Yeah the characters looked off. I'd be willing to bet there was no Asian involved in the design of this set.

Most things are Chinese but the lucky cat is Japanese (I did see Cratty acknowledged this). But then again this is supposed to be "Mexicali Chinatown" and that is just

I drank quite a bit of Baijiu if that counts for anything.

But yes, I designed for a fictional casino in Mexicali Chinatown, where I assumed actual Asian guidance might actually lead the design down a path that wouldn't make sense for the location, ha. I wanted the design to read chinese restaurant and tourism. Would have been a very different approach if located in China.

And to the criticism about meaning, let's not pretend language is a monolith.
When I was studying Spanish, I learned that saying "I love tacos" could get me radically different reactions in Bilbao or Buenos Aires. Same simple, uncontroversial word with little ambiguity in any given Spanish dictionary, but different cultures using it.

Meanwhile, a Chinese character can mean like six different things just based on the speaker's tone.

The ambiguity makes me like these more. I don't want perfect art - something "uncanny valley" about that.

More pics should be coming. Lots of sets delivering tomorrow and Monday!

Oh.. fun fact that no one else knew. There is a casino in Mexicali Chinatown named 'Casino Chinesca'. You can see it on the map below. Recognize any other names? :ROFLMAO: :wow:

I can try to get some pics as well. My niece works in Mexicali

FYI - Closing orders this weekend for the plastic Lucky’s cut cards.

Debuted this set last night for some birthday poker and it quickly became a fan favorite! We started the night with some steak and wine, finished it with some poker and a lot more wine lol.
