Imo the Truman's and chicken chips are truly custom.
I think the btps get closer to that, because of the inlay and then for me the boat chips don't quite hit that category, because I assume the inlays were designed to be generic enough to pass as a real boat casino inlay.
No judgement on any of the sets as I love them all. I don't think any of them should be excluded from consideration, because they are still a custom design, but for me the truly great custom sets (regardless of manufacturer) are great because of a combination of chip and inlay design.
For that reason the boat chips in my mind don't match up to a lot of the HoF custom sets, at least from a design perspective, regardless of whether I'd sacrifice my left nut to own a set.
Frustratingly I expect they'd get a lot of votes purely for the fact that they are paulson, which is a clearly superior chip to CPC for example. But then that's not really the point of the HoF.

Agreed, if we are equating superiority to quality. I would say a lot is dependent on which molds we‘re talking about. Would I rather handle a stack of mint RHC or mint Jockey Mold CPCs? Tough to say.
Personally, I like the milled finish on mint Paulsons, but that’s a preference and has little to do with quality.
Rather than saying “superior” perhaps the noteworthy difference is the “rarity” or “unattainable” nature of truly custom (not talking about simply inlay-replaced) Paulsons that makes them so desired. That’s why, imo, the NAGB chips are so special - they’ve achieved something that until now is only attainable through CPC or in being a fully licensed casino: full customization.
At the end of the day though, a great chip is a great chip is a great chip. Design and execution matters.
One of the things that makes me disagree with you is the selection of colors. CPC has gotten better, but they can't compare to what Paulson has when it comes to vibrant colors.

That wasn't meant as a knock on CPC and I absolutely love my set. I've owned two more in the past and I'm about to order another set. So I'm a big fan of CPC.
But, the colours are a long way off what Paulson produces and there aren't as many. They are quite a bit lighter. It's still an absolutely top notch product, but they aren't quite the gold standard.

Like 'em or not, the Empress Star, Aurora Star, Pacific Star, Big Top Poker, and Sunset Beach sets are all customs -- all ordered directly from the factory and manufactured per customer supplied specifications, and otherwise not available except in subsequent person-to-person private sales.

This is actually a fair point. That said, unless Paulson starts making custom chips for all of us, then CPC remains the next best option. A bright yellow, amongst other colours, would be a welcome addition to the CPC palette though.

"Custom" to me means something created for one particular customer, and only for that customer's use. Now what if that "one" customer is a group of friends that get together and have a product custom made just for them? Kind of the same thing, but the problem then grows to where do you snap the line to distinguish between a small group getting something for themselves - to a not so small group that ends up getting thousands of custom products made, or one person/vendor who has a "custom" design commissioned for distribution. Should a set like the DDLM chips be considered? They were originally designed for a particular person, but then picked up by a vendor to be distributed, largely for this community. You see how fast it can spiral - should we include them all? IMHO all the group buy chips - AS, PS, ES, BTP, SB, DDLM (and older ones like Black Sands) - are all very well designed for their intended use - mass appeal for the group of people buying them. I just don't feel that's what the HOF is about, so that's why I would lean towards saying that no "group buy" chips should be considered. The custom Paulson sets made particularly for individuals only - like Harley's pooping parrot set, are fine in my book to be considered.Almost all of the sets currently in the HOF are exactly this - sets designed for one person. The lone exception (I think, not sure) are the Capital Room chips, IIRC these were a small group buy from the chip talk days.

They were also collaborative efforts. Before you say "wait what about the Sunset Beach chips" the design was modified from someone else's attempt at a Paulson custom set that was to go in round two. They were also all intended to be for group purchases, not for an individual. And while this has no bearing on whether or not they are customs, I'm pretty sure I've seen all three GBs available for sale publicly in the Classified section of this forum.

I usually don't weigh in on highly opinionated matters on the forum, but I think this is actually straight forward: A set of written rules would clear up any confusion.
I believe that The Capital Room has opened a precedence for a set to be bought for multiple individuals.
All of these Paulson chips are customized/custom color/edge spot selected chips, ie custom chips.
What is the argument against the chips?
Do any of the above points violate a qualification rule? If so, then sure.
If not, then having a set qualify and having a set have merit to be HOF-worthy are two separate points, and just don't vote for it.

- Or number of chips produced?
- Or number of samples allowed in the wild?
- Are you violating a rule by selling the set?

The easiest way to determine if Paulson sets should be in is to let the people vote on them. If enough people feel they should be in they will get the votes.

If/when BTPs come up, I’ll be beating that drum (no ooc). I don’t care if they were Paulsons, CPC, or thin mints, they literally somehow made playing even more fun. When I own a set one day, it’ll be difficult getting other sets into play.

Some of the very best custom chips ever made -- including some of those already in the HoF -- were collaborative efforts. Not sure how that has any impact on their 'worthiness' to be included.
Sure. And they were all person-to-person private sales, i.e., not purchased publicly from a manufacturer or distributor.
I think this is a fair point. Otherwise, are we discounting anyone who's ever employed the services of a designer like J5, Toby, etc to help bring their inlay creations to life? I think the list starts to get pretty short if so.
Or merely asked for opinions, feedback, or assistance, either privately or in a design thread. Collaboration has no bearing on whether or not a set should be considered 'custom'.

Theres a difference between one person floating ideas off of people for feedback versus multiple people designing chips, or one person designing a set but beholden to what others in the group want.

To many folks the execution of the inlay is what makes a set a consideration, then the chip colors...that will drive any successful vote for any set IMO.
