I’ve always had a fascination with them after watching some James Bond movies back in the day, culminating with Casino Royale. I bought a few back in the early/mid 2000’s when I was into playing holdem, but got rid of them along with all my other poker stuff. Now I’m into craps, and have a small table, and obviously craps doesn’t use them or have any way to accommodate them on the chip rail, but after joining this forum and looking at what everyone has, I’m feeling the urge. I saw there are cases just for plaques, and now I want it so bad! I have zero use for them, but I’m trying to talk myself into them. How does one stop the madness? Or should I just embrace it?

Embrace it!!! If you like them find a way to use them. I have wanted to have a plaque in a set for a long time too but couldn’t find where to use one that made sense and would get used, not just looked at. I recently decided to make a custom limit set and use a plaque as the value holder.

finally a way to use a plaque that makes sense and will get used!

My very first "chips" as a teenager were cheap rectangular plastic ones.
Round poker chips were always considered "American", that is exotic, and most desirable :D
This may have left me with an atavistic dislike for anything rectangular, as poker token, but, rationally, I do respect nice plaques.
A brilliant example is the ones recently made by @Rhodeman77 :)

Not only a plaque, but a truly amazing one at that brother!!

We also love plaques... why not embrace it?? @FordPickup92 was building her PCA secondary set when some PCA $20 plaques became avalible to us... she wasn't really a fan at the time, but I convinced her this would really compliment the set well and give it that slightly different aspect than other cash sets have... everytime we play the set and try to put her minty $25 chips in play, people will say "could I please have the plaques instead!"

If it fits the set and makes sense for the denoms you get them in... why not?

I'm totally into craps too, so I feel the pain.

There are some relatively easy to get plaques that are kinda universal like the dollar bill ones:

They can kinda go into any set.

MSK plaques are cheaper than Matsui plaques clearly. How bad is the damage? I think I saw Matuis for 20 a plaque lately?

Anyone else of note?

Yeah, I was looking at those. I just wish there were side views available for the majestic and horseshoe plaques.

This help?

I will give a big recommendation for MSK customer service. They have responded to all of my emails quickly and had my prototype made fast and pics sent. They have been very easy to work with and are very reasonably priced! The biggest cost is the shipping. About $100, but it is worth it so that they aren’t on a slow boat for 3 months.

@coolguy101 please forgive the threadjacking, let me know and I'll remove the post, but I figured you'd be interested too.

I obviously have some MSK produced plaques, which are very nice, but am interested in seeing the quality, or other tangibles, difference to Matsui or even Abiatta/B&G without trying to get a sample set from those manufacturers(when they even sell to the public). I wanted to just buy a single plaque/jeton on eBay made by Matsui or someone else but I am unsure who makes what. eBay listings don't say who makes the plaques and it isn't like 'look for the THC'.

Can someone who knows their way around plaques point out a few things to look for or even a few listings that you know come from certain manufacturers?

Thanks,
Dave

I'm pretty sure the first series of Casino Royal replica plaques (note the missing "e") were made by Matsui. I think Apache has some for sale.

The Canadian MSK group buy ranged from $5.64 a plaque to $9.40 a plaque, depending on size and amount (MSK has some unusual "break-even" points on pricing). It's well below Matsui prices, but the two aren't comparable for quality. Matsui >>> MSK >>>>>> Ceramics.

A good way to tell is that Matsui plaques are completely flat and plastic, MSK plaques have a ridge around the edges, and B&G/Abbiati both can have lunettes (small partially transparent circles in the plaque) real gold filament, and they always have ridges which have small breathing holes at the four corners. The only way to distinguish between Abbiati/BG is if they both have gold filament, then you can tell because BG’s gold filament is closer together, whereas Abbiati’s is wider.

I got into plaques (and poker) after watching the TV series Return of the Saint. Bought some cheap plaques years ago but just kept on buying them even though I never play for the amounts shown on any plaque I have ever owned.
Ceramics are relatively cheap but, like most chip collectors, you'll probably just buy more expensive ones over time.

I acquired plaques made by MSK, Matsui and Abbiata as well as ceramics and I've got one on the way from Sunfly. The Plastic ones are obviously much nicer than the ceramics, and the MSKs are nice, but the Abbiatas have a much nicer surface. The Matsuis however blow them all away so I understand the premium.

All of that being said, I'm not sure the Matsuis are worth the 2.5x premium they run.

Either way, I'll be on the lookout for any plaque GBs in the future that fit into any sets I own.

Abbiati plaques are just ok by themselves, but with gold filament and real lunettes, they blast away matsui plaques, IMO.

My recent group buy the plaques came out to $14-15 each for the 95x66. Including artwork fees and shipping.
