Well, I messaged the guy and secured to pick it up tomorrow morning. Ten minutes later, he contacted me back and informed me that the chips were not actually his sons... but his son’s friend. He said he would contact me if the chips are available for sale. So either I am the buyer... or he removed the listing... or someone else offered him more... remains to be seen.

The seller just confirmed that the "son's friend" wanted the chips back. So it goes.

It is entirely plausible that this is a true story and he simply told others that the chips are "sold" as opposed to "no longer for sale."
