6-8 players, 4 hours up to 4:30, plus breaks.
My initial consideration is a T400 tourney (=200BB), with one rebuy of 400 and one add-on of 200 (max 1000 per player).
Chip values of 1, 2, 5, 25 (or20?), 50, 100 (I know it can be done with fewer chip values).

How can it be done best (fair and smooth) in terms of blinds, level duration and rebuy / add-on period?
Having taken @BGinGA's point in another similar thread, I don't want to turn it into a lottery at the later stages, but I do wish to offer my friends some relatively-easy-to-earn time of entertainment up to the mid stages.

Below is a 40% average blind increase structure that can be tailored to meet your specific needs. I recommend using only T1, T5, T25, and T100 chips (10/8/10/1 starting stacks), and dropping the T2 and T50 chips. Using too many denominations only slows down play, makes constructing bets more difficult, and generally degrades the tournament experience. Use

With 6 players, 19-minute levels (and no purchased re-buys), it will run about 4:25 (plus breaks). Add or subtract 15 minutes total playing time for each 1-minute increment change to the blind level times.

With 8 players, 15-minute levels, and a full monte of 8 re-buys and 8 add-ons, it will run about 4:25 (plus breaks). Again, add or subtract 15 minutes total playing time for each 1-minute increment change to the blind level times.

If you are wanting to standardize regardless of number of players (within your range) and an average number of re-buys, I'd run it with 17-minute blinds and expect it to finish in under 4;30 (plus breaks).

**1 - typical max duration for 6 players with no re-buys and 50% add-ons
**2 - typical max duration for 8 players with 100% re-buys and add-ons

I would end re-buys after L6 (when T400 is still worth 25bb during L7), and offer the add-on during the color-up break after L8 (T200 will worth about 7-8bb at that point).

Use T25 chips to color-up the T1 and T5 chips, and leave the T25s on the table for the duration of the event (you can replace 40s or so with 10x T100 when they will be needed around L15).
