Hi folks. New here. I used to be a regular back in the day on Chiptalk. Left poker/gambling, got married, house, and had kids.

Slowing getting back into it after playing at Casino Niagara in Canada and winning enough to pay for my trip. :)

Anyways, I’m looking to start a good chip set and there are some beautiful designs out there with Paulson-like molds, etc, but why are they all 13.5 grams?

Who’s asking for these heavy chips? They’re unwieldy to hold and shuffle. A case of 1000 will break your back etc.

I was hoping after 15 years away from poker, there would be a lot more affordable 9-10g composite chips.

I'm completely with you here. When I was a newbie, I thought heavier was better. I bought 13.5 g sluggos and thought I was a high roller or something. Turns out, it just hurts your hand after a while to keep moving those heavy ass chips around.

I asked the same question about a year ago here, and a whole bunch of B&G fans came out of the woodwork to tell me that 13g B&G chips are the absolute best. I still don't get it, but everyone has their own preference I guess.

To the moon! Anything clay has gone through the roof. And supply chain and shipping disruptions have caused even the cheap Chinese produced chips to go up in price. For cool inexpensive lighter chips I would go ceramics.

Hi and welcome,

For someone who has zero trade-bait, I don't see many options to get a quality set at an affordable (it's relative) price :
  • Getting a CPC set with a controlled budget (ex : up to L3 spots with one of the 6 less expensive molds)
  • Getting a ceramic set - I'd recommend to go with @BR Pro Poker for plain ceramics or @SUN-FLY Poker Chips for hybrid or debossed ceramic chips
If not in a hurry, you can still try to score a set at the next @TheChipRoom sale.

This is at least what I would do if I was about to look for a nice set of chips in 2022.
And it's of course very subjective.

Kid.

I agree. Anything less than 8.5 grams feel heavy and anything more than 10g feels too heavy.
So, I am super sarcastic, and the term "casino weight" is kinda a joke around here. I really dont care about the weight of any chips. I do love my leaded THC set, which is super heavy, but most of my CPC sets are on the lighter side and I don't even notice.

I lean more on color profiles and spot progression to figured out my feelings on a set.

Welcome to PCF! If you ever need anything, always feel free to reach out.

How are these? I’m in Toronto, and it looks like the dealer I was using before straightflush.ca is no longer around. Also used to buy from 5stardeals. These seem to be the only genuine clay chips available to buy in Canada.

Look for Palms V8 China Clays for my favorite CC set. China Clays can really range in quality, but the V8s always played really well and can be found pretty cheaply.

Times have changed since the heyday at Chiptalk. Prices have skyrocketed in recent years. Cheap option for customs are cards mold ceramics from China.

I believe those are china clay.

While straightflush.ca is no longer around, straightpokersupplies.com is still around and close to you. They are legit.
