So, if I wanted to buy a JEEP, what do I need to know?

I know there are a few Jeep-freaks on here (meant only as a positive!). I'm thinking about buying a Jeep. The intended purpose is NOT to look pretty on the freeway. I want to take it off-road, on the fire roads and a little beyond that, in the mountains around my cabin. Nothing that is going to threaten my life, but... I want a Jeep that is going to get dirty!

What do I need to know?

I'd love to hear your words of wisdom!

First question. Budget? Lol

Honestly just about any Wrangler will fit the bill. Jeeps are plenty capable stock without modification.... but be warned. Upgrading your Jeep is an even deeper bottomless pit than chipping lol.

All I know is you have to wave to other Jeep drivers so get ready for a lot of that.
Also this.

While unique and kinda cool. These don't fit your description Mel. Stick to Wranglers. Or if you like old school then you can branch out into cherokees as well.

Do they only do this on renegades? I thought it was on wranglers too? But then again, I don’t have a jeep

My son can attest to this. Jeepology stickers are on the back!

JEEP: Just Empty Every Pocket
(if you plan to go off-roading, learn to do the repairs yourself)

If you are one to dig the old school look I am a HUGE fan of the Cherokee. Bang for your buck is off the charts and these things will literally run til the end of time. Might leak a little oil on the way there, but they just don't ever die.

Here's my baby. Grown a bit since these photos, but in hindsight I wish I stopped here

Get a new JL, they are very much improved over the JKs.

How big of tires do you wanna go? That can make the difference between a Sport, Sahara or Rubicon.

Soft top, hard top or dual top? Soft top only for me all day long.

It's been raining so much I haven't been able to take Lucille out a lot. Today was hot so got our for some fun.

Also this. Highly recommend the newer JL over the JK. My buddy has one and it's great. Super nice ride inside too

Photos encouraged!

I was definitely thinking Wrangler. Soft top, doors optional.

Budget? If you don't want to go new then I highly suggest a TJ (1997 to 2006) Wrangler.

One of my favorites

I don't have a budget yet. Just starting to gather information. I could definitely see buying a used one, if that isn't a terrible idea. That one ^^ looks awesome!

Not terrible at all. If you buy a 97-06 wrangler just make sure it has the 4.0l. Same engine as the cherokee. Will last you a lifetime and plenty of torque for the mountain trails.

I have always been a fanatic follower of the exact opposite end of the spectrum of auto-motion, namely low-sitting sports cars, bred for racetrack tarmac. I considered all Jeep-oids as moving kiosques (stalls/booths).:D
Now, getting older, I might consider something sitting higher (not too much higher, though).

A funny story: My late father was, as a soldier, the clerk and driver of a brigadier general, back in 1952. When the Jeep broke down, both my father AND the Jeep got a 10-day imprisonment penalty.

Mel - budget is key for this question.
Really high budget...get a JL Wrangler (2018-present day) Rubicon with the new diesel option, put it on 35" tires...and have fun. When it's old enough too bash against stuff, do a second build, get it on 40s, and terrorize the serious rock crawling trails.
Low budget...get a TJ (97-06) and just bury it in the mud. They are quite fun, and the 4.0 inline six that came with most of them is damn bulletproof.

I have a barely more than stock JK (2007-2017), and have yet to do any serious offroad...because it is my wife's daily driver. But I can dream!
