I host a monthly 10 player home game tournament and for the past 3 years or so we have been doing T5K starting stack, but after reading many threads here and looking at typical structures I would like to try T10K to allow for some more deep stack play early. As you can see from the blind structure below, I have it ramp up towards the 2:30 mark as that's typically when I want the game to end. This is a rebuy tournament and we typically get anywhere from 5-10 rebuys. I also like to do an on time bonus of 1k chips and wanted to get the general communities thought on that.

I was planning on testing this for the first time this month but wanted to see if you guys had any advice beforehand. Thanks

If you play with rebuys and want to stay at +/- 2:30 hours of play, keep 5000 starting stacks.

I see big jumps in your structure.
Ex : 25-50 to 50-100 or 250-500 to 400-800...

I'd go with this structure :
25-50
25-75
50-100
75-150
100-200
150-300
## color-up 25
200-400
300-600
400-800
600-1200
800-1600
## color-up 100
1000-2000
1500-3000
## color-up 500
2000-4000
3000-6000
4000-8000
6000-12000
8000-16000
...

You have to consider that the game ends +/- at the level where the big blind = total amount of chips in play (incl. starting stacks, bonuses, rebuys, ...) x 0.05.

Ex. with 5000 starting stacks, if 8 players get their on time arrival bonus (500 chips, 10% of the starting stack is what I do) and 5 players took a rebuy, total amount of chips in play is 50000 + 4000 + 25000 = 79000. --> end level will be probably 2000-4000.

This means you'll play 11-12 levels. From there you can decide to adjust your blinds levels to 13' to get the desired play time.

Having a smooth blind progression is key for a nice tournament experience.

Also, in my rebuy structures, rebuys are allowed until starting stack / 20 >= SB + BB. So in the above structure, level 100-200 is the last one where rebuys are allowed. I also let players "surrender" their stack to take a rebuy in my rebuy structures.

Thanks for all the helpful info! I would like to correct my initial post and say that the 2:30 - 3hr mark is where I like the game to end. 2:30 is just when I started ramping up the blinds to 10 min levels to accomplish this.

What would you recommend if I were to do 20 min. levels? I typically try to avoid all 10 min. levels because some players are quite casual and aren't cognizant of the blind levels (even though I have them on a TV screen) so it helps having them progress a little slower.

Also, if it is relevant information, I allow unlimited rebuys until players are in the money (final 3), which sometimes means players are rebuying for <5 bb.

Set your rebuy cutoff to a specific level, say level 6 (second break). I would also check with your players to see if a 3-4 hour experience would be acceptable to them. It will give you more room to spread out your blind structure.

So start with a fair structure like Kid_Eastwood posted, then build the game around it using the .05 estimate. If it calculates out to rounds shorter than you would like, reduce the starting stacks or limit the buy-ins to accommodate.

I would keep starting stack no more than 100BB if you want to stay under 3 hours. Otherwise, thr blinds gets so high compared to total chips, by the time you get to the end you are basically having to go all in every hand or two and no poker is actually played.

I do 10k with 1k on time and 500 exact change.

20 min levels with one rebuy allowed through round 4.

25/50
50/100
100/200
150/300
Break color 25s
200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1k
Break color 100s 500s
1k/2k
2k/4k
3k/6k
4k/8k
Break color 1ks.
So on...

Tournament is over in approximately 3 hrs and we play two a night.
