I'm just going to ask: Does anyone actually run a game with ridiculously low stakes, like 1c/2c? I really don't see much point in it. My cash sets are:

Dia De Los Muertos (5 cents, games are .05/.10)
GPI Monaco (5 cents, games are .05/.10)
Wicked Spades (25 cents, games are .25/.25)
Riverside/Riverdale casino (25 cents, games are .25/.25)
Lady Luck Casino (50 cents, haven't determined this play yet)

I don't know about you but it seems like people would be just carrying around pennies needlessly for a poker game for this. I'm asking because a video came up from Hobbyphilic (a guy I tend to disagree with fairly often) and he brought up that people do 1c/2c or 1c/3c games, and the first thing I was thinking was "is this really necessary?". Even nickels are different stories but spending 80c on a chip that is worth a penny seems kinda odd to me. Maybe I'm missing something, but if so, what?

As a side note, I should unsubscribe from him. He tended to fawn over the Milanos, a chip that is very pumice quality and the Tiki Kings which although the quality is good, I've had a hard time getting into those. Probably because my mom hated those chips. She openly said "I don't like them. They're too cartoony and like something a 5-year old would use".

1c/2c games let me teach poker to both my kids ten years ago - trust me any stakes can be good with the right players for that stake

I hosted $0.01 / $0.02, $2 buy in games for the boys in my Scout troop. It was a fine line, because some of the parents were more than a little crazy. But two bucks was the cost of a soda and seemed more acceptable.

We had a great time. eleven year old boys are rarely thoughtful card players . But they are enthusiastic! And let me say taking a dollar from one of the adults was worth FAR more than a hundred pennies.

A fun time was had by all. The kids loved to play and the dads (and a rare mom or two) got to spend a couple of hours of quality time with their kid.

I'd say we were all winners -=- DrStrange

PS by the time the guys got to be old enough for high adventure, they would carry chips and cards into the wilderness. The ultra cheap interlocking chips were perfect for this sort of trip. no one wants to be the guy lugging a 20 lb chip case up the mountain and I wouldn't want to wonder if my chips were going to make it back. We got more than a few fishy eyed looks from the camp staff. But then, they would play with us one night and decide it was a pretty good use of space/weight in a backpack.

See, I'd be diabolical because once bitten, twice shy. My kids would know by the age of 7 how to play poker. But then again if the kids were that age, you'd probably be okay using bicycle chips or at best dice chips with them. It would sadden me to think I had to go back to those.

I had to learn the hard way when my brother played a game of poker with me when he was 9 and I was 6, and he would cheat to win. I had him beat, a flush to his two pair, but he was hell-bent on winning and told me I had "crap", to which I told him there was a term for a hand where all five cards were the same suit, of course he responded with "it's called crap". Not knowing the term, and not having any poker books around, I ended up sneaking the following day into my other brother's room where he had an instruction manual on poker and blackjack, and I made sure that never happened again :)

My kid would probably come home in the Scoutmaster's car and tip him a 20 for driving him/her home in the kid's new car that he won at the tables =)

1) A person can carry around nickels as easily as pennies. Three of us once got a $1/$1 game going by changing a couple of twenties in for ones at a bar. We had a deck of cards, but no chips.

2) Playing with .05/.10 blinds seems absurd to me and would bore me to death, but everybody needs to start somewhere. For me, it was $10 NLHE tournaments that quickly evolved into a .25/.50, $20 buy-in NLHE cash game.

Maybe what you are missing is the possibility that Hobbyphilic chose to use .01/.02 as an example in his video because he knew that would not make others feel small about their games.

Here's what I reckon.

$.05/.10 games are the for fun games, they're low stakes, not a lot of loss or risk. It could evolve to a bigger amount but erring on the side of caution isn't a bad thing.

$.25/$.50 games are much higher risk, You tend to see more action and more chances taken with a $.25/$.25 game

My sister-in-law ran a $.50/$1 game with a $25 buy-in. That led to people not being sure unless they had really killer hands.

My broader point is everyone defines the value of fun differently. $25 does not provide enough incentive for some to even bother playing.

