Annex
Back in 2019, I introduced the Mill Town cash set. In 2021, the Mill Town tournament set on the cards mold came into existence (thanks @SeanGecko). That set would go on to become the workhorse of the Papermaker Poker League.
Six seasons later, that tournament set is still going strong.
But over the years, as the league evolved, the idea for a companion tournament set began to take shape. Not a replacement, but an addition. Something that could complement the original set while bringing its own identity to the table.
That’s where The Annex gets its name.
An annex is an extension of something that already exists, and this set wears that meaning in several ways. First, it is a natural addition to the broader Mill Town family of chips. Second, it joins the original Mill Town tournament set as part of the Papermaker Poker League’s lineup for Season 7. And finally, the name reflects the story of the league itself. What started as a one-table game quickly added a second table, and then expanded to the addition of a third table in short order. Furthermore, our games have been hosted in a variety of locations over the years. 90% of League games during the first 5 seasons were hosted mostly at the same location. Season 6 found a new home. Growth, expansion, and additions have always been part of the league’s story.
Like Mill Town, The Annex includes a subtle nod to the Pacific Northwest. Evergreen trees and mountain imagery are incorporated into the design as a quiet homage to the region we live, work, and play in. The goal wasn’t to create a heavily themed chip, but rather to establish a sense of place that ties the set to its roots.
The Annex was produced on the web mold through one of @justincarothers group buys. It also fills a different role than the original Mill Town tournament set.
While the Mill Town set remains a T25 tournament set and will continue to see action, The Annex is built around a T100 structure, giving the league additional flexibility for different formats and events. Beginning with Season 7, both sets will share tournament duties.
In many ways, that’s exactly what this project was intended to be: an addition. An expansion of an existing family of chips, an expansion of the league’s tournament offerings, and another chapter in a game that has continued to grow far beyond what I imagined when it first began.
