I keep coming up with silly ideas. This is one of them:

All players start with the same chip stack and blinds increase every 45 minutes until Level 5, where they are capped. From that point, blinds stay fixed. Players may rebuy only after losing all of their chips, and each rebuy is for the original buy-in amount, granting the original starting stack. Unlimited Rebuys. The game ends after Level 5 unless all players agree to continue. Payouts are made proportionally to each player’s final chip count relative to the starting stack and buy-in.

T10k Starting Stack

L1 50/100
L2 75/150
L3 100/200
L4 150/300
L5 200/400

Why would the chip leader agree to continue after the 5th round. That seems -EV.

Seems like a five round tournament.

It's a cash game with increasing blinds and a required playing time. If the buy-in was say, $100, then the blinds are:
.50/1
.75/1.50
1/2
1.50/3
2/4

This reminds me a bit of the "Cash of the Titans" event held on PokerGo back in early 2023. Money put into a 'prize pool' and awarded to the biggest winner at the end of each of two days and another payout for biggest cumulative winner.

(The description of how things worked is there, as well as the link to the episodes if you have a subscription)

The "structure" was:

Blinds BBA
L1 $500/$500 $500
L2 $500/$500 $1000
L3 $500/$1000 $1000
L4 $500/$1000 $2000
L5 $1000/$2000 $2000
L6 $1000/$2000 $4000
All levels are 3-hours long

South Point does a survivor chip chop tournament. I've never played it but sounds similar but ends at a later level.

Wow. That actually surprises me that a casino has such a “tournament” format. Thanks for sharing.

What is different, however, are the payout rules. After all, every player gets their buy-in back at the end plus their share of the remainder. Quote:

"At the conclusion of the tournament, all players still in play will be awarded a sum of $100 and a proportional share of the remaining prize pool, calculated as their chip stack percentage versus the total chips in play. So, if you hold 10% of the chips, you will receive 10% of the remaining prize pool. Once registration closes, if one player has accumulated all of the chips in play, they will receive 100% of the prize pool."
This means that players who, for example, are down to only one big blind are paid out disproportionately, and the player with the most chips receives relatively less than what would strictly correspond to their share. Essentially, the payout structure is a kind of hybrid concept combining tournament payout structure with a proportional share similar to a cash game.

I haven’t tried my format yet, but by now I’ve put together a semi-custom tournament set that I’d like to bring into play at some point. I prefer cash games over tournaments, mainly because you can always rebuy. And you’re not suddenly out and left wondering what to do next while the others keep playing poker. Of course, you can host a tournament with unlimited rebuys, but in my opinion, rebuying at very high blind levels doesn’t really make sense later on.

Maybe I’ll try the format with just 30-minute blind levels, so that I can end the tournament about 2.5 hours later and seamlessly switch to a cash game.

i had an idea for a game at meetups. Each player brings 1 rack of chips. They play until winner has all the racks and they get to keep them. Might be good for OFCP or STT maybe.

I’ve played in a lot of these. They just play down until there is 10% left and then chop the prize money. Pretty easy format for TAG players

This answers by the way my question how you would call it. Chip chop

It's a way for them to get a tournament done in ~3 hours.
"I don't care if some of you have chips. You're done. We're done. Here's your money."

This is interesting. My friends only want to play cash games, but it gets so boring betting quarters and dollars, and I'd love to be able to give the game more of a tournament FEEL while letting everyone off the hook of the winner-take-all format. Will have to give this something like this some thought!