I sat at a $2/$5 table last year where you couldn't see a flop for less than $25, not because they had killer hands, but because $2/$5 was dull to them and the casino wouldn't open up a NLHE table with higher stakes.

I have seen players blow a couple of thousand dollars and get up from the table like they won two grand. They had fun. Others who lose that kind of money might think about jumping off a bridge.

I'm poor. I kid you not, I at one point in time had $3 that I could spend, on my last spin I won $32. I'm not kidding, I watched my cash total going up 2 cents at a time, and it went up to like $32 and I said "Nope, I'm done".

All my stakes have chips or plaques up to $100, but I figure we'll probably only get to the point where we wonder if we'll ever use them. Plus black chips are cool looking.

I can't tell if this is legit or not.

I wish I could make that up. I bought a sample set and was like "okay, I see what ABC is going for here", but Mom saw them and was so against it I had to promise her I wouldn't buy the Tiki Kings. I was only 50/50 on buying the Tiki Kings anyways, but my mother's incessant whining kinda pushed it into the negative column, plus I could get Wicked Spades for the same price.

Before she died, my mother was overbearing, manipulative and somewhat psychotic. She would sit at a TV screen and watch the same episode of Judge Judy or Mike and Molly multiple times in a row and if anyone said anything she would holler at them. So yes, I am very serious.

I absolutely love this series!!! Man $.80 per chip would be awesome for those lower denoms... saddly the pennies are over $10 each! Around $6 each for the spotted nickles and Dimes. The solid nickels are $12 - $15 or more each...

Awesome thread @SteveHNo96! All I can say is, I don't care the stakes if it brings my family and friends together for a great time and get to play some poker... it's a win/win!! The best poker memories I have were spent sitting at the dining room table with my family for hours and hours every weekend until the sun would come up... and we never played for even a dime!! Every chip I purchase, every set I build I am chasing those amazing memories and hoping the day will come that somehow even with the loss of my amazing grandfather that we can find some how find that magic again... saddly I know it is gone forever, but every single game we play in today's time, memories of those days are brought up! I know my Pop-pop is watching down over us and smiling rather we are playing for nickles or a $10 tourney!

I actually prefer playing low stakes so we can invite others I to our game, I have a 13 year old cousin who has told her mother that she knows she is gay, I obviously accept her with open arms and will support her no matter what!! She has become very introvert In her personal life and has a shell that is very tough to crack!! It is common for her to come over, maybe say hi and then run off and hide on her tablet... we decided on new years to let her play in our $10 buy in tourney. She didn't know what a pair or a straight meant earlier that day, but as my family always does and with all of her kindness @FordPickup92 gave her a quick crash course! We played 3 tourneys that night finishing around 8:30 am, she was still bright eyed and busy tailed!!! No she didn't cash a single time, we all took turns buying her in, but to see her open up, talk trash and truly show who she had been hiding was one of my favorite poker experiences in many years!!! She has not stopped asking her parents when the next game will be, and that she can't wait!! Did I mention while the chip set used was over $1,000 in cost (Mardi Gras V2s) I don't think $200 total was spent over the table for the entire evening!!

Sorry for the long post but hope you take the time to read that one! I definitely had tears in my eyes sharing that last story!

I probably have $1,800 in this set!! Don't even care!! I know that it's going to be loved and enjoyed by my family and friends!!

Doesn't matter to me if not a single one of those beautiful purple, or yellow chips ever hit the felt!!! As long as they make the drive and we can all make new and wonderful memories together, in a family that has been falling by the way side for many years after the passing of both of my grand parents. Then I don't know a better feeling as a chip owner!

Also would like to say with out being accused of brown nosing... @DrStrange I have yet to find a post of yours that I don't find insightful, extremely knowledgeable or just flat out an enjoyable story!! You truly are a Class Act and I thank you for the time you give to help keep this community strong!!!

In closing, I guess poker is different for everyone!! I thank each and every one of you that play micro stakes and keep on teaching the game to the younger generations which helps keep our hobby alive and thriving even in a new world where electronics and virtual reality is the new norm.

As usual i apologize for the book, and terrible grammar, but probably my heaviest post to date on PCF.

