Things Kids Today Will Never Understand (2 Viewers)

adult children
Yeah and that’s why I understand the pain. My daughters are 20 and 23 and they’re convinced they’ll never own anything unless their parents die. And they may not be wrong. The money my daughter pays to rent in Boston is more than twice what I was paying 30 years ago. Prices for houses are worse.

It’s funny to me that people say to move to a cheaper state. We’re all different, but that just doesn’t compute to me. My parents are here, my kids are here, my friends are here, my work is here, why the hell would I ever move away, when the stuff that’s important to me is all right here? Good pizza here too.
We’re all different for sure.

Once you accept it the pain should go away. It’s only there because the older generations have Told them that is the way. The younger gen constantly tell us it’s different now, so they need to find their own way. Our maps don’t work for them anymore.

Nobody’s ever fully grown up until their parents are gone.

Found a bunch of "relics" when me and my brother cleaned out my mom's place after she passed a few years ago...

Calculator jokes

187 Detroiters decided to have a party
They bought 588 cases of beer
And 69 cases of whiskey
They had the party for 2 (x2) days

Where did they have it?

I remember feeling the same way around that age but I decided I was going to work as much overtime as I could and scraped together just enough for a down payment that got me into my first home at 23.

Lots of 12-14 hour days but had the weekends off and my own place. Funny thing, 30 years later not much has changed work wise but doing much better financially.

I think if there’s a word I never hear much with kids these days, that word would be sacrifice. Don’t hear it from too many so called adults much either.
Most of the time in life we have to give something up (mainly our time) to have something better.
Instant gratification and what have you done for me lately attitudes are ambition killers and it seems to run rampant in thought in today’s society.

Anyone young or old can make their dreams and ambitions reality when they just decide they’re going to make it happen.

Shit I'll pot..... I'm so old most of the numbers in my memory bank started with letters: MO66-138 (Mohawk-66) FR40-333 (Franklin-37), etc...

Thats a very Michigan specific joke. I had to look it up.

lmao boomers thinking 12 hours with weekends off to purchase a home is rough.

students with a generic mix of cp/ap classes and just 1 extracurricular would like a word.

sadly tuna I'm in a profession where overtime is normal but we're not paid for it (salary). 60-70 hours on crunch weeks; half of the year, I'm on-call and being paged at 3 am on a Saturday as I'm drunk as hell, having to fix some bullshit to save the CEO a couple billion bucks.

if you have job openings, I'll hit you up once I'm tired of my current gig

That post wasn’t meant to be salty or directed at you personally Baldwin, just more random thought on the topic. ;) Don’t take it personal, I have nothing personal toward anyone here.

Just a thought….
Everyone’s career path is different, not sure what’s out here at the moment but there are lots of good paying jobs and affordable new housing in the Texas panhandle.
Much more closely aligned to that 2-1 ratio you mentioned in an earlier post.

I’m sure many others as well. Maybe worth just taking a look.

If you decide you want to check it out sometime, got a spare room for ya.
Seriously though, it is tough and sometimes scary navigating life at any age. Even when you think you’ve got it down, life tends more times than not to try and mess up our plans.

Seems to be the way.

Every single apartment, home or acreage I ever considered buying would have been a good investment, in retrospect.

I’m on my third home now. I did well on the sales of the prior two, can’t complain.

If I knew then what I know now, I guess it would have been smart to mortgage myself to the hilt and have bought as much as possible.

But I was just looking for a home to call my own and enjoy, not trying to become a landlord / property manager / builder.

And I’m glad I didn’t spend my adult life fielding calls from tenants about broken washing machines and conked-out furnaces.

Give me some notice and I’m sure I could get a good little game set up for your arrival.
@ekricket and @travelgirl are almost local to here and @JeepologyOffroad is just over an hour from me. I think @pacmartine is back in the area or soon to be as well. :cool

any of my success has repeatedly come from luck and right time right place, not hard work and gumption, so I might not have a place to talk.
I think this is the case for many people. Went to a meetup in 2020 and met someone there from where I live now that was in the same line of work as myself.

Right place right time…….for sure.

As far as luck goes, sure some folks win the lottery at times but I’m more of a believer in we make our own luck through our choices in life.

Made the decision to go to that meetup in 2020. ;)

The fun of spending an afternoon playing outside. I remember the summer before my freshman year running into Bill McCoubrey as he was heading to the courts with a basketball under his arm. I joined him for a little one on one. We were in the middle of our second game when two neighborhood athletes from our class walked up asking us if we wanted to play two on two.

Billy and I were just recreational players who enjoyed the game. Neither one of were known for our talents on the court. I was hoping to keep the game close and not let Billy down by being the weak link on our team. We agreed to play to twenty by ones with shots outside the three line counting as two. Airballs did not need to be cleared. You had to win by two, or the game would continue.

From the start, I found myself playing well above my game. Billy too, found his zone early. The other two players who probably thought they would mop us up picked up their intensity. The only thing Billy and I had going for us is that we were both a little faster on speed. The game was a thriller, going back and forth with neither side being able to break ahead by more than one.

We were tied up 18 to 18 and had possession. Remarkably, the game was within reach.

Billy was a big Lakers fan. He took the ball out beyond the three point line. I found myself open and had my hands up for the pass. To my horror, Billy launched the ball single handed over the side of his head on a a full run two feet outside the top of the key -- hollering out "Kareem Abdul Jabar!!" I was out of position and had no chance of getting the rebound.

I looked on him in that moment as if he had dropped a priceless vase. I turned, hoping the basketball would take a wild bounce off the backboard or rim., only to witness the bottom of the net pop as it went in.

The other two players stared at the backboard and hoop in disbelief. The miracle shot completely deflated them. Billy was walking on air, laughing.

In spectacular fashion, victory was ours. Because of the way they lost, neither one had an interest in a rematch. It was such a great feeling.

The two players we beat that summer went on to play in the staring five for our high school's varsity basketball team.
