I'll be honest, I've lost interest almost completely since they got moved to their own section and they are not in my face anymore. And I am okay with that; they don't mesh well with my occasional compulsivity when it comes to this site.

Not speaking for anyone else here. Just from my own experience this is a TERRIBLE TIME to hold an auction (for me anyway). This site has had quite a few group buys going on this past 6 months, and mixing that with my "on again off again on again off again" employment status courtesy of the virus and I have been spending WAY more on here than I should be, and I haven't even gotten into the auctions yet. Just not a good time for this man. Now while I know these are just my experiences, I seriously doubt I am the only one in this boat here.
I think it's far more a combination of content and covid-based $$ uncertainty and related circumstances, and much less to do with auctions having moved into their own area.
Just post an auction for a couple mint racks of Four Queens $1 quarterpies or a playable ACF set and watch the action. Highly sought-after items will always generate interest and participation.

Auction price is per definition market value
Does one auction or sale actually set the market value? I've seen people overpay for a rack because it finished their set. Once they are done it doesn't necessarily mean the next person will pay that much.....
I wonder how many deep pocket chip buyers we have on this site, if they stopped buying would prices go down? Maybe there are enough now that there will always be someone willing to step in and pay a huge amount for chips.
I would say for me personally that the chips I'm looking for has narrowed in scope over the years. I'm usually only looking for a smaller specific area of chips that frankly aren't what is being offered in auctions (older chips, usually not Paulsons or TRK's that aren't in demand as much these days). Mostly what shows up in auctions is the shiny object of the week type of chips that are not the type of stuff I'm after anymore.
But if something I'm after comes up for auction I'll be in the mix, just doesn't happen that often anymore.
And yes, my default page is "new posts" on any forum so the auctions show up just like everything else.

I disagree -- it's actually only the market value to one person (which sounds oxymoronic), unless the results are repeatable.
Multiple auctions can help shape overall market values, but single auctions do not set specific market values. There is a large yet subtle difference.
I understand Dave...but 10 made sales for rack X does not guarantee a fix sales price (hence market value...the price a buyer wants to pay for an item on certain moment.
Chips are all items with limited availability (at least the ones we can't buy direct from manufacturer) & volatile market ...so I can value my collection of chips/set based on current market prices. But if I don't find a buyer when I want to sell them, they are not worth that...too much variables to talk about a steady market value.
But one can define market value based on a collection of sales...or the most recent one on auction (like most art & collectables are valued, for a part at least)
Exactly. But a single sale or auction -- by itself -- can be misleading or even erroneous if attempting to use it to single-handedly determine the market value.
In pcf context I actually think an auction is far less useful to judge market value.
For the most part it's either too high, because a couple of whales overbid, or maybe too low, if there aren't enough interested parties at the time the auction occurs.
How long it takes for an item to get either snapped up, or sit before being sold is usually a clearer indicator in my mind.

To those of you wondering why people can't see the auctions... on mobile devices many of us use the lightning bolt for new posts which include auctions. Those that use tablets or computers do not get the lightning bolt... why I have no clue? I use both and it is extremely annoying!!
This is why you don't see them like the rest of us!
2nd @SpaceMonkey420 If you look back I bid on those chips for $1,000... that set runs about $2.50 - $3 a chip and was started at $2 a chip (some of the denoms sell cheaper but average, I consider that set mint an unplayed for $2 a chip a steal!!) That's more than fair for a starting price and I was willing to pay more! I did have a bid on those, or at least I thought I did... it was cancelled due to lack of intrest and a couple people asked... didn't you have a bid on those??? I thought so too but oh well! Happy with the Burbons I bought today at a more than fair price!
@upNdown your first post in this thread was perfect sir!! Other than rare chips or charity auctions. Everything else man, I'm on the sell them for what you have in them team, or at least fair market value!
Including twice this week I have sold for less than I had invested, not huge sets and more than happy to help fellow chippers in a pinch!! Pay it forward people, it will come back to you in the long run!!

Can't say I noticed the lightning bolt on mobile before this post. I use the "New Posts" link almost exclusively to see posts on PCF on the PC, phone (via the menu on the left-hand side), and on my tablet. Auctions appear along with all other new posts.
You don't have this on your device?
Only in a very specific market, which in this case is those who are aware of the auction.

Ya he did something very similar to me. I had been warned. I didn’t listen. All good he ignores me and it makes it easier. I don’t have any biz arguing about Larry or with him I hope I’m half as sharp as him when I hit that age. On a side note Hopefully the auctions pick up. I like them more then living in here yelling dibs. I also strongly believe if u start a auction at $1 and give it a few days and tag people it will get to $2 a chip if that’s what it is worth. Take away the reserve prices. I wonder of that would help drive excitement drama and passion? I personally don’t need a reserve. Let’s ditch it.
