THC vs. RHC (2 Viewers)

I prefer mint chips... They become slightly rounded. Slightly rounded chips become... bicycle tires.

You have to settle for what you can get.

Luckily, there are still enough LV Strip casinos that use THC $1s with nice colours that there will be plenty of opportunity to harvest for a mixed set or for future overlabel/murder.

If it's only between the two choices, I'm firmly in the THC camp. The visual separation of the the top hats and canes by two rings makes the chips look very balanced, even if it means you have to settle for a smaller recess/inlay diameter.

I would be curious to see how a RHC with the same amount of play would compare with the THC Cal-Neva that @allforcharity sold recently.

Would be hard to compare. The Club Cal-Nevas were used for roulette, which show a distinctly different wear pattern when compared to THCs used for poker, i.e. way less flea bites, but lots of hot stamp wear, equal amount of edge wear. Nowadays most roulette chips are plastic. Did TCR recently sell a bunch of used RHC roulettes? If so, that would be your best direct comparator.

Sheraton roulettes...and they are awsome (leaded & textured)
I was lucky to score the mint chips, the used ones varied in condition but no bicycle tires imho (and I bet those saw a LOT of use)

I find the THC MUCH more visually appealing.

I also think Paulson makes RHC chips because they damage more easily and require replacement more frequently.....400,000 chip orders mean $$$$$$

RHC are ugly to me. I'd rather have ceramics or BJ.

RHC chips are easier and cheaper to produce and provide a larger canvas for the casino's image/message, while still maintaining the security features offered by clay chips. Those are the reasons they are offered to casinos.

Current general thinking...

Minty THC > Minty House Mold > Minty RHC > SU THC > SU House Mold > SU RHC > Used THC > Used House Mold > New China Clay or Quality Ceramic > Used RHC > Used China Clay > Worn THC > Worn House Mold > Worn RHC

SU = slightly used, still able to stand on edge

Minty THC > Minty House Mold > Minty RHC > SU THC > SU House Mold > SU RHC > Used THC > Used House Mold > New China Clay or Quality Ceramic > Used RHC > Used China Clay > Worn THC > Worn House Mold > Worn RHC

I would insert 43mm hybrids between minty house molds and minty RHC chips.

It goes to show how subjective chipping is (and I am happy for it, otherwise we'd all be going for the same chips).

I have yet to add a THC set, but I have had a lot of exposure in other local games I play, and I actually prefer RHC to THC visually (I find the THC mold too busy). I would actually put IHC at the top of the list for me.

I also do not like hybrids at all, so they would be at the bottom of my list.

Semi-automated process, plus glossy inlay laminates (allowing security features underneath).

And again, no mention at all about any high end plastics. It's as if they don't exist in the general consciousness.

Yes. I can't speak for the general consensus, but my opinion - that "high end plastics" is an oxymoron - seems to be shared by others. But you're always going to have big problems when you try to put out a generalized ranking. Where are TRK's and CPC's 15 different molds? How can you even make house mold a category when they're all different by definition?

I sort of lumped them in the middle with Quality Ceramic, but I do realized there is a difference between SunFly and some others. I'd suspect that for most people, it's an evolving scale, so things could morph.

High end plastics is certainly not an oxymoron. I think most people on this site have not truly handled any high end plastics, and seem to go with some sort of "groupthink" consensus that since dice chips are plastic, all plastic chips have the same quality as dice.

It is my PCF mission to change the broad opinion about this.

Well, you didn't really lump them in the middle, because you didn't mention them at all. A more inexperienced chipper would look at your list, not see them, and assume that they are not even worth considering. Which is a real shame.

I sold my mint Paulsons for a set of Matsui ..... no regrets

What? YOU'RE CRAZY! Just kidding ;)

My Bud Jones S2 Big Easy Casino chips can easily stand beside my Paulson THC CDI98s, my Paulson THC Grouse Mountains, and ahead of my custom OWPS Ceramics in terms of quality, playability, and enjoyment.

High-end plastics (Abbiati, Matsui, Bud Jones, B&G) are definitely a step up from the mass-produced plastic stuff typically produced in China.

High-end plastic chips are made with better raw materials using more closely controlled processes, are made to much more exacting dimensional tolerances, and are finished after manufacturing (typically machined to exact size and polished).

All of those things make them much nicer than run-of-the-mill plastic chips, and it also makes them many, many times more expensive.

But at the end of the day, they are still plastic chips, often with metal slugs, and sharing many of the traits and characteristics -- both negative and positive -- that are inherent to the material itself.

If all chips made were at the exact same price point, I'd rank the very best that each chip medium has to offer as clay > ceramic > plastic. And when you factor in actual costs, high-end plastics are an even worse value in the eyes of most people.

I prefer the feel of THC's that are used on the Coasts. Preferably the East Coast. It has to do with the moisture in the air. It just gives the chips a little extra feel that I really enjoy. Humidity from Lakes is slightly less desirable from sea air because the lack of salt content. However the best feel of all THC's is from casino's located along rivers. This has to do with the higher levels of magnesium and potassium in river water giving the chips a sweet buttery feel.

All RHC's are crap though. They feel like shit.

All Bud Jones/Matsui type chips don't even belong in the conversation. Also (as everyone knows) even the most beat to shit TRK chip is so much better than anything else.

Two questions.

1) What have you been smoking?

2) Can I have some?
