My Journey As A Professional Poker Player (39 Viewers)

Rampage seems like a lot of what he does is "well, fuck it, I have bottom pair, I call........oh, got there!"
Rampage is a good example of what happens when someone wins a bracelet and then vastly overrates themselves.

It's either that, or it's all an act to get action. But given his play on a recent The Lodge livestream, I really think it's the former. Also, watch his video from him winning his bracelet... He played quite poorly.

Plus Vloggers can carefully edit what you see and what you don't. So they can paint a picture that isn't complete, for the sake of entertainment

There's a local guy who binked a tourney in Tampa and now he plays the highest stakes for PLO and NLHE cash games

He is absolutely fearless, but overly aggressive in my limited experiences with him in PLO, and doesn't have great hand selection when going to war

I feel like you can tell when someone is fairly representing their play or strictly trying to entertain.

I think Brad, Vibes, Neeme, Lok, tend to be pretty honest. I think Brad's goofy forced humor is kinda funny personally.

Jaman and Rude are clearly just for entertainment as they don't try to analyze their hands very seriously.

Mariano is somewhere in between, but I think leans toward the former.

But Rampage comes off as wanting to be in the first category, but does not seem honest at all about his ability. And he doesn't do anything interesting with his Vlogs to make them pure entertainment like Jaman or Rude.

To be fair, rampage never claims to be good. In fact, he often says he’s the opposite

Never heard of lok or rude. What are their full names or YouTube channels?

Btw, why not play NLHE?

Because 2 cards for me is:

1. Boring
2. Less profitable

The gamblers and degens are attracted to PLO, and I find it easier to profit, or even get unstuck, in PLO vs hold em games

The smaller pool of players means I usually know if a table is good or bad, and how to exploit my opponents tendencies

How does the PLO player pool compare to the NLHE one in terms of size?

We usually only get 2-5 tables running, out of a room with almost 50 tables

So you're going to see a lot of the same faces frequently
Is that enough to sustain a stable income?

once the fish stop playing, only sharks are left and win rates drop?

This September will mark my 2 year anniversary of playing. Also, some of the fish have deep pockets because they own businesses or have rich fathers, so they keep donating.

And I still see plenty of faces I don't recognize rolling through, there's always action. And even the sharks aren't immune to mistakes, tilt, etc.

Fish that play 2/5 and higher, tend to have the income to keep playing those stakes. Fish at 1/2 and 1/3 are more plentiful, but also tend to go legit broke (as far as their poker money).

True, but the recreationals also have jobs outside of poker. So they don't go "bust" because they don't have dedicated poker bankrolls. They just think "I have x amount of money burning a hole in my pocket, I feel like playing some poker, I'm gonna hit the casino this weekend!"

And then they dust it off, and have to wait for their next paycheck to try again.

That's basically what I meant. I'm talking mainly about the people that buy in for $100 at a time in 1/2.

What’s your best guess for the % of the player pool that’s profitable?

To be fair, COVID sucked for everybody, but poker pros took it on the chin if they made enough in 2019 that they did not receive a stimulus check.

All kinds of kudos to Anthony who was able to weather the shutdown on banked money. Way back in the AMA thread (and perhaps even this thread) there were "doubters" because so many high-profile pros go broke. Anthony proved that he had his head on straight, banked a number of months of "safety money", and came out on the other side.

I'm now pulling for him now, more than ever before, because he needs to rebuild that cache. But I don't need to tell him that. He's on the @DrStrange level of forward financial thinking.

After about the third time I heard, "Hey guys, it's your boy Ethan" I started skipping past the talk and just watching his poker hands.

TBH, I find it helpful to watch good and bad players, and to listen to how they view their own play and the play of others at the table. But he's way down the list for me - I mostly watch Neeme, Burton, and Fischl.

I was giggling like a schoolgirl when Jaman started posting again. I love his videos, and I probably have a small man-crush on him.

HEY! I resemble that remark!

Gonna have to watch Jaman, never seen him

He’s more produced than the others, but doesn’t describe his thought process in hands as much. Some of his play is odd to me. I get a little bored when he isn’t talking.
He doesn't go deep into his thought process like Neeme, but he does talk a lot about table conditions and his views/reads on other players. I also like the style of his videos, and I find him personally entertaining.

If you're looking for deep analysis, sure, go elsewhere. But for me it's 50% about the poker and 50% about just enjoying him as an entertainer.

Here we go!