You're right to a fault, specifically that friendships and all that can come out of the most unusual places. When I came back to California in 2018, everyone I knew and wanted to deal with me was either dead or moved away, but on Wednesday I would go to the Tilted Kilt for some boneless wings. When I first went there was a girl there named Tristan and Tristan was extremely distant and cold. When you're a waitress, I figure you had to do something to deserve that, right? Turns out she's actually vibrant and fun, you just had to get her out of her shell. It's nice to see someone who normally is distant warm up to you. :)

I know coming here has turned me into a major chip snob, but have you ever thought about semi-custom or full custom ceramics? I know for some people it's Paulson or nothing, but spending $10 for a 1c chip seems a bit excessive when you can either get bitchin' designs or design your own for about 80c a chip, and those things are durable and last, or go with Sunfly Hybrids? I just thought it was weird to have a poker chip worth 1 penny and spend so much on it. Most of the stock designs don't even go lower than a quarter, and I've seen a few stock designs worth a nickel like the Pharaoh's but I've honestly never seen a 1 cent chip until now. That's crazy man.

That is exactly the reason I spend the money on these! Chips are art to me, it hit me one day out of the blue talking about the cost of making chips vs. Face value... why do hot stamp fracs seem to run $2 -$3 each... it didn't cost nearly that amount to harvest them... but, the fact of the matter is, most casinos back then didn't make that many fracs, many went with plastic chips for around $.30 - $.40 each while some still decided to go with Paulson... some even paid for leaded fracs!! Man wouldn't it be crazy if some casino made a nickle or even a penny??? Boom I started my journey for Artichoke Joes!!

Basic supply and demand. While most of these casinos while ordering 20,000 $1 and $5 chips may have ordered (1000) fracs. Many people over the years enjoy taking home a keep sake... why keep a dollar when you can keep a quarter... over time those casinos run out of those costly fracs... keeping a $1 chip they aren't loosing much if anything, definitely making money when you poket a $5 spot... but paying nearly $1 and only getting $.25 when it walks is just bad... so many went with cheaper plastic chips and over time most have stopped using fracs all together.

Many desirable old school hot stamp paulson frac racks are built a chip at a time... shipping costs a fortune, many one of a kind frac racks could easily have $500 In building it... not to mention the time and dedication.

@FordPickup92 and I have a beautiful set of Ceramic Scrub Donkey chips on the way, but that's not for everyone... why $25 for a single PCA $500 chip... why $12 a chip for BTPs. I have said it many times... if we all liked the same things this would be a boring freaking hobby!! Some are straight up old school TRK fans with many chips costing over $20 a chip, like my awesome buddies @Lil Tuna, @Seeking Alpha Social Club, @liftapint just to name a few! Love you guys!!

The fact that someone was willing to spend the money not only to produce a 1 cent paulson chip it also extra for edge spots, amait's amazing! Its artwork, its dedication to the sport/hobby, it's pure insanity and exactly why I find them amazing and do not regret a single purchase... believe me when I say there are several of us on here actively serching for these chips!!

The conversation value... even in this tread alone makes them.all the more worth it to me! Feel free to stop in and check them.out sometime... if any of that blabber makes sense and you change your mind and decide you would like to collect some... good luck!! they are very difficult to get your hands on even for the prices listed above.

I hope you find all the chips that make you happy and content, that they serve your needs to a T!! Some of us are proud scrub donkeys and invest thousands of dollars in little round pieces of clay... doesn't mean it's right for everyone, I personally know many who are totally happy with Dice chips and don't understand why even custom ceramics are necessary.

As usual where a simple response was probably enough... I go an write another book.... uggh I hope I made some kind of a point in all of that! Lmao

Here's kinda what I figure:

Paulsons: Sweet chips. Clearly awesome. Hard time getting fracs at all unless you hit the jackpot and get one out of a casino say in Missouri where state law required that. Pricey as hell. This is why I want to stop after doing my tournament set because quite honestly, I can't afford to spend a ton of money on poker chips. I lucked out that I got a huge disability settlement, but I'm not going to blow ALL that money on 1.5" pieces of clay.

