack.
I feel like I should finally order those custom CPCs and defray the costs by peddling sample sets.

To put things in context, the proceeds of all these auctions would have covered the cost of my custom CPC WSOP tribute twice

(I took part in the auction. Picked up the Nevada Hotel, Lake Elsinore, Silver Saddle and the Stockyards. Not cheap but...For me it’s a cool way to be involved in the hobby of collecting old school casino chips when sets are locked away. I got in the hobby too late but that’s fine! My next set will probably be a CPC custom )

That’s a pretty interesting idea. @Tommy can this ever be implemented?

I think it's safe to assume that's a hard 'no' lol.

There are several people here who actually would prefer it the other way around, and to ban auctions completely. They're definitely in the extreme minority though. The vast majority of people here would vote to allow the sellers to choose whatever selling method they prefer.

Not sure why auctions aren’t more popular - but for whatever reason they don’t seem to get as much attention. One would think if these things were ‘rational’ that it would always be preferred from a sellers perspective except in rare circumstances that you have a rare item that might take weeks or months to find the right buyer, but for whatever reason the prices at auction are often lower than what can be had in the general marketplace.

I’m guessing people who want to do away with auctions aren’t really against it in principle as much as they want to have more opportunities to snap up great deals from people who don’t know what chips are likely to sell for.

they recently got moved from the general classifieds to their own section. they're used to be way more eyes on them, now you have to be browsing by "new" or seek them out specifically.

Correct, both vendor sales and auctions do not pull up when you click "Classifieds". Not sure whether or not the former is intentional though.

This still stings a bit..been wanting a sample set of those forever. Used to live in Bellingham and once went to the restaurant that now lives in the building that used to be Olivia's. I got distracted and forgot about the auction..all well.

Thanks for the compilation, price data is always interesting to see.

I can only speak for myself, but I prefer straight sales, and not for the reason you think. I’m fine paying fair market value or whatever. I just don’t want to have to compete for every chip I want to buy, against people for whom money is no object.
AND, once somebody with deep pockets overpays for something, that only serves to raise the fair market value or whatever, next time around.

I’m not saying that people who prefer dibs sales are motivated by this but people who want to eliminate auctions probably are. And if the reason you’re getting it for less is because you don’t have to compete against people willing to pay more that’s almost word for word what I said (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

I think I should pay my mortgage off by selling my sets five chips again a time.
I know you are kidding, but in all sincerity for all those that actually think this is a good idea..... Do you have any idea how much time it takes to sell off a large hoard 1 or 2 chips at a time? I do and it isn't a lot of fun. Sure, lets say you can get $50/chip for singles & you come across a hoard of 1000 of them. The entire world thinks there are 100 of those chips in existence, but now you know better and have 1000 of them in your closet. A thinking person like some we know here would try and milk these for as much as possible so they put 1 on flea-bay and it sells of $50. The genius that bought all 1000 for $10,000 thinks to himself "hey I am a genius, I bought these stupid little disks for 10k and they are actually worth 50k. I'll sell them and pay off my house"

Not so fast....genius...
the next day after selling the 1st one for $50 you put up another auction on e-bay once again and this time it only brings in $40. Rinse repeat and after about 10 or so sales the entire world is suspicious that a hoard has been found and your chips are now selling for no more than $15 and one recent auction went for $5...
Houston, we have a problem.......
