PCF at the Movies (12 Viewers)

Deadpool was just fine. First movies always suffer a little bit from having to get through the "origin story" portion of the character. Wish someone would just do one where it is assumed everyone knows the back-story, or will look it up before going.
Agree about the use of Colossus, but appreciated the joke about it, too. Carano is an Oscar winner compared to Ronda Rousey, and was better in this than in Haywire.

Going to see VVitch with my daughter later this week. And I am REALLY looking forward to 10 Cloverfield Lane.

By and large, I am of the opinion that Tarantino movies have been getting worse with each one. Django was actually better than Basterds, which for me was virtually unwatchable. Have not seen H8, but I am also in no rush.

I'll write a bit more about it when I have more time but the Witch was phenomenal. Saw it last night. But my opinion was NOT shared by the majority of the people in my theater. More than a couple walked out and there was a lot of "that was terrible" as we walked out.

It's definitely not a standard horror movie and if you go with expectations of straightforward scares and storylines you will be very disappointed I think. If you go in looking for more of an Ingmar Bergman/Roman Polanski or maybe even Kubrick style paranoid psychological drama, you'll dig it. Very, very well-made film. Definitely my favorite of 2016 so far.

Deadpool I was not thrilled with but the more I sit with it the more I think it was really really poorly done. The writing was just so horrid. I heard a clip today as part of a review on a podcast and it made me physically cringe.
 
Finally saw The Martian, worst movie ever. Great way to take a really good book and turn it to absolutely crap movie.

From what I have read, I am expecting a more "thoughtful" type of horror film. Not being a Polanski or Bergman aficionado, I would have said Hitchcock.

Much more atmospheric and internal than Hitchcock. And more indirect. But certainly Hitchcock is more the influence than, say, John Carpenter or Wes Craven, which, unfortunately, I think the marketing might be leading people to believe. In any case, just this exchange is enough to put anyone reading it on notice and adjust their expectations so they'll give it more of a chance than someone might going in cold.
 
Watched Deadpool yesterday and was mildly impressed. My fiance and I walked away from it feeling like we'd seen more of a comedy-type movie than some action-packed thriller. So in that sense, we really like it. And although it wasn't short of action, I also felt it could've been written better. Especially since they tied the X-men into it.
 
This seems like a good place to put this. I absolutely LOVE horror films. I'm talking heart pounding, cannot watch scary shit. However, I've yet to find much that scares me. I've just invested in a big OLED and am looking for some real good but possibly unknown movies that I might have missed.

What would you recommend?

The Changeling. Not the crappy waste of film starring Angelina Jolie, but the GOOD one, starring George C Scott.
 
Just a reminder: anyone who likes disturbing movies go see the fucking Witch this weekend. I've seen it twice and will probably go a third time before it leaves the theaters. Great flick.

By the end I was thinking that Mark Ruffalo's performance was as good as his in Foxcatcher which was absolutely great.

As I said above, it's also incredibly emotionally affecting. I love procedurals and I was watching an absolutely pitch perfect procedural on journalistic practices and enjoying in completely. But when they finally hit upon the trove of documents they needed to push the story to the next level, it was exhilarating in a way I wouldn't have expected considering the superficially benign action depicted on screen. And when they finally pull it all together and bring it down on the Church's head, I was drained.

I don't usually get pulled into "issue" dramas, but what allows the movie to move beyond that categorization is that it does nothing false to dramatize what occurred. It simply shows journalists doing their job, step by step, growing ever closer to the story they believe to be there. No one is made to be a hero. In fact, the ways in which the characters are not heroes is part of what has kept the movie in my head since I left the theater.

My boy has been trying to get me to watch this movie for the last few weeks. I wanted to see it. Time commitments were the biggest problem. Anyways, everyone got off early last night. We turned it on. WOW............Your review is spot on. The only disagreement that I might have with you is that I did think it was "great".

I 100% agree about Ruffalo and Keaton. More so Ruffalo. As with you. 30 minutes in and I didn't even notice it anymore. I like Rachel McAdams. I think she was solid in this. She wasn't "great" like Ruffalo/Keaton, and a few others.

Excellent movie. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. Solid write up @jbutler as usual.

We've gotten to the point where real romantic comedies are identical to the fake romantic comedy parodies that appear in sarcastic movies.

Finally watched Crimson Peak a few days ago. I agree. Chastain's performance was excellence. Loki, solid, but not great. The young chick, Mia Whatshernamekowski was very solid. I enjoyed the story, the scenery, damn near everything about this flick.

I was hesitant to watch it due to the reviews. Glad I did.
 
Comes out today. Likely seeing tonight depending on how late dinner goes. Have some high hopes for this one.

Cosign onto all that. No spoilers, but def go see it. Lots of fun and very well done.
 

It was not quite as bad as the reviews would indicate imo, but it was definitely not good.

First of all, I wish they would start treating superhero reboots like Bond films unless they're going to significantly depart from the character's most recent backstory. I don't need to see a reteling of the same origin story we already know, particularly where it almost identically mirrors the Nolan origin sequence. The least possibly exciting was to start the movie.

And the dream sequences are just cringe-worthy. You can see Snyder so desperately wanting to capture...something? But it's pretty clear even he doesn't know what. The rest of the movie plods along rather pointlessly and there are a few baffling sequences that make little sense (trying not to spoil).

As I write this I'm having a hard time seeing why I'm semi-defending the film above saying it's not quite as bad as everyone seems to think. Maybe it's just part of my generally low expectations, but I didn't hate it as I walked out, just thought it is such a shame so much time, energy, money, and talent is being wasted on these comic book films.

Would rather see 10 movies like Little Miss Sunshine being made than more of these garbage comic book repeats, so freaking boring. Spider-Man being remade after like a 4 year hiatus. New Batman with new director and cast after 3 years. Yawn
 
Ghostbusters looks effing great. Will have to get to the cinema to see that... Fuck the kids, they're on their own!

I pretty much agree with this sentiment. The best scenes were the Batman action scenes. I thought Affleck was solid. Pretty much the rest of the movie sucked. The story telling, the flash backs, Lex Luthor, ect.....were all really bad. Don't even get me started on the shitty cgi villain at the end of the flick. A cave troll? really?

The batman/superman fight scene was good, not great. At least until the last five seconds. Then that was probably one of the worse parts of the movie.......WOW.
 
Two things:

(1) If your local AMC/Loews theater (or one within driving distance) takes part in the classics programs, they are very likely showing an AMAZING double-feature this Sunday:

A Clockwork Orange


and 2001


Holy shit is right - two of the best movies of all time from one of the best directors of all time and you can see them both for $12. Killer deal. Must see. I've never watched 2001 other than in a theater, so I try to get to it as often as reasonable. One of my top ten movies and just insane with a good print and a good sound system.

(2) I almost want to take back all the negative things I said about The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 because last night I saw The Divergent Series: Allegiant and not only did it get all the same things wrong and in a much worse way, it also got wrong the few things that Mockingjay Part 2 got right. What a clusterfuck of a movie. It blows my mind that anyone thinks Shailene Woodley can act, much less carry a franchise. Can't say it was a huge disappointment (Insurgent wasn't exactly a high point for the series), but damn was it horrible. Contender for worst movie of the year at this point.
