So I pose some questions to this group. Always helpful.

I am running a $100 entry NL Hold'em tourney this Saturday. 12-16 players. 30k starting stack. T25. 4-5hr blind structure based on the tournament calculator.

A couple questions.

1) Bounty? I'm slightly tempted to have a $20 bounty on top of the entry. Any opinions? I have never had a bounty for any tourney I've ever had, so this would be new.

My plan is to not have a re-buy option, since a lot of the players will be interested in playing cash if they get knocked out.

Tourney will be starting at 7pm sharp. Dinner at 6pm...

2) Does anyone have any opinions on 4hr vs. 5hr tournament? I'm concerned the tournament running past midnight, and a few of the players work in the morning.

3) Payouts? 3rd position gets $120-150 or do I have 4th position get their money back and the rest from there?

Thanks. Really excited for this. I haven't had more than a single table tournament in over a year.

1. IMO, I really dislike bounty tournaments. I just like the nature of tournaments of trying to navigate the minefield to the end........bounties just take away from the prize pool (I know you said on top of the entry, but I would then just prefer a $120 tournament with no bounties). I like the way you have it.........a pure freezeout. I offer an hour re-buy period since our group does not play cash and we only play a few times a year so to just get someone back in the game if they get coolered early.

2. Sounds like this is more of a bigger event than your normal STT so I would opt for the 5 hours.

3. 50/30/20% for 1, 2, 3 but I'm not well versed in payouts for anything larger than an STT.

I don’t think there are any right or wrong answers to any of these questions, just opinions and preferences.
My opinion is that bounties and rebuys both stink.
My opinion is also when it comes to tournaments, the longer the better. I’d support the extra hour. If the thing is actually going to end at midnight, I don’t feel like that’s debilitatingly late for morning workers.
And I think paying four in a field of that size is fine. Three is fine too, but I’d vote for four.

This right here.

Home games are meant to be a fun, social experience as well as provide competition through the game itself.

I’d opt for the opportunity for more players to earn some cash throughout. So, upvote for bounties, and upvote for paying out 4 spots.

I do a 50/30/20 split with bounties.

I like to spread the cash around as much as possible.

When it gets to four or five left, let them figure it out I'd they want to chop the pot.

No issues paying 4 players in a 15 or 16 player field. Money back for 4th, 2x for 3rd, 4x for 2nd, the rest for the winner.

A T25 base 30k stack with 2 tables will be tough to get done in just 5 hours without going really turbo on it. Assuming 25/50 is the first blind level then you’re starting with 600 bb. Even with 15 minute blinds and no rebuys 5 hours isn’t enough without an aggressive structure and if you do that you might as well not even have the T25s in play.

I’d suggest just going T100 base, start at 100/100. It’ll let you have a slower, less jumpy structure. 15 minute blinds: 100/100, 100/200, 200/300, 200/400, 300/600, 400/800, 600/1200, 800/1600. 2 hour mark, color up your 100s and take 15. 1000/2000, 1500/2500, 1500/3000, 2000/4000, 2500/5000, 3000/6000, 4000/8000, 4 hour mark, color up 500s. 5000/10000, 6000/12000, 8000/16000, 10000/20000.

I run a very similar tournament to what you’ve proposed for my annual Turkey shootout.

I like the bounty because it’s spreads around the “feel good” and flattens payouts a bit. Players like to be able to say they won a bounty. With 12 to 16 I’d only pay top 3 though. Giving 4th money back is fine though. Really your preference.

I also think freezeout are the best for your type of event. But I’m a purest with tournaments and prefer cash anyway. I try not to turn tournaments into cash games.

If your group plays tight, go 4 hour. If they play crazy, go 5 hour. Either way only a few will be affected so it’s your preference again. The winners won’t care but the bubble might.

I'm really liking this. I just typed in the poker soup calculator and started with T100 instead of T25, Blind structures do a much better job instead of the rapid jump with the T25

I quite like bounties in tournaments. I think it adds a fun element that helps encourage lighter calls and more action in the mid to late game. I think it's better in medium to larger tournaments as with 9 people and under I don't know if it works quite as well.

Depends on the crowd as well. But I just play for fun and enjoy elements that mix it up. Show Me chips are fun as well.

I run a social game. Bounties gives more people a since of winning so hopefully they will be more likely to come back. These guys don't expect to win but they get a small consolation.

The only people that don't like bounties are the guys that think they are best players and it's giving away "their money" to the losers.

Agreeing with those that like bounties. Even if its only a dollar, my players get a huge kick out of taking someone out and getting their chip. Not about the money, it makes for a fun experience.