I can't even imagine having to wash my hands after handling poker chips like the Paulsons had back in the day. I'm glad the set I got was a 2008, when lead levels were reduced to under 0.005%.

Ceramic hybrids: Now I don't own any of these but I gotta admit I'm curious because they've come highly recommended, some say even more valuable than the RHC's on a per-dollar basis. I'm going to see the quality of the chip because I got a sample set of some of the designs here.

Ceramics (what I call pro quality): I know chipco ran into problems with the casino users using them day and night and the chips wearing down, and that's all well and good but home game sets will never see that level of abuse. I actually like how much you can customize them and the prices are high but at least they're manageable. With the sale I got 540 43mm ceramics plus plaques for $550. Not terrible. If I had stuck with the 39s, I would have saved about $120 but I wanted to see what all the buzz was about. Also my Wicked Spades 39's have garnered massive praise among the younger people I talk to, I don't see why the DDLM's wouldn't do the same. I have a friend in Texas who openly said she never thought poker chips would look as cool as the Wicked Spades did. The only people that I see that don't like them are older people who claim they can't read the denominations. Well, who do I want to listen to? A 20 year old girl who says they rule or a 55 year old woman complaining about the denominations? :p

China Clays (I call these mid-quality) are the lowest quality chip I would consider. They're a good value for a set, obviously, and I can see where the texture is similar to that of a Paulson but I'm also seeing labels come off, I'm seeing chips prone to breaking (especially the dreaded Milano chips) and I'm seeing where they emit an odor that some people just can't get rid of. These are all negatives to a positive of saving $150+ on a set of 500 chips.

Dice chips (I call these home quality), I'm actually getting to the point where I can't find a dice chip that impresses me at all anymore. The only one that ever did once I started coming here was the Nexgen Pro and tbh, they don't do much for me anymore. Whenever I see a dice chip, to me it's like seeing a naked man. I just turn away and go "Bad visual!" Basically all the ones that say "14 gram", "15 gram" "metal slug" or "coin inlay" all fall into this category. I just don't like them. No way, no how, no sir.

Bicycle store chips (I call these store quality), I had a set of these when I was a kid, and tbh, I only bought them because I was dirt poor and wanted to play some poker. That's literally it. I was young and dumb and didn't care, just wanted to play cards. Actually you could say that about the dice chips too because I won a set like 15 years ago and tbh, if I looked at it now I'd be like "why did I pick this?", and the reason is because I didn't know of better chips and I wanted the socialization of poker.

Damn it man!!! I can't hit the Haha and love button at the same time!! Left a few out but I think we can figure out where they fall in your spectrum... also I agree on most of those other than the 43mm CC that Apache put out... those honestly are some damn nice chips, it a huge fan of Milanos or Magestics, we have some other China clay that is ok... but Brie and I are both huge BCC fans of the Mardi Gras V2s
20200318_144932.jpg

and I have begun to fall down the dark and bottomless pit of truly becoming obsessed with old school TRKs
20200223_203947.jpg

Definitely Can't afford a ton of them.right now, pretty damn happy with what I have put together so far thought!!

Also I'm guessing somewhere towards the top of your list would be CPC, we were recently lucky enough to buy the entire series of the Silver tounged Devils and also many of our local PCF members run CPCs as well... truly fantastic chips!!
20200305_162149.jpg

Recently I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with @MegaTon44 new Mad duck 43mm sunfly hybrid chips and they were really nice too!! A bit on the plastic side for a clay guy but really nice size and feel... they seem extremely durable, like they will easily hold up for many many years of service!

I guess at the end of the day we have tons of options, and damn it man it makes this hobby entertaining!!

Fellow chipper Ben

Way back in the day we used play some 1c/2c and 2c/5c. Pretty simple operation - just use $1 chips as 1c, $5 as 5c, etc. etc. I agree with OP that it would be silly to actually buy/customize chips to actually have the 1c denom. But I guess that's just me.

Really? Unless you plan on grinding leaded paulsons over your food, like parmesean at the italian restaurant, you probably don't need to worry about it. Think about it this way - how many older poker pros, who have been shuffling leaded chips all their lives, have had problems with lead.
