I take it you landed on "masks required?"
Opposite - since I'm hosting vaxxed players, wife and I discussed and we are not requiring masks.

It was pretty tough - last week one of our friends' kids, who is about by son's age, was hospitalized for a few days with MIS-C after a bout with Covid - which extended our discussion out a bit. Scary stuff. It's nice to be protected as an adult, and kids are lower risk, but it's still frightening to think of putting your kid in the hospital because you want to host poker.

While I don't think I would ask for this, it doesn't seem like an unreasonable request IF the rules changed in the middle of the season as far as what was required to play, etc.
I agree with you on both counts. But, I said in the email the championship is not for a few more months, and I'm only hosting vaxxed players 'at least for the first few games' and so the request is a little jump the gun in my opinion. I think he's pissed, but the way the original email was written it was really the only way he could express his pissed offedness in a reasonable way without saying something super tinfoil hat like.

Okay so you are excluding non-vaxxed players, so this guy has no intention of getting a vax and that is causing entanglement in a league you have yet to finish?

If my interpretation is right, well I get it, that's a tough spot. I think it's fair to cross that bridge like you said. And realistically, I would bet on there being enough vaccinations in the next 2 months where this won't be an issue. Minnesota is over 50% vaxxed already among eligible adults. I imagine we will get to 70% and level off.

But your house, your rules. That comes before any other considerations.

This statement indicates to me you are very good at reading people. I am going to be careful if I ever sit in a game with you :).

I negotiate mergers and acquisitions for a living, and spent a good twenty years before that as a leadership trainer, mediator, and executive coach. Lotta practice. :)

Yes, I am officially not coming to your game. Unless you bring in a lot of fishies :).

He may be able to read your soul live, but it’s very profitable to play against him online. Best part is, he thinks it’s variance. ;)

I honestly wonder what you mean by this.
I would be uncomfortable playing poker with people who are anti-vaccine, anti-mask, If I wasn’t vaccinated.
I would also be uncomfortable playing poker in a mask.
And as a host, I’d be uncomfortable opening my house to some friends but not others, much less asking to see their papers.
For perspective, I haven’t played live poker or eaten at a restaurant in over a year. I’ve taken this shit very seriously. But I think (I hope) that we’re close to that tipping point, where we no longer have to worry about the actions of others.
If I’m vaccinated and everybody I love is vaccinated, and enough of society is vaccinated that we don’t have to worry about hospitals collapsing, that’s the point where I stop caring about who’s vaccinated and who’s wearing a mask. I think.
Do you think that’s wrong?
This is a pretty good synopsis of how I feel about all of it. I'm high-risk and have a wife who depends on me, so basically everything had to stop when COVID hit. I go out for groceries and to pick up take-out, and that's about it.

I'm not hosting live games at the moment, but I have a friend who is. He has his own requirements, which IIRC include at least one dose of vaccine or negative COVID test (plus isolation) within 3 days, something like that. I don't believe he's requiring anyone to actually show vaccine cards or anything intrusive. It's a short list and we've all been friends for years.

My hard line is that both my wife and I get at least one dose before I'll consider playing live. And I say "consider" because I'm not really open to playing live with people I've seen throwing caution to the wind the whole past year, at least not until we hit that "no longer have to worry" point @upNdown mentions. In the meantime, I'm going to be extremely selective. Live gambling, and poker in particular, is one of the highest-risk activities for spreading COVID. It will (and should) be one of the last to get back to normal.

Even after that, I'm not sure about playing live in a public cardroom for the foreseeable future. Just too many unaccountable risk factors. If and when we get to the point where masks, plexiglass dividers, etc. are no longer in widespread use, I will think about it.

Well, I finally sent my email. Already got a snarky response from one of my anti-vax types that he wants his per game league prize pool contribution back if these rules are still in place when we have our championship (I'm doing our league tourneys online for the next couple of months still). I just told him we'd cross that bridge if and when we get there.

Sigh.
I, for one, am excited to get back to live poker with a responsible host and responsible players.

And I know how much effort it takes to host a game, both on the host and the family, and the fact that you do it with such panache makes me grateful to be invited. If I was an anti-vaxxer, I'd get vaccinated anyway just to be able to play at your game.

Such kind words! Ty.
