Just got back from busting out of a local tourney. Details:
21 players 7X3 tables
buy in/ rebuy/ add on = 50/50/25
T5000 - 50BB

Blinds
1-50/100
2- 100/200
3- 150/300
4- 200/400
break ADD ON T2500 = $25 about 4 BB
5- 300/600
don't know after that

There wasn't posted schedule and he was running Blindsup.

When I saw the opening blinds I knew I would not be buying in again unless it was still round 1. Didn't get great cards. was doing ok, Ran into a rivered full house to cripple me. Then tripled up with QQ that held. Busto when my AKss loses to rivered Q against AQo. Maybe 10 total rebuys before this point with 5 at my table.

Round 1 rebuy = 50BB
Round 2 = 25BB
Round 3 = 16.67BB
Round 4 = 12.5BB
add on = 4BB

So I go out in round 4 - just 12 BB for a rebuy
My friend who busted me was kind of surprised when I stood up. "No rebuy?"...me "Not for 12 BB"

He said it was about a 4 hour tournament so I guess the schedule slowed down a bunch after the break.

So back to the question. In terms on BBs when is getting back in or topping off NOT a good idea.

I like 16 BB at a minimum, though in my game I allow rebuys all the way down to 13.2 BB, because of how the breaks fall. However, in a short stacked game in good company, I could be coaxed into a 12 BB rebuy - it would depend on the size of the other stacks at the table.

I never re-buy less than 20BB (unless one doesn't need to be busted to re-buy). 10BB add-on okay depending on price and current stack size compared to leaders.

So in the OP's event, I'm not re-buying after L1 (or pretty early in L2), and never adding on.

Really hate the format; a short-stacked 50BB tourney that quickly turns into a 25BB shovefest/luckfest in L2. Dunno how that structure ever gets to 4 hours, unless the players are all really horrible nits. Not sure this is a game I'd play even if it were the only one in town.

Concur 100%

It was the first one for me at this house. He played my game the week before and we had a very relaxed blinds set up to reward play not luck. I figured he would do the same. I showed him Blindsup and he liked it. I think he started with 50/100 because he is ultra low in T25 chips. I only had 4 in my stack and we were asked to share and make change quite a bit. It was all good, he is a good host, but the blinds sucked. I was talking about this with my friend who was sitting to my right. He asked what I thought about the blinds before break. I told him I was playing tight and if I busted after round 2 I was going home. I know the guys around me were listening and I was hoping for a big hand (got it) to get back in the game. I figured I needed to double up a couple times before the break as the other tables had a slew of rebuys. No difference between just missing the cash and finishing last. So I finished last but I feel better about only losing 50 instead of getting suckered into a a few bad rebuys. The 4BB add-on is just silly.

I was short stacked with 8BB when I pushed QQ preflop OOP. I got three callers and the QQ held up. Two hands later I did the same with AKss. My friend called it and hit his three outer to send me home. The only reason I pushed then was I had made the decision to get a big stack then or go home. I hope my friend did really well.

Our league game has a much slower blind schedule. I still rarely rebuy after the first level or two. Go home (or sit in a cash game if its starting soon :) )

Trying to take 21 players down in 4 hours is always going to be tough. At some point luck is going to be prevalent. I just don't think the beginning of the tourney is the right time.

Without a rake, there's no downside to re-buying even 4BBs! Your equity would still be break-even, assuming no skill advantage.

To answer your question, we would need to know the rake and what you thought your skill advantage was.

Also agree 100%

My tournaments give players a 250BB stack and allows rebuys up to the fourth level giving them a stack of about 75BB. The optional add-on is always 20BB. For my game it's just about juicing the pot.

FWIW, I think it's always a good idea to add-on, even if you're a 4:1 chip leader. The exception being the game mentioned in OP. I really don't like that format even a little bit.
