I've heard that your bankroll for cash games should be somewhere around 20 buy ins. Does that number apply to tournaments as well?

I'm trying to manage my tournament bankroll and was wondering what you guys think is a good number for how many tourney buy ins I should have. Considering how much harder it is to be in the money in a tournament vs cash games, I would assume that number would be higher for tournaments.

For example, a local casino has weekly $70 - $130 tournaments on weekends. I usually find myself playing in these tournaments about every other week to every week. How much should my bankroll be at these stakes? Assume only 1 buy in per tourney for the vast majority.

Ideally you want to know your ROI, average field size and Cash % to develop an accurate tournament bankroll.

One often touted rule of thumb due to increased variance of tournaments over cash games is 100 x Average Buy In, but obviously that makes it unrealistc/difficult to for example play the WSOP ME ($1m bankroll req) - so apply some common sense.

A chart I just consulted suggests that for a 95% chance of not going broke while playing 90 person tournaments with a 15% ROI (this is pretty good but "achievable" for the average tourney grinder) you want 134 buyins.

Said chart would also indicate that the "safe" BR requirement for the WSOP main event would be $4.5m at 15% ROI.

This really depends on whether you are playing for a living or not. If you aren't a pro then really bankroll doesn't matter since poker isn't your main source of income.

In general, tournament bankrolls will be higher than cash games since you are most often going to miss the money in a tournament.
