what cracks me up is that digital signal doesn't have loss or degradation like that. Additionally, I can buy copper or optical cable that has manufactured specs that are vastly in excess of the data rate you are getting even with 8k from any vendor, but sure, enjoy your special cables.

There will always be an analog component to the audio system, assuming you want to, yanno, hear it. And in my experience, the cabling matters a lot there. The value proposition isn’t there for me for silver, but I’m not about to look down my nose at those who go that route. After all, TRKs work as well as dice chips, right? “Enjoy your special chipes”.
 
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to wipe my ass with any speaker, unless it's some kind of futuristic bidet using sound waves or something.

Also this. I was going to say, that is my #1 marker whether I should take someone seriously about their audio interests or not. If they insist on magical 99.99999999% pure-copper diamond-encrusted gold-plated cables for carrying a digital signal, they're a complete idiot who should be ignored. Full stop.

Yes, cable quality absolutely matters -- for the analog section of the path. If you have a digital path from (I dunno) CD player to amp, cable quality basically does not matter. (I mean, you can't have a frayed broken piece of crap, but you won't need to do a double-blind test to hear the difference. It will either work, or there will be really really obvious problems, like audible dropouts.)

@Windwalker WOW that Oaks Card Club Santa Cruz!!!! Im from Santa Cruz and just did a deep dive to see if I could find any history on the Card Club. Nothing. Custom chip done by Oaks in Emeryville maybe? Does anyone have history of this chip/club?

So much snake oil in the audiophile community lol.

I was a music major who worked as a professional audio engineer in my 20s.

What I've found matters most in the sound of your audio is the sonic properties of the room in which it's being listened to.

Second are your speakers.

And if you're listening to any non-classical/folk/jazz recorded less than 15 years ago, it was recorded to be listened to on consumer audio in a compressed digital format.

Other things can have an effect (especially turntables/cartridges, amps, etc), but the emphasis on "audiophile" cables (vs sufficiently thick speaker wire) as a key element in the signal chain is nutso.

I'll give $10k for 8oz of that snake oil... do I pour it right into the amp or coat the cables with it to reduce skin effect?

Record collecting and audio is one of my many other hobbies. Built this system over the past few years which is serving me well until I’m a doctor and can buy my dream system. I agree that most of the digital stuff is snake oil, but a good pair of speakers, turntable, cartridge, tube preamp, and amp with some analog-recorded music while doing some chip cleaning or oiling is heaven.

(The little soundbar is just for Netflix and not part of the 2 channel stereo system)

Oh no...no no no
We all know you have to vaporise the snake oil combined with baby unicorn's tears, about 730 mm away from the power button when wind is blowing East-West
