Trip to Vegas - Non-poker related suggestions (1 Viewer)

Not having a rental sorta takes my suggestion out of the running, but maybe next time... About 45 mins north of town is an old ghost town called Rhyolite. I think one person still lives there. There are all sorts of cool old ruins - a bank, brothel, hotel. All over the hills are old abandoned silver mines you can explore (at your own risk - rattlesnakes tend to like living in the mines). Take flashlights. We went in one about 150 yards. Super creepy! The walls and roof in places are still held up by old timbers. I guarantee it will be an experience neither of you will ever forget! Cheap too. Only costs you gas and guts.

http://rvn4fun.com hopefully that works. Doing it from my phone. Nice guys and fun. I believe they will pick you up at the hotel as well, we had a car. But it was the surprise highlight of my trip back in May.

Golden Steer is one of those bucket list restaurants, we went last year for our one "expensive" dinner, this year will be Sterling Buffet. I had the surf & turf and could not breathe for the next 12 hours I was so stuffed. Get a taxi there, they can "arrange" a ride back for you. Hopefully will be "Vegas Phil", guy was as close to a Soprano as I have ever seen, definitely connected someway. Guy is "not a taxi" you can give him "whatever you want for his services", he "doesn't have a meter". Guy was funny as hell though, and if we wanted "anything" he was happy to help out.

If memory serves me, there are car rental desks at just about every big property, could get a car for a day if you want to check out Red Rock or something else further away.

If I see you there, we'll get a whiskey smash :)

Places I've been and would easily recommend, because I would go back:

  • Presidential Limo. Never get a cab. Cabs are for suckers. We almost always get a limo
  • Pinball HoF. I'm a kid from the 80s, and this was reliving a time where High Score was more important to me than... well anything.
  • Penn and Teller. Pay the money for good seats.
  • Absinthe. Definitely not for the easily offended. Or the mildly offended. As they say during the intro, "if words like shit or damn, offend you, you came to the wrong fucking show".
  • Treasures. It's a steakhouse. It's a strip club. My lengthy but helpful review is here: http://www.yelp.com/user_details_reviews_self?userid=cMAiTrM0Fxm8vKLQag53jg&review_sort=funny. Be aware it is an old review, so things may have changed.
  • I'll just lump all the food surprises together: Mr Mamas (breakfast, off strip), Secret Pizza (Cosmo), Golden Steer (classic, but a little more classy than I would want to do with my brother), Battista's Hole in the Wall (all you can drink wine - this is nearly on every trip for me now), Ellis Island (because it is still the cheapest steak dinner walking distance from the strip, and also an every trip stop for us now).
Places I have not yet tried, but remain on the list:
  • There is a fantasy car drive that leaves from the north strip. Details are at home, but I can get them tomorrow if you'd like. Basically you get to drive out into the desert, they run a car or 2 ahead to scope for cops, obstacles, or oncoming traffic, and then you drive Ferraris, Lambos, and other supercars and just open it up.
  • Many other restaurants. I'd need to hit up my list at home. I am serious about my Vegas research, and would not want to misadvise...

How in the hell did this slip past the Zombies last trip?

Zombie, are you positive about the driving one? I'm a car nut and have briefly thought about doing a track day in Vegas and drive an exotic, but have never pulled the trigger becaus of the restrictions they put on you (top speeds, traction control, etc.) vs the price. It surprises me that a legitimate business would run anything like what you are describing and be open enough about it that it's widely known and posted about on message boards..... I'm definitely curious.

I have not done the drive yet, but sources say it is true. Obviously the company does not hype the bit about speed violations, and I suspect they really try to keep it on the down-low, but word gets out.

How in the hell did this slip past the Zombies last trip?

It's been on the radar for a while, but everything at the V-Theater needs to be taken with a grain of salt - then immediately followed by Tequlia and then lime. Sine my average Vegas vacation is for just 2 weeks, 2 out of 3 years, The punch list of must-dos and do-agains is pretty big. My last trip was even just set up to be do-agains as we had another couple travelling with us (then they flaked-out last minute).

Even then, a lot of new places made the last trip, including the Mob Museum. I cannot recommend the Mob Museum, but I used to work as a docent at the Edison Institute (Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum for you Detroit area locals). My specialty was the roaring 20's, so most everything here I knew, but the Vegas focus was extremely helpful to expanding my knowledge base. So while I found it fun, I'm not sure everyone else would.

Also, if your wife asks you "how many points for a head shot", don't just walk up to the wall and look. She may be armed...

I should also back-reference my 2015 trip report. It is full of useful Vegas-traveling tidbits, not so full of stories about bad beats or questionable hands, all in a tasteful read.

Except the parts about poop. That's not so tasteful...

Sounds like a blast!

Thanks Zombs!! Love it!

I see a Vegas Guide for Zombies in your future! ;)

Say hi to Liz!

Some of them light up but you have to go for a night tour to see them as everything is outside. It really is cool. They have signs from many of the old Vegas casinos. I have a ton of pictures but I don't want to spoil it for you.
It was the coolest thing I did on my whole trip that year. I must have taken 30 pics. It's at the top of my recommendation list for any Vegas trip. My friend couldn't thank me enough for "discovering" it and insisting we go. I'm sure the day tour is great too, but I just had to see the old neon signs the way they were meant to be seen. A fair amount still light up and it is amaze balls. For a kick, Google Earth it - you'll see the face of the old Treasure Island skull pirate. Little trivia - the skull can't be displayed vertically because of the weight distribution. That's why it's laying flat in the museum and you can only see the face via satellite image.

I reeeeeaaaalllllyyyyy want to go. I also may or may not reeeeeaaaalllllyyyyyy want to partake in some of the newly legal wares my state has to offer about five minutes before arrival at said neon museum.... ;)
